Product Description
Product Description
For grinding larger quantities of coffee beans for a coffee-drinking crowd, Capresso's commercial-grade Infinity grinder handles 8-1/2 ounces of beans at a time. Sixteen different settings--four each in the four categories of extra fine, fine, regular, and coarse--let you adjust the grind to the specific blend of coffee and method of brewing. The finest setting is ideal for preparing Turkish coffee, which is a rare feature to find in a grinder. A built-in timer sets the grind for anywhere between 5 and 60 seconds so you can walk away without having to constantly press a button to continue the grinding process. The Infinity has an advanced conical burr design made of steel that is usually only found on commercial grinders. This burr design slows down the gears and reduces the amount of friction and heat to preserve coffee's flavor and aroma. The coffee container holds up to 4 ounces of grounds and remains sealed during grinding. For safety, the bean container also needs to be locked into place for the Infinity to operate. Also, for easy cleaning, the bean container and upper burr lift off so you can clean the grinding chamber with the included brush and wipe down the and heavy-duty zinc die-cast housing with Stainless Steel finish.
Tips for Use
- The Infinity Burr Grinder will only grind when the black dot on the bean container points to one of the fineness settings. Turn the timer and grinding starts instantly.
- Turning the bean container marking (black dot) outside of the fineness settings will stop the grinding immediately. Turning it back to the desired fineness will resume grinding as long as the timer is still running (pulse grinding).
- Make sure the bean container is empty before removing it from the base otherwise beans will scatter around.

There are a couple of what I consider obvious design flaws. As others have noted, there is a small recess at the top of the removable grinding burr where beans consistently get trapped. It's only one bean at a time that gets hung up and the bean is removed easily enough, but it's still a nuisance that could be easily remedied with a small plastic cap made to cover the recess. I would certainly be willing to pay a few dollars more for that fix.
The other obvious design flaw is with the electrical cord. The length of the cord is fine, it is a heavy duty cord, and the plug is nice and sturdy. The problem is with the way the cord leaves the machine. The cord is attached to the bottom of the grinder, up inside a recess. From there the cord moves freely and proceeds away from the back of the machine through a half-round cutout on the bottom edge of the machine casing. The problem is that if you lift the grinder off the counter, as I do to clean it after every use, the electrical cord moves away from the half-round cutout and is then easily pinched when you replace the grinder on your counter. I have had the grinder for just over two months and I can already see that the cord is wearing at the point where it gets pinched by the bottom of the machine's casing. So I would caution others to be careful about the position of the power cord whenever you set the machine down. (The cord wear that I have observed only appears to be a problem with the heavier stainless steel models.)
Other reviewers have said that they wash the removable burr with hot water. Not a good idea. There is some non-stainless metal on the top side of the removable burr that will corrode. I use the provided brush, a small toothbrush, and then a damp paper towel to clean the grinding chamber and burrs.
With these few problems noted, I would readily buy this grinder again. This grinder produces a very consistent, high-quality grind, and I can taste the difference over my old burr grinder even with drip coffee, which is what I usually drink. The taste difference alone wins me over. I have also found that I use fewer beans per cup because the higher quality grind results in much better flavor extraction. I would say that translates into money saved, but I end up making more coffee because it tastes so good!
One final observation is that the machine's grind setting was "tight" when I first began using it. At the outset I had to use a very coarse setting to get the grind I wanted for drip coffee, but the grind setting seemed to gradually loosen up over the first few weeks of use. After that the machine seemed to be perfectly calibrated. If you have a similar experience to mine at the first, I would suggest that you resist any impulse to make mechanical adjustments.
I give this grinder five stars despite the design flaws because the combination of performance, overall build quality, and value is to my knowledge unsurpassed. Best of all, the coffee I now make at home tastes at least as good as that served by the best coffee shop in town.
