These are very nice short stories. I liked "The End of Summer" best, because I've experienced the sudden random intrusion into someone's most personal moments, and I could relate to it and pull the feeling right out of it. Nicely done - there could be more, or they could be longer (each one, a book?) but they're fine the way they are.

These short stories are well written and interesting. Wish they were a little longer for the reader to feel more vested in each story. However, it is a good quick read for those wanting to burn a little bit of time while waiting for a friend or riding in public transportation.

The author did such a great job, each story drew me into the lives of the characters. All three stories left me wanting more even though I knew there were each just a short story. I loved the descriptive writing that draws you into each story.

A collection of short, sweet, and deeply emotional stories.

My favorite was Grits Girl, a sweet romance about a girl, her grits, and the love of her life.

The switching narration was a perfect way to breathe life into each of the stories.

A wonderful face paced book with great short stories!

Sometimes you're in the mood for reading but not a book that will take days to read through.

The stories started and ended on point. I was not left guessing with what happened next. How nice!

Nicely done!

This collection of stories was a little short and not quite to my taste. However, it is well written and would suit those who want a gentle, warm read.

I think the stories were well written. The description was very informative and sucked you in to the story. Wish some were longer!

Real life has beginnings and endings. Sometimes we must face an end to open our eyes to a beginning. This book contains three short stories that opened my eyes to the way that life just happens. We never know what is out there, but we have to keep searching until we find the right path for ourselves.

In Beginnings and Endings, the short story that spoke to me the most is called “The Accident”. In “The Accident”, there is a couple who are starting their day. The story speaks of all their hopes and dreams which were changed because of an accident. (I’m not giving away the story because it’s much better to read.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great characters, theme, and emotional treatment

Suen's short stories of beginnings and endings is an interesting little collection. I really liked the characters, especially in the first two, and felt that she gave them a lot of depth and intrigue in the few pages they had. Emotionally, they were powerful as well: the characters each being on the precipice of a major event in their lives. I could feel the shape of their hearts, if that makes sense. There was a quality of the unfinished for me in these however; they seemed like a well-written first chapter to a novel I'd love to read. The effect left me hanging, wondering if that was really the end. The third story used the setting and plot to a much greater degree than the first two. There are more description of vistas and more happenings in general in this last one. I found this one most powerful as a result. It was well-crafted and poignant. All in all, these are worth a read, and I think Suen turned them out well.

The Good
Short and sweet. Reads that make you think.

The Bad
They are short and the book is short - but perfect for fiction snackers, like me.

The Ugly
This is the fourth Jane Suen read for me and I like her straight style.

Beginnings and Endings is a collection of short stories by Jane Suen. The collection consists of 3 main stories, and 1 bonus read. The book is a very quick, easy and engrossing read. I didn’t think the author would be able to make this work, I was worried that the stories would feel rushed and incomplete- but I was very pleasantly surprised by what I read. The stories are short, but each one stood on its own- drawing me and keeping me reading. I didn’t feel rushed or like there was anything missing. This book really gave me something to think about, and to look at things a little differently.
The stories contain quite a lot of detail in a short amount of space. They are infused with emotion, and a little bit of heart and soul. I am pleased that I read this book and would love to read longer versions of them.
Well Done!

Thank you, Ms. Suen!
