Harvest Your Tomatoes Sooner

Get a Jump Start on Planting

When you buy starter plants, you’re getting young live plants that are typically several weeks old, which can help you make up for lost time in your garden.

Grow Strong, Vigorous Plants

Growing tomatoes should be fun, not stressful. We care for our seedlings in a way that encourages the development of strong roots and vigorous growth. Your plants will be well on their way to maturity once received, thus speeding up the growing process.

Harvest Your Tomatoes Sooner

When you start with a Bonnie Plant, your plant is closer to maturity, which means you’ll be able to start harvesting and enjoying your homegrown tomatoes much faster than if you started with a seed.

Grow Your Best Fresh Tomatoes at Home

Planting tomato

Tomatoes growing in cage

Tomatoes ready to harvest

Plant

Plant tomatoes after your region’s final frost date for a summer harvest. Plant in a warm, bright spot, as they need 6–8 hours of sunlight, and bury the bottom two-thirds of the plant, including the root ball. Check plant tags for complete instructions.

Grow

To help support your tomatoes, give them a stake, trellis, or cage to climb as they grow. Add mulch (chipped mulch, straw, or shredded leaves) around your tomato plants to help the soil retain moisture and prevent weeds.

Harvest

Tomatoes will start out green and turn their mature color as they ripen. Ready-to-pick fruit will feel firm and have a deep color. Store your picked tomatoes at room temperature indoors or in a shady place outside.

1.0 out of 5 stars Half my plants came in looking really horrible!
Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2024
EDIT: Spoke with Burpee and they are suppose to send replacement plants.

I went ahead and ordered 2 4pks of the Cherokee Purples. Half the plants came in looking horrible and will probably die, the other half looked a little better, but are still in rough shape. Very disappointed! Waiting for response to my ask for a replacement

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was hoping for
Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2019
I ordered these Cherokee Purple tomato plants on the Amazon website. My local stores were not selling Cherokee Purples this year. I had grown Cherokee Purple tomatoes before from plants and they are the best tasting. My plants arrived in excellent condition. They had been well protected by special green-house like cylinders inside a study shipping box. You should know I had ordered a set of four Cherokee Purple tomato plants. When I opened the shipping carton I inspected the plants. There were four. They appeared to be in good condition . Each pot contained a tag that identified it as a Cherokee Purple tomato. I thought everything was good. However, when I went to set my plants in the ground outside I was suprised. One of the pots had two tags. The forward one showed a Cherokee Purple tomato. The tag just behind it identified it as a Lemon Boy tomato. I won't know what kind of a tomato plant it really is until the fruit starts to mature. In addition one of the tomato plants failed to thrive after planting. I waited quite a few weeks hoping the plant would recover, caring for it like the other three plants. In fact it died. Now I have but three living tomato plants, and only two of them appear to be Cherokee Purple tomato plants. This was an expensive way to buy plants. As this order did not meet my expectations, I will be doing something else next year. Very likely I will buy seeds and grow my own plants next time around.
