Product Description
Product Description
The TLM 102 defines a new generation of Neumann studio microphone. It sets a new performance and value standard for microphones at this price. It's reduced overall size contributes to an exceptionally compact appearance, which unites all of the typical design components of a Neumann microphone. The harmonious proportions and gleaming grille ring ensure that even at first glance, the TLM 102 attracts attention. The TLM 102 delivers impressive sound. It's newly developed large-diaphragm capsule (cardioid) clocks a maximum sound pressure level of 144 dB, permiting the recording of percussion, drums, and amps at extremely high output levels. Acoustic instruments benefit from the exceptionally fast transient response of the TLM 102. Where the TLM102 really shines is with vocals and speech. It has a slight boost above 6 kHz providing excellent vocal presence in an overall mix. Up to 6 kHz the frequency response is extremely linear, ensuring minimal coloration and a clearly defined, extended bass range. The capsule has an elastic suspension system reducing handling and structure-borne noise. A pop screen integrated into the grille serves to suppress plosives in vocal and speech recording. Due to its price and flexible field of application, the TLM 102 is ideal for home recording and project studio, as well the broadcasting area, especially when clear lines of sight to the speakers are a priority. The TLM 102 is available in black and nickel; a stand mount is included.

And when it comes to vocals and speech, the TLM 102 really shines: a slight boost above 6 kHz provides for excellent presence of the voice in the overall mix. Up to 6 kHz, the frequency response is extremely linear, ensuring minimal coloration and a clearly defined bass range.

SMALL, SMART & POWERFULThe TLM 102 brings Neumann quality to even the smallest studio. Like its more expensive siblings, the TLM 102 combines technical excellence with a beautifully balanced sound for silky vocals, crisp guitars and powerful drums. With its cardioid pattern and an integrated pop screen the TLM 102 is a joy to use, even for novices. |
THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO THE NEUMANN SOUNDThe TLM 102 is Neumann’s most affordable large diaphragm condenser microphone. And, of course, it is a true Neumann, designed and manufactured in Germany with great attention to every detail. Compared to more expensive Neumann microphones, the TLM 102 is reduced in size and features, but Neumann would never compromise on sound quality. |
BIG SOUND FOR SMALL STUDIOSDue to its enormous dynamic range of 132 dB and a remarkably uniform cardioid pickup pattern, the TLM 102 is a very easy-to-use microphone for home and project studios, and also for demanding live applications. Its uncolored sound and fast transient response make the TLM 102 an excellent choice for male and female vocals as well as a wide range of instruments. |

Signal output is strong enough for soft instruments, so no need to crank gain. While the before mentioned may not seem like a big deal to most musicians, finger-picked instruments like the classical guitar are relatively soft and many mics fall short, requiring the gain sliders to be buried just to twitch the meters! Plus, the ultra low noise of the 102 allow delicate tones like harmonics to shine in the track without a hint of background noise.
Finally, in a pinch, the 102 makes a great stage mic for acoustic and classical guitar. Unlike many recording mics, the 102 is small (5"/116mm length), robust and has plenty of output. Bring your own clip as the 102 won't fit most stage mic clips.
I'm extremely pleased with my of Neumann MTL 102 MT: impeccable fit and finish, sweet, natural and balanced sound and clean output. For recording classical guitar and ukulele, the 102 is my new favorite. Now I need to buy another one so I can record stereo!
I kinda expected it to sound a lot like the 421, maybe more airy and bright because it's a condenser mic (especially after reading the snippety comment about not being any better than a $200 mic; although I do agree about Sam Ash being horrible to deal with)...anyway, I was not expecting such a huge difference in sound quality. I think I've finally found the open/airy/pin-drop-yet ballsy/reasonably priced mic I've been looking for all these years.
I tested both mics with vocals and acoustic guitar and according to my ears, the Nueman just blew the Sennheiser out of the water on both accounts. I don't really expect it to outdo the 421 on snare drum, but I bet the 102 would be great along with it for double miking.
I'm sure some may disagree and say I shouldn't have used the Sennheiser for comparison...but then again lots of people still think they can get away with a Shure 58 for vocals and 57 for snare...or that a Porsche is the best car. Please don't even think about using a Shure under $2,000 or Rode (at any price) for comparison....maybe one of AKG's $1,500+ mics.
Just based on quick ear tests, which is what matters to me, the Neumann 102 is by far the best microphone I've ever used under $1,000. Just make sure it's sold and fulfilled by Amazon so you can return it if it shows up pre-opened/used/box beat to hell; which has become so common with all online music stores
I’d like to make a point that because you pay more for a mic dose not mean it’s better, yes of course it’ll sound different, more clear, crisp, but it depends what your using it for as well as how your voice fits it! Although you can fix that with EQ but my main point is this mic is absolutely mind blowing, it’s small but wow!!! The sound is just incredible, I’m currently using the scarlet 2i2 solo interface which I’d also suggest is a great combination, running from logic x pro, just when I plugged it in and recorded some rough drafts to a song I’m writing, THE CLEARNESS AND SOUND IS SO GOOD I MEAN YOU COUOD FALL IM LOVE WITH YOUR VOICE,! I also have to add it’s a verry hounest mic , it speaks back the way you sound perfect! I’ve also tested out the Neumann TLM 103 and that was amazing too but I seriously like the TLM 102 better in my opinion I’d say for the 103 your paying an extra 800$-1000$ for the size , and a few extra adjustments , but hounestly GET this mic if your looking for an upgrade it is verry affordable for a high end mic, we’re not talking about standerd beginner mics or even slightly more advanced mics ! This is just on the high end grid of professional studio sounding mics ! I’ll post a link in a few days that runs through a varioty of different tests, from voice overs to singing to rnb to give people a general idea of what they can expect!
