Why Cast Iron?Cast iron cookware distributes and retains heat evenly. Cast Iron has been used for centuries to slow-cook things like soups, stews, sauces, breads, and more. On top of that, you can broil, bake, or roast in the oven up to 500°F. Use wooden, silicon, or nylon utensils for the best care as metal can scratch. |
Enameled FinishThe beautiful enamel finish of your Crock-Pot Braiser allows for incredibly versatile use in your kitchen. Use the Braiser not just to braise but also to marinate, cook, serve, and/or store your meals. The beautiful pop of color on the enamel exterior makes these Braisers a staple item on anyone’s table or stovetop. |

It IS heavy like cast iron cookware should be. Clean up is easy-peasy with the ceramic coating inside - hot, soapy water and a sponge. I got the sapphire blue color and it's beautiful although color wasn't important to me. I would have taken anything.
Maybe next Christmas he'll get me the larger oval I have my eye on! Hinting starts now. ;)
It was a 3 quart size and made by Lodge, but my son (the dishwasher of the family) demolished it by constantly leaving it "soaking" with metal utensils in the bottom of it, so over time the exposed cast-iron edges rusted, on top of the enameled surface getting nicked up. It was a good braiser, but I always wished it was larger when I prepared certain dishes in it.
I had been tirelessly searching for its replacement, and narrowed it down to this one. It arrived fairly quickly, and when I prepared our lamb roast for Thanksgiving, it didn't disappoint. It's very solid and well built. It was perfectly wide and deep enough (given its 5 quart size). I don't particularly care for the steel/metal finish on the handle instead of it being black, but it's doable. It was a fraction of the cost of a 5 qt. Le Creuset braiser, and it handles meals just as well, too. I love that it has the lighter finish on the interior and none of the enamel had any blemishes or imperfections upon arrival.
I have read other reviews during my search for enameled cast-iron braisers, where customers complain about their weight...
Well... It IS cast-iron, and the larger the pan, the heavier it is. So if you cannot handle a heavy pot or desire a light one, this pan is not for you.
Now that my son is older and has learned the value of things, I see this one lasting a lot longer than its predecessor, and I am not left wishing it was just a little bit larger when I am cooking, either.
If you are using it as an art piece, or for making things like stews, pot roasts, stove top to oven, or as a casserole, this is phenomenal. The color is good, it wipes out easily. The heat DOES transfer to the lid, lid handle and pot handles so always wear protection no matter what part you are touching.
If you are going to use this in coals, for in-the-ground cowboy or chuck wagon cooking, or are rough with your pots, either go for plain cast iron or La Creuset.
I am a long time cast iron user, and I loved this pot. I have used it for a pot roast, a casserole, and warming bone broth (which can be super oily) and it has cleaned up well every time. To store, make sure the rim of the lid is dry and i often put a small towel square in to lift up the lid slightly from the rim just to let any moisture out. I haven't had a speck of rust on it. For everyday kitchen cooking would highly recommend.
I received this product and I am a little sad as it was delivered with a chip in the lid. But, it wasn't a huge chip and this thing still made a mean braised short rib recipe. So the functionality is fine. I decided to just keep it.

So I searched on Amazon and came across this 5 qt Crock Pot unit. I was so skeptical about the quality becasue it was so cheap compared to the Le creuset. But I figured what the heck, if it comes and looks really cheap I will just return it. Well, when I received it I could not believe the quality. It was heavy cast iron and had a great ceramic finish.
I used it this morning to saute onions for a typical Italian onion pie. It worked perfectly! Even heat all around, and the lid fit snuggly. I rated this item 5 stars, but if I could I would rate the value 10 stars.
Now all this being said, and I am so pleased, there is a minuscule almost imperceivable difference between the Crock Pot and the Le creuset, and it is in the interior finish. The Le creuset has a flawless ceramic interior finish, and I did find a few specs unfinished in the Crock Pot (seen in pic above and zoom in). Mind you this did not affect cooking the food in any way. Nevertheless, I would choose the Crock Pot over the Le creuset any day of the week! Believe me you will not be disappointed choosing this Braiser.
