Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—This picture book shows young children that even when goodbyes bring sadness and unfamiliar emotions, those feelings will ease with the help of time, remembrance, and support. The Goodbye Book addresses the range of emotions someone might feel after a loss, including anger, sadness, lack of joy, and denial, as well as the desire to stop eating or sleeping. Parr explains that even when a person starts to feel better, there could be moments of grief or confusion, but at the end of the day, another person will always be available to provide love and comfort. The colorful illustrations, in an naive, childlike style and outlined in black, feature a goldfish that experiences the emotions discussed throughout the book. Young readers can infer what the goldfish is feeling by looking at the picture, and the imaginative representation gives the book a soothing tone. The Goodbye Book never specifies what the exact scenario is, making it an appropriate choice whether a child is dealing with death or another difficult situation. VERDICT An honest but gentle look at the grief that comes with saying goodbye. An essential purchase for all early childhood collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Review

Eliot Schrefer, Special for USA TODAY November 29, 2015The Goodbye Book
Written and illustrated by Todd Parr
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 32 pp., ages 3-6
***½ out of four starsTodd Parr, author of
It's Okay to Be Different, has carved out a niche for himself as "the feelings man" of picture books, and it's not hard to see why. In glossy, color-saturated pages, we're introduced to a small fish who's lost its companion. As the fish goes through many reactions to the loss, the text is directed straight at the reader, giving permission for all sorts of feelings: "You might be very sad. / You might be very mad." The art is simple and naïve, as though Parr loaded up Paint on his computer and started clicking away. With its accessible style and kindhearted text, The Goodbye Book will serve kids as a sympathetic friend during trying times.

Kansas CITY Star: Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein...Well I've found another to add to the list: Todd Parr.

This was one of several books I purchased as the parent of a 2.5 year old when our family pet passed away unexpectedly. I read them all, but this was the only one I felt comfortable reading with him and seemed to be appropriate to his level of comprehension.

To be fair, it’s general enough that it could apply to a friend moving away as well, which in our case felt helpful. I also enjoyed reading it as the parent.

This book is very simple. It demonstrates grief in raw, short phrases, which makes it easier for kids to understand. This is hands down a book that I would recommend for a child experiencing loss. Can apply to an unexpected loss as well a loss that has been anticipate for some time. Because the short phrases allow a lot of “space” in the reading, it naturally allows listeners to ask questions and have discussion as you go along.

Many grief books for kids are a bit too complex for toddlers. Some of them are also religious, which doesn’t suit our beliefs. Or they are too specific. Unfortunately, my husband died suddenly when my daughter was 20 months old. I started reading this with her when she was a bit past 2 yrs old, and it really helps her understand and she really likes it. The fish could be anyone a child loses, so it’s really good for all sorts of deaths in the family. A nice conversation starter.

During a period of intense grief for my family I made the most depressing order on Amazon and purchased 9 recommended books. This one came out as the best- by far. Todd Parr's simple sentences are accessible to everyone, young children, Teens, and even adults. We appreciated this book so much, it is our go-to gift when a friend is experiencing loss/grief.
There is nothing faith based and no promise of Heaven; rather it makes space for a whole range of feelings that people experience after a loss and actionable ways of feeling your feelings (like talking to others and remembering the good times together).
This is the type of book you don't want to purchase... but one you should have. (also, if you are reading this review to get the book, I am sorry for your loss)

My neighbor passed away a little over a week ago. She was a grandma and had custody of her 3 year old grandson. It was a shock to all of us. My daughter is a child psychologist. She recommended this book to help his Grandfather explain whrre his Grandma went. I took this and one other my daughter recommended and gave it to his only caretaker and grandfather. He cried when I gave them to him. He was lost, his wife of many years, he didn't know how to answer all of his grandson's questions. That little boy we have hanied and he is very smart. He asked my husband if he was mad at him because we didn't see him over the weekend
This book was so valued by grandpa. I felt so sad and helpless over my neighbor and friends unexpected death. By helping them out I could feel less helpless and that I had more than a "sorry for you loss" to give.

Purchased this as a gift for a military child whose mother died unexpectedly. I like that this book is not specific to death, so it could apply when he moves and has to make new friends but for now I'm hoping it helps deal with loss and grief. The book itself is sweet and appropriate for all ages. Some people mentioned that it tells you to "be brave" and encourages kind of unhealthy coping but I disagree. I think it strikes the balance between encouraging and saying "how you feel is okay."

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps young children understand grief and loss

A perfect book to help young children process loss. The book is very open ended and can be used as a resource when a loved one or even a pet dies, moves away or is gone for other reasons. Fits in with any faith or belief syste. Perfect for my preschooler. My school ager thought it was too "babyish" for him, but when he was experiencing things the book discussed, reminding him the book said it could happen, that what he was feeling was normal and ok brought him a lot of comfort. A sound purchase for any family experiencing or anticipating loss, or any service provider that supports children through this stage

This is such a lovely book. Purchased for our son after our dog passed away. It’s very simply written, with only one sentence on each page, but the bright colours and basic wording helped him to understand his emotions and to discuss his feelings. Out of several books purchased, this one is the one he gravitates towards and the one which seems to have helped him the most.

My childs school ordered this book special for my 4 year old to help with the passing of a grandmother. He loves the book so much i bought him his own copy. It has been very helpful in explaining loss in such a sweet and simple way. My 8 year old will even sit with us when we read it. The book does not specify a certain person friend or family member so it can be about anyone you need it to be.
