One other advice; I powdered on flavoring which obviously didn't stick to dry popcorn so I used a butter flavored cooking spray and spray down the popcorn and while wet, powdered on the flavoring. Most excellent.
I ordered this item on recommendation from a friend who has had one for years. In the time between when he got his and I got mine, whatever material they used to make it must have changed. We compared ours side by side and his flaps close easily and stay in position with little to no effort - either one of us could do it with a single hand. When attempting the same with mine, the flaps either flat up and out or place while you are starting to close them, or just fall down completely. Either way, there massive gaps for exploding popcorn to escape out if the popper.
Would rate zero stars if I could. Rated 3 stars on ease of cleaning because there basically is none, since you don't use oil and can't use flavorings in the popper itself.
Pretty bad. Just pop it in an instant pot or stove top pot instead.
This is nice and compact and easy to store, especially compared to my old hot air popper. The convenience of it being the popcorn bowl is pretty nice too.
The Meh -
Item claims to be dishwasher safe, but the shiny cherry red finish disappears to a milky pink after the first trip through the dishwasher. This is merely cosmetic, but someone in product development didn't work this through all the way. It's also not real good for tossing the popcorn to get an even distribution of salt and butter. With my hot air popper, I would pop into a large stainless steel bowl, drizzle the butter and sprinkle the salt, and toss the whole thing a few times to make sure that every piece had butter and salt on it.
The Bad - Closing the lid on this thing is rather difficult. Once you do manage to get it to stay shut, there's still a hole in the middle through which several unpopped kernels will fly out and into the microwave early in the popping process. Once you're done, the unit is VERY hot, even the tabs by which you're supposed to grab it.
This unit works great for me. I put in the five tablespoons of popcorn and it is ready in about 4-5 minutes. Then I add two tablespoons melted butter and a pinch of salt. Now I know what is in my popcorn and I like that a lot.
My husband isn't satisfied with the popper because he likes to put more butter on and he likes the popcorn to cook with the butter. The two times he tried this it either burned the popcorn or they didn't pop all the kernels. He went back to cooking it on the stove.
I love the fact that the silicone is dishwasher safe, so this makes for an easy clean up. I find it very easy to use and have had no problem folding it down each time. I think it may pop open a little too soon, which tends to make the popcorn go all over in the microwave, but it's not a huge problem.
We have found a place to buy the popcorn in bulk at $.55 a pound and the butter for $1.06 a pound. This will be a major savings for us because we can freeze the butter until we need it, as it lasts for 6 months frozen.
I can highly recommend this popcorn popper for anyone who wants to go butter free or add the butter after.
