Oh wait, forgot about healthy, oh well, I'll get something healthy tomorrow.
This happens all the time. It gets frustrating because it seems I can't satisfy my late night cravings unless its junk. However, one night, fruit leathers seem to do the trick. Test it again the next night to make sure it's not a one off and nope, totally satisfied. But looking at the box they came in, what are all these extra ingredients in there?
Got to be a better way... and .... I bought this. Honestly, couldn't be happier. Fresh fruit from the grocery store. Give it a good wash. Slice them up. 8 hours latter, got fresh organic fruit leathers. Apples and Strawberries are my favorite thus far.
Instructions are easy to follow and with an adjustable temperature on the dehydrator, they turn out great every time. That said, the racks are quite thin. Some of the instructions say to leave product in for 14-16 hours on high. After 8 hours, the racks have some good flex in them and have gone soft. Not deformed or melted like some other reviews, but definitely soft. I would not recommend leaving things going for more than 8 or 9 hours, without shutting the machine down and letting the racks cool and re harden. (about 20 mins if opened and set racks out on the counter to cool)
My only qualms about the product is the trays are a bit of a pain to wash after, with small bits of fruit stuck to them. Have to be really aggressive sometimes to clean them.
So that brings us back to the original question in the title. Will it dehydrate socks after using them in the gym? Who knows. Would probably stink the house up pretty bad. Leave socks for the washer/dryer.

So how has the product held up since purchase? Happy to write its still going good. The fan that blows the hot air has gotten a little fluttery in noise. But does the job fine. Since purchase, I have put a ton of food through the dehydrator. Beef jerky (yeah, kind of looks like little dog poops when its finished) tastes great.
Bananas, amazing. Apples, great. Pears, perfect. Blueberries.... a bit of a struggle, but still possible.
Through trial and error, I think I have the system down pat now. The key is to slice things pretty thin, which speeds up dehydration times dramatically. With an apple corer tool and Mandoline to slice, I can have a rack filled in about 1 min. 8 to 9 hours later, fruit leathers are good to go. Also helps my neighbour has an apple tree in his backyard and passes a ton of apples for free. My dehydrator basically runs from end of August to end of September almost 24 hours a day, trying to use up all the apples.
As a tip: It's also good to rotate your trays about halfway through, as it gets a little hotter on the bottom than top.
Same technique is good for strawberries, pears and bananas.
Blueberries are a different story. They need almost 18 hours. Even then, they could possibly use more depending on how plump they are. But if you want dehydrated blueberries and have the patience, totally doable. Again, just let your racks cool a bit every 8 hours so they don't melt.
Hope this review helps. If I haven't reviewed past this, the dehydrator is still running good.

It is not completely quiet because it contains a fan, but the fan is necessary to speed up the drying process.
There is no option to operate without the fan.
The trays are not non-stick. Drying foods can stick to the trays.
Cleaning the trays is easy if you soak them awhile in hot soapy water, then scrub gently with a soft brush.
I like the way the trays are collapsible for storage (simply turn them).
This unit is lightweight, but sturdy and not tipsy. It's easy to move and store.
The instruction manual is readable and helpful.
In operation, the bottom, sides and top are warm, but not hot.
In that regard it seems safe to use near most materials, and where children may be present.
I bought this dehydrator specifically to use up an overabundance of end-of-season garden tomatoes.
I did not blanch or peel the tomatoes, but simply sliced them thick and dried them.
At the end, when there were not enough tomatoes left to fill the trays, I filled them with apples.
A fully loaded batch of thick-sliced tomatoes can take 28 hours or more to complete, but it's worth the time and effort.
Ripe tomatoes with nothing added make a surprisingly sweet and delicious chewy snack. An excellent way to use up that last of the garden tomatoes ripening in a box in the basement.
Slightly green tomatoes are just as good with a little salt and sugar sprinkled on them before drying.
All-green tomatoes are bitter, even with sugar added.
With all trays loaded, the bottom trays dry faster.
You will want to check them periodically anyway, so rotating the trays is no trouble.
With tomatoes and other fruits, I flip them once when they are dry enough to handle. A plastic or silicon flipper helps to loosen them.
This seems to help the drying process, but more importantly reduces the problem of sticking to the trays.
That said I’ve tried it on a couple of different foods mostly fruits and after 24 to 48 hours, none of them were actually dehydrated. I think the set up of it for food it’s just really really inefficient because the layers are so close to each other. It works great for the filament because none of the layers are in there so it’s just an open space with air holes cutting the top, don’t buy this for dehydrating food though.

And you can't beat the price, either! Salton has a reputation for making excellent appliances, and this one is no exception.
I would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to make their own jerky, veggie chips, or dried fruits. Accept no substitute!
