1. It's got a good form factor
2. It is ruggedly built (I have dropped it several times and it has kept ticking without a hitch).
3. Despite it's form factor it has got a full size layout for its keys (sans number pad). Which is always important. I hate feeling cramped while typing.
4. It pairs relatively easily with devices and the Mac-specific hotkeys at the top are quite quite handy (particularly when used with the iPad)
5. It's easy to grab and slide into my bag when I need to just go.
But, that all said, there are a few drawbacks. Small stuff mostly, but chief amongst them is the Apple keyboard's need of batteries to function and it's ability to have it's bluetooth connection turned on by accident (draining the batteries of both your device and the keyboard) if the large button on its side gets touched by a feather.
Both of these issues caused me to reevaluate my selection of a keyboard and at least start to research what is out there nowadays for alternative options. Suffice it to say, I found a lot!
The best options built specifically for the Mac, that weren't built by Apple, seemed to be offered by Logitech. They have a great selection with a lot of options, but in the end I settled on their series of solar powered keyboards. They support all of the current Apple command key shortcuts, have zero need for batteries (fully charged, it can be used for three continuous months in complete darkness) and, in the case of the travel version, they have the ability to hot swap between multiple bluetooth devices. Which is handy if you need to quickly disconnect from one device and quickly pair with another (from an iPad to a desktop, for instance).
Here are the two I went with: For the iPad I went with the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K760
And for the Mac Mini I splurged and snagged the full sized Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 for Mac®
They both perform easily as well as their Apple manufactured counterparts and while they don't feel as well built as Apple's aluminum keyboards, they by no means feel cheap in any way.
Function-wise, they both have worked flawlessly. I love that the hotkeys (the "F" keys) that are in the top row of the Apple keyboard, can all be found on the Logitechs (the media-based buttons work even on the iPad!). Also, eco-stance aside, I really love that I don't have to worry about having my rechargeable batteries around and charged up when my keyboard dies. The solar cell at the top, does change the footprint (and the aesthetic if that's important to you) obviously, making the keyboard, in both cases, taller. But the exchange for battery life and the simple convenience of putting it in any kind of light to recharge it, definitely trumps these quibbles for me.
The bluetooth hot swapping on the K760? It works as advertised and is pretty damn amazing! Once paired up (easy to do as well) I was swapping between my iPad, iPhone and Macbook with a simple keystroke. It's fast and way more convenient than I originally anticipated. Definitely not a gimmicky feature! It is the real deal and quite helpful.
One odd difference between the two? The K760 keys are WAY more "clicky" than the K750. So if you are into that, or are obsessive about stealth typing, than you may want to take a note of this. I noticed it right away.
Lastly, the K750 comes with a free app you can snag from the Mac App Store that gives you real time info on your charge and the amount of light/solar energy your keyboard is currently receiving. Pretty neat to bring up and watch, not to mention handy if you need to know how much juice your keyboard currently has left. Again, it's only for K750, but it is well implemented on the Mac.
So if it wasn't clear enough yet, I will come out and say it: I am pretty smitten with these keyboards! I've used the K750 for a month now and the K760 for a little over week. They have not given me one bit of buyer's remorse. Quite the opposite actually. I wish more peripherals were made with this kind of utility and function.
Two thumbs up! Way up! Highly recommended!
+ Great Keyboard
+ Great typing feeling
+ Can connect to 3 bluetooth devices (Apple AND Android)
+ Solar (nice touch!)
+ Workaround found for most limitations
CON:
+ Doesn't feel quite as good for typing as the Logitech K750 for Mac.
+ Missing a numeric keypad (and the true DEL home/end/pgup/pgdn F13/F14/F15 keys)
---> Press Fn and Delete to act like a true DEL key (deletes right of the cursor)
+ The Ctrl Key is small and not in the keyboard's leftmost position (programmers using Emacs use Ctrl a lot) [Same a Macbook and apple wireless keyboard]
+ Half size arrow keys and no right side Ctrl key (also like Apple wireless keyboard and Macbook keyboard).
