This worked great for my purposes and the smaller sized cherries. I controlled the feeding of cherries by releasing one at a time from a handful. Got pretty quick at it. One after another being pitted jumped into the bowl like paratroopers. At times had to pull up on the plunger to dislodge the cherry from the blade. The area where the cherry sits waiting for execution may gradually fill up with bits of cherry. You'll want to clean that out occasionally. Otherwise, cherry may not stop to be pitted but jump right into your pitted cherries. Which is why you'll want to empty that capture bowl often. You do not want to have to look through a bowl full of pitted cherries for one that isn't. You can thank me later. Machine is easy to use, easy to clean up. I still don”t look forward to pitting but this machine made the task at hand much quicker and easier. Get them cherries before the birds do!
The pitting mechanism works pretty great. I’d say there was only 1 stone found for ~30 pitting attempts— with natural variance in cherry-size, it would be unreasonable to expect 100% success. I halve cherries after pitting, and the occasional stones found were easy to see and remove.
Blades are sharp on the plunger, so minimal bruising of cherry flesh.
Everything comes apart and is easy to clean. You will need a small pipe-cleaner for one part.
Overall, I’m very happy with this and the time/effort it saves.
I was considering getting one of those handheld pitters that does one at a time, but decided to upgrade a little and get one that could do a bunch at once so I could de-pit quickly and enjoy them with my toddler. I also like doing random baking stuff, so at some point I'm sure I'll need to pit a giant amount for something like jelly, pie, or brewing.
Works great for the most part. My only complaint is that clip that holds the plunger to the top. It is garbage and doesn't really work well. It has these very shallow slots and don't engage with the slider so as you are plunging, it will shift and the the plunger will pull out of the top and let a bunch of cherries fall into the pit bin and throw off your rhythm completely. You then have to fish the cherries out of the very soaked pit bin. It is so bad, if I come up with something else to hold it on I will update the post. Hoping I can make a shim or something to keep it in place.
Besides that it works great. My toddler loves helping to push the plunger down. Very little waste in the pit bin which I think is due to the gasket they have with the cross in it rather than a circular hole. I was thinking there would be more blowout and wasted cherry flesh, but it seems to work pretty good on the cherries we get at our store. There is more mess than I would have thought so make sure you use it in an area that wipes up pretty easily. Mostly just some drips and mild spraying. My toddler had some splatters on her face and there was some dripping (the last batch of cherries we got were very juicy). Clean-up is so simple, everything comes apart pretty easily so you can really rinse it all out well. No staining from dark red cherries. If it wasn't for that latch problem, this would be an easy 5 star product.
Just in case anyone was looking for how long it takes. With only 2 tries under my belt so far, I was able to pit about a half pound of cherries in like 30-60 seconds I think. Would be faster if the plunger didn't keep coming off. You do kind of have to feed them in one by one for the most part. I put a good amount in the hopper area and manually push them into the plunger area. If you try to let them auto feed in, they just bunch up until you get to the last 3. I pretty much expected it from using one my brother had so wasn't a surprise really.
