4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

Something is stirring. People around the world are deciding that the wellbeing of their local community and its economy lies with them. They're people like you. They're rolling up their sleeves, getting together with friends and neighbours and doing something about it. Whether they start small or big, they find that just doing stuff can transform their neighbourhoods and their lives. This book is packed with inspiring real-life examples, and the voices of people who have created innovative local businesses and invested in all manner of new enterprises. This is the seed of a new economy - the answer to our desperate search for a new way forward. At its heart is people deciding that change starts with them. Communities worldwide are already modelling a more local economy rooted in place, in wellbeing, in entrepreneurship and in creativity. And it works. Reviving the place you live in starts with a small group of people making the decision to do something. One of that group could be you.

Review

“Rob Hopkins reminds us how actions speak louder than words, and he does it with practical examples and the passion of someone who has successfully practiced what he writes about.” ―Tony Juniper, author and campaigner

“There's no one on earth who's just done more stuff--and inspired more doing--than Rob Hopkins. This book shows how you can Do Stuff Too!” ―
Bill McKibben, author, environmentalist, and co-founder of 350.org

“Rob Hopkins has done more to change the way that we live in the past 10 years than any one else in Britain. Because he has given people the tools to create change for themselves. It is beautifully simple and incredibly powerful.” ―
Monty Don, gardener, writer and broadcaster

“There's a buzz around this book, and its message, that give great grounds for optimism on topics that are often rather doom-laden. Its true power lies in the fact that its many smart ideas are already underway.” ―
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, writer, broadcaster and campaigner

“Rob Hopkins is a master at doing stuff. He makes the necessary look desirable and possible. Hopkins has understood that paths are made by walking and that what matters is taking steps. Dealing with global challenges will need important rules set at high levels, but we will only survive and thrive if we become enchanted by positive change locally, where we experience the world. This book is that spell to help rapid transition happen.” ―
Andrew Simms, nef Fellow and author of Cancel the Apocalypse

“I see [Transition] as a wonderful combination of civic local engagement and a worldwide network. In many towns throughout the world people get together, finding community, enthusiastic about the idea of together envisioning a future model for their town that will make it worth living in.” ―
Horst Köhler, former German president and former president of the IMF

“Rob Hopkins' book is a truly unique piece of work that anyone who cares about our future in this densely populated and threatened world should read. It offers original thought and clear analysis. It also combines realism and hope.” ―
Jonathan Dimbleby, writer and broadcaster

If you want to know how to make a difference where you live, this is the book for you. Rob Hopkins lays the framework for why we need to work for a changed world and then gives excellent examples of what people are doing all over the world. If you don't know about the Transition Movement, this will inspire you to explore further.

OK - has some good information, but lacks a strong theme. The pieces could be tied together better with a concept or goal to head for.with each piece doing its part to facilitate a small part of the change. As it is, it is a bit of a miss-mash of bits and pieces without an overall strong thread to tie the pieces together. I was hoping for more of an overall concept that might bring the direction for the future into better focus. I know that is a BIG order and nobody seems to have much of a handle on what that concept could or should be, however we need a dialog to begin to coalesce a common purpose behind the individual projects underway. Locally, every area has its own differences that need to be taken into account and therefore any one local answer won't work, but a broader guide needs to evolve so that the local actions however different can support an overall direction. Rob Hopkins is in a position to have a significant impact on what this overall direction can or should be. Good luck to all who are searching, and may the whole come into focus soon.

Inspiring and hopeful book - gives a great sense of how we can do a bit more than use low-energy light-bulbs and have a big impact. Great stories, good ideas, empowering!

Arrived on time in excellent condition. Inspiring read with lots of ideas and projects to get your community interacting, sharing skills and collectively improving the resilience, enterprise and wellbeing of your local area. Please join in this grass roots movement and empower yourself and your community to counteract the challenges society faces. Government and big business are dumping huge debt onto future generations, ignoring the consequences and failing to change direction to build a resilient, sustainable economy. Transformation can start with us if we recognise the success of Transition communities and projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little book to change the world
Reviewed in Canada on July 31, 2013
This little book sails right past the doom and gloom rants about the undoubted mess humans are making of the globe and each others' lives to some very positive advice. In his latest overview of the world-wide movement for change he appears to have started almost accidentally less than ten years ago, Rob Hopkins takes us through the need to stop avoiding the twin impending catastrophes of peak oil and climate change and out the other side to ways of bringing communities of all stripes together to start practicing resiliency.
Having spent forty years in the peace, environment and women's movements, I, too, had come to the conclusion that action is imperative but big government is incapable of leadership and individual action is not enough. The local scene is where we live and know each other. And the energies of community action are just what the transition movement have captured.
This book is a treasure. I recently passed on my original copy of Limits to Growth to a young activist and I expect to do the same with the Power of Just Doing Stuff some day.