+ Feel a little rattle in the keys (you shake the keyboard you can hear the keys rattle... same as Apple wireless keyboard)
This is a lovely keyboard... it feels nice, they keys have a nice press feeling a little different than the macbook
which seems to stop short of a normal full strike. This keyboard somehow feels a little "deeper"...
The k750 has a smoother more firm and rubbery feeling to it.
Both the K760 and the apple keyboard have a bit of a loose key feel to it (you shake the keyboard and you'll hear the keys
rattling... not so on the k750. The apple wireless keyboard is very similar to the K760. But frankly, after using any of those
3 keyboards for a while you won't mind the difference one way or the other. They are all very good keyboards.
It works well with my Macbook Air (as expected) but also perfectly well on my Nexus 7 android tablet and my galaxy S3 Android phone!
It doesn't have the dedicated Android keys that you might find on the logitech android keyboard (which I also played with) but this is
a MUCH nicer full size keyboard!
For various reasons, I ended up with the following three devices connected to my MacBook Air:
+ Apple bluetooth keyboard
+ Logitech K750 for Mac
+ Logitech K760 for Mac (this review).
Problem : F keys to adjust display brightness don't work (on K760 and K750)
Solution: Disconnect Apple bluetooth keyboard and all they F keys shortcuts now magically work fine on both K760/K750.
Problem: K760 keyboard & Apple keyboard both are missing a dedicated "DEL" key (the delete on those two keyboards is really a Backspace.
Solution: Press the "fn" key as you press the delete and it then behaves like a real delete key (i.e. deletes on the right of the cursor).
This works for both the K760 and the Apple keyboard.
Problem: Some people will miss the pgUp/pgDn/home/end and numeric keypad.
Solution: get the K750 or purchase a 3rd pary bluetooth keypad (mixed review on those)
Since I don't have a lot of numerical data entry to perform, the choice between the wireless apple keyboard
and the two logitech (K750 and K760) is purely based on the typing feel.
On that note, the K750 does have a slightly larger Control key which is conveniently located in the leftmost
corner of the keyboard which is VERY useful for a programmer using the Emacs editor a lot (i.e. ME).
BOTTOM LINE:
This keyboard is VERY NICE.
The 3 bluetooth devices (apple/android) is a neat trick if you have multiple devices (most of us do these days)
The solar is a nice touch.
I like that it's bluetooth (doesn't use up a precious usb port)
I would pick this keyboard over the Apple wireless one any day as they have the same typing feel but more features for same (or cheaper) price.
Between the K750 and this one is a bit of a toss up. I like that the K750 has a nice full Ctrl key, full size arrow keys and don't care
either way about the fact that it has a numeric keyboard (many people might). I'll have to use both keyboard over a few more days
to decide which I will keep. That in itself should speak volume to the fact that both are excellent devices and either one should
make you a happy camper!
Positives:
o Great key feel. Very responsive. Even better than a Macbook Pro.
o Appears to be a very solid product, not cheap feeling. Which is surprising for its low price.
o Easy to set up.
o Compact but effective. Not too small.
o I'd buy it again.
Cons:
o The solar cell takes up CONSIDERABLE room on the top of the keyboard. They don't have another version that is battery powered otherwise I would have gotten that one. I don't mind replacing an occasional battery and would have preferred a smaller, battery powered keyboard. (I know, the solar power may considered a Positive by many people. Just not by me.)
o For some reason, when typing, the Volume buttons are activated even though they are not touched. It sends the volume up a notch or two. Happens about once per day, so far, and is inconsistent. Other than it functions perfectly.
Top reviews from other countries
1.Can connect with 3 Bluetooth devices simultaneously without any glitch.
2.Solar charging...even with light from your computer or from a light bulb.
I feel that I got 2012 model I ordered this product in 2014, my seller told me that this product is not in production anymore that is why I got 2012 model ...(manufactured in 2012)
If you stopped typing it for about 5-10 seconds ...you have to press an extra key to wake this keyboard to again start typing.
Apart from that this is an superb keyboard this is my first Bluetooth keyboard and I'm loving it.
You have to learn to work the keys combination(like Ctrl x,delete, etc) when you are working on Windows 7 .It does also works with windows 7,in case someone is wondering about it.