UPDATE:
I've been using this grinder daily for about 21 months now and I've made some observations that bear mentioning. For some reason, it no longer works at the coarse grind settings. I would rarely use those settings, so that's not a big problem for me, though it could be for some. But I'm also finding that the machine does not always work at a medium grind setting. Sometimes I have to rotate the hopper all the way to the finest grind setting to get the grinder working and then rotate it back the other way to a not-so-fine setting.
The other thing I've observed may be unique to the stainless steel model which I bought because I thought it would be more durable. The external markings for grind settings have nearly disappeared. I've never used anything more than a damp cloth on my grinder. In fact, I think the markings have simply rubbed off from holding the machine in my bare hands as I clean out the grinding chamber.
Since it doesn't appear this grinder will last much more than 2 years, and in view of the way the markings rub off of the stainless steel case, I don't recommend paying extra for the stainless model. I still like this grinder, though. I would still give it 5 stars, and I'll probably buy another when this one fails me. I'll just get the black plastic model instead of the stainless steel.
UPDATE COMPARING THE STAINLESS STEEL AND BLACK PLASTIC MODELS:
When I could no longer get a consistent grind with my original stainless model, I bought one of the less expensive black plastic models and I much prefer it. The lettering and grind setting marks do not appear to rub off of the plastic housing, making it easier to use and more attractive. It is also lighter and therefore much easier to handle for cleaning. And it is MUCH quieter than the stainless model. So I definitely recommend the black plastic model over the stainless steel.
OCTOBER 30, 2013 UPDATE:
It's now been 26 months of daily use since I bought the black plastic model and I have not had a single problem with it. Rereading my original review, I should perhaps mention that the electrical cord problem noted there is limited to the stainless steel model. The black plastic model has no such problem, and I continue to be very pleased with it.
Here's a concise list of pros and specific comments for the Capresso Infinity 565.05 Conical Burr Grinder:
PROS:
1. Grind Settings-
16 grind settings (4 different grinds with 4 specific setting marks for each type of grind) are quite sufficient for grinding beans for a drip coffeemaker or most other types of coffeemakers. I grind my medium roast beans using the grind setting at Medium/Regular grind (the farthest mark to the right of the four distinct settings for the Medium grind), and I set the timer setting to (4) to grind at Regular and to prepare 4 or 5 cups of coffee.
2, No static or messy grounds-
the plastic ground bean container does NOT cause "static cling" of the ground coffee beans and I have nothing to clean up, on my counter, when I remove and empty the ground coffee container. I believe that I experience no "static problem" since my machine is made of the stainless steel/zinc housing and interior parts.
3. No movement of the grinder when it's on and grinding-
There is no movement or problem of the machine "moving around from vibrations" while it's grinding, since the metal housing and parts give it sufficient weight to "stay put" on the counter. I have placed the grinder on a tray (the Handy Caddy) that glides on tiny wheels on two interlocking trays. With the gliding trays, I simply pull the tray with the stationary Capresso machine forward and toward me, from the back of the counter and forward to the counter's edge, so it's easier to use and I don't have to lift the weight of the metal grinder machine to bring it closer to me.
4. Noise level-
The Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder is not loud at all and is actually one of the quietest of all the burr grinders I researched and watched being used on video demonstrations.
5. Quality of the prepared coffee-
Yes, the reviews and claims, that burr grinders add a deeper and more flavorful result to prepared coffee, I have found to be true. Paying more to buy specialty gourmet coffee beans, such as Hawaiian Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain beans, deserves a good grinder to properly grind the beans. The burr grinder certainly meets that challenge.
CONS:
None to date.
Before purchasing the Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder, I researched all of the current top brands of burr grinders. My final decision to buy the Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinder was based on my research and high ratings of this grinder. The conical burr grinders I feel are better performers and are definitely easier to clean and to operate than blade or disc grinders. The Capresso's stainless steel housing and steel conical burrs/parts are superior in manufacturing and performance, when compared to those burr grinders that are made of plastic housings and interior parts. I'm very glad I bought this grinder and I look forward to many cups of delicious coffee and years of service.
