Update. A few years later, we love it as much as before. Whatever letters were chewed upon show some wear, but the rest of the set still looks great.
The puzzle is very easy to put together so children shouldnt have any issues. The main benefit from this is seeing the capital letter paired with the lowercase. Being the same color and being placed beside each other help the child to remember the two forms as a set. This is such a great learning tool. It's also an added bonus that behind the letters, there are pictures that start with that letter.
The quality is amazing. It's a nice, sturdy wooden puzzle that wont be destroyed in a younger sibling decides to chew on it and it cannot be folded or ripped in half.
Pros:
-Big pieces compared to a lot of other wooden puzzles
-Has both upper and lowercase letters. It is SO important that children learn lowercase letters (you obviously use them a ton more than uppercase!), but sadly most teaching tools only incorporate uppercase letters.
-Pieces seem sturdy
-Colorful pictures
Cons:
-As another reviewer pointed out (and posted a picture of), the letter S (especially lowercase s) does not look like the manufacturer's photo. It is much chunkier and not very well defined.
-The picture behind uppercase S does not make an S sound at all. It is a picture of shoes. S does not say sh. S says sssss. Just like you wouldn't put a picture of a cheerio under the letter C, or a thumb under the letter T, you should not have a picture of shoes under the letter S. Very confusing to a child when you're trying to teach a them the basic letter sounds and they say, "r, r, rope. s, s, shoes".
-Several of the pictures are ambiguous. For example. When you picture a wagon in your head, most people think of a little red wagon that children ride/play in. The picture under W shows a horse and buggy, or horse and carriage. Most children young enough to be using this puzzle probably wouldn't be able to tell you the name of the picture if it were just a buggy or just a carriage, and when they see the two together, they automatically think "horse", not "buggy", or "carriage". There is a picture of a rabbit under R. My son has always used the word bunny or bunny rabbit, so that is confusing. The picture under N is a family of birds sitting in a nest.
Overall, the puzzle is great. I would almost rather it not even have the pictures under the letters, though.
The construction is wonderful. The wood pieces are sturdy and hold up to lots of playtime. We have many Melissa and Doug toys and will continue to purchase them. They are not only great from a learning aspect, but also are made with great quality and care.

With time colour of alphabets gets dim but still very useful and effective
Disappointed at the quality and presentation of the puzzle as a whole - the material is flimsy, looks cheap, most importantly for learning, some of the letters in particular i and j are so poorly made that they are identifiable because they are next to I and J but not the actual alphabets themselves. Very poor and lack of attention to detail especially when you consider that M&D specializes in early learning.
Add: several adjustment needed to be made to the alphabets to make learning clearer and more precise - particularly poor would be i, j, s. Extremely disappointing considering the price of the product. The material is cheap, and unsafe - the alphabets are not cut well with Tiny wood splinters that are hazardous to young children.
