Lark! The Herald Angels Sing: A Meg Langslow Mystery (Meg Langslow Mysteries Book 24) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 910 ratings

New York Times bestselling author Donna Andrews returns with another Meg Langslow mystery written "firmly in the grand tradition of Agatha Christie's Christmas books" (Toronto Globe and Mail).

It’s Christmastime in Caerphilly and Meg, full of holiday spirit, is helping out with the town's festivities. While directing a nativity pageant and herding the children participating in it, she finds a surprise in the manger: a live baby.

A note from the mother, attached to the baby girl’s clothes, says that it’s time for her father to take care of her—and implicates Meg’s brother, Rob, as the father. And while a DNA test can reveal whether there's any truth to the accusation, Rob's afraid the mere suspicion could derail his plan to propose to the woman he loves. Meg quickly realizes it's up to her to find the baby's real identity.

She soon discovers that the baby—named Lark according to the fateful note—may be connected to something much bigger. Something that eventually puts a growing number of Meg’s friends and family in danger. And before long, Meg realizes she can’t fix things single-handedly. Meanwhile, a war is brewing between Caerphilly and its arch-rival Clay County—and it's not a snowball fight. Can Meg bring everyone together in time for the holidays?

As in her previous Christmas mysteries, Andrews continues to write “firmly in the grand tradition of Agatha Christie’s Christmas books” (
Toronto Globe and Mail) with a book that will put cozy lovers everywhere in a holly jolly mood.

I've been writing since I learned to print, but didn't get published until Murder with Peacocks won the Malice Domestic/St. Martins Press Best First Traditional Mystery contest in spring 1998. Since then I've written six more comic mysteries books featuring ornamental blacksmith Meg Langslow: Murder with Puffins (2000), Revenge of the Wrought Iron Flamingos (2001), Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon (2003), We'll Always Have Parrots (2004), Owls Well That Ends Well (2005), and No Nest for the Wicket (August 2006). I've also started another series in with the sleuth, Turing Hopper, is an artificial intelligence personality living inside a corporate computer: You've Got Murder (2002), Click Here for Murder (2003), Access Denied (2004), and Delete All Suspects (2005).

Andrews tops the preceeding books each and every time. How is that possible?? Who doesn't want to be a resident of this wonderful town? Not only are the characters a hoot, but Ms. Andrews is a Master of plot and dialogue. Thank you, Donna Andrews. I was having a pretty crummy holiday, what with losing my wonderful Egyptian Mao, and constant companion, Miss Sugar Kowalski, (Shugs to her friends), after 18 years and being confined to my bed due to illness. But, once again, your book and the narration helped me escape my pain. Can't wait for the next chance to escape!

It’s Christmas in Caerphilly, and Meg Langslow has gotten herself wrangled into directing the Christmas pageant for Trinity Episcopal. During the rehearsal, when “Mary” announces that the baby Jesus needs a diaper change, Meg calls a break for the cast and goes to check on the baby. This year, the baby Jesus is being played by Noah, the infant son of Reverend Robyn. But when Meg takes the baby to Robyn’s office for the fresh diaper, she discovers that Noah has been with Robyn the whole time.

So who is this baby? And where did it come from?

As Meg looks over the baby, she finds a note. It’s from the mother, saying that she can’t afford to take cake of her, but that Rob is clearing doing with with Mutant Wizards, so he should take of her. Because she’s his. This hits Meg hard, as Rob is her brother, and Mutant Wizards is the software company he owns. But she’s also worried, because she knows that he is about to propose to his girlfriend Delaney, and Delaney will definitely not be happy about this development.

Meg calls the Chief of Police first, so they can try to find the child’s mother, and then she calls Rob with the bad news. He denies any possibility that the child could be his, but Delaney gest upset and storms out anyway. Another look at the note makes then think that the girl’s name is Lark, and soon police officers and a social worker are at the church, looking for the mother and collecting evidence, including DNA from the infant.

It turns out that Meg and her husband Michael are the only available foster parents during the busy Christmas season, so Lark goes home with Meg, to keep her safe. And when her mother does show up, it turns out that she needs a place to be safe also.

Janet Caverly has been living in nearby Clay County. Her husband got a job with the city. As an assistant treasurer, he had knowledge of what happened in the county. And when he was asked to launder the money that the sheriff had been making from his illegal moonshine and marijuana sales, he couldn’t stomach it. He tried going to the federal authorities, but the sheriff found out and came after him. Janet took the baby to safety while her husband tried to find a way out the job, and out of the county. But the Clay County police frame him for murder, so Janet knew she had to go on the run.

While the men want to infiltrate Clay County like ninjas to try to rescue Mark, Meg has another idea. She understands that it takes a village to raise a child, and sometimes it takes a village to keep that child’s family safe too.

Lark! The Herald Angels Sing is book 24 in Donna Andrews’ Meg Langslow series. I am a big fan of these books. While these books all have the birds in the titles, the stories are more nuanced than most cozies. Andrews uses a lot of creativity in her plotting, but one thing that is consistent is Meg’s crazy family. Her family has a lot of personality and a wide variety of useful skills and connections. While she is the star of these mysteries, a lot of her investigating is her reaching out to family and friends to find details that she puts together into a final theory. And I love this about her, so I love these books.

Donna Andrews is one of my favorite authors and I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of her books. But her latest story has taken my pleasure to a whole new level!

Filled with her usual cast of delightful and zany characters, it is a welcome addition to her "Christmas mysteries" - which are an integral part of my Christmas. What makes it special, though, is her fabulous plot which showcases the incredible power of women!! How I needed to be reminded of that - and that good cheer and laughter sometimes are the best weapons against evil. Looking ahead, it is a perfect Christmas for many!!

I love losing myself in Meg's world, especially at Christmas time, and look forward to each new release. It is satisfying to see how Meg has matured through the series - no more rebel, she has learned to appreciate each member of her extended family. In this novel we meet old friends and a few new ones- even the minor characters are vividly portrayed. While not as comic as some earlier books in the series, this was a great and unexpected adventure! Read it!!!

I love Donna Andrews' books, especially the Christmas ones when we usually see the return of old characters. This one arrived in my mailbox at noon and I had read the entire book before I went to bed. As usual there were many laugh out loud moments and I was smiling throughout the book.
We find out early in the book who the bad guys are but it doesn't diminish the story at all. The creative ending that demonstrates the power of women who are determined to ensure that everyone is home for Christmas is unique and heartwarming.
Love the usual cast of characters and the appearance of old and new favourites. Including Seth Early's flock of Houdini like sheep! Will be rereading this book soon.

Donna Andrew's holiday cozies are a highlight, fun, humourous and jam-packed with adventure. I love Meg's crazy supportive family this time there's a live baby left in the manger, neighbouring county shenanigans, car chases, ninjas in trouble and the most creative use of Christmas carollers. A must read to start of the festive season.

4.0 out of 5 stars Etwas überladen
