Misty of Chincoteague Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 2,365 ratings

The timeless classic and beloved story of a wild horse’s gentle filly—winner of a Newbery Honor!

On the island of Chincoteague, off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland, lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely-seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her—that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can’t live without her.

The frenzied roundup that follows on the next Pony Penning Day does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal filly Misty is another story altogether . . .

“A thrilling and long-to-be-remembered tale.” —San Francisco Chronicle

On an island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her--that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can't live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next "Pony Penning Day" does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether.

Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book has captivated generations of boys and girls both with its thrilling descriptions of true incidents from the tiny island of Chincoteague, and its realistic yet wonderfully magical atmosphere. This story of an animal brought into captivity poignantly reveals the powerful opposing forces of humans and nature. Wesley Dennis's pen-and-ink ponies are masterfully depicted with rippling muscles, shaggy coats, and free spirits. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

I sat on the floor of the library in Wapello, Iowa the first time I read "Misty".
And dreamed of owning a pony.
Today I sit on Chincoteague Island and will get to see the ponies, descendents of the ponies in this story.
Life ss full.

This is a really sweet, classic story about a brother and sister around 11 or 12 who spend the summer with their grandparents on the Chincoteage island and fall in love with a horse and work to make her their own. The story is based on an actual event that takes place every year the last month of July on the Chincoteague Island, Virginia. This is actually the book that made the Pony Swim famous and 2023 will be the 97th year that it has taken place. The book was written so long ago so feels dated but because it’s about a real thing that still happens, it’s worth the read, especially for any child that loves horses. There is a movie of the same name which I also liked. I like wholesome.

After reading many books for adults, I needed a change of pace—a story that was more happy than sad, free of tension and conflict. I picked up MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE and immediately realized that I had found what I was searching for. All of the characters—especially Paul and Maureen, the boy and girl who fall in love with Misty—are good-hearted, caring people, very much like my neighbors in Salisbury, Maryland, a town about 40 miles north of Chincoteague. My family has visited Chincoteague many times. We love it, and the book brings back many fond memories of the town and its people. Even if you never visit the Eastern Shore of Virginia in person, reading this book will make you feel at home with the people, ponies, and other animals of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.

A review from my horse-loving 8 year old:

This is a review of the book Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. This book is based on the wild Phantom and Misty. Paul Beebe road with the Saltwater Cowboys and captured Misty and Phantom. They worked for money to buy them. They bought them and fed them. The great Pied Piper came back to get the wild Phantom and left the great Misty behind with Paul and Maureen. They loved her and kept her safe. They entered her in a race and she won. Then some men came to take Misty around the world and show other children in the world about horses and ponies.

I think this book deserves five stars for making lots of children happy. I recommend this book for true horse lovers like I am.

This book is excellent but I think it is very sad when the Phantom leaves Misty for the Pied Piper.
