So her current Chromebook has like a Intel Celeron processor with 2 GB memory and a 32 GB internal storage, which sucks. I had put in a 128 GB SD card in there to give her some more storage.
So when I saw this Chromebook, with an 8th generation Intel i5 processor with 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of internal storage, I was sold.
This is a premium Chromebook at a reasonable price when I purchased it in May 2020.
So my wife gets the Chromebook and absolutely falls in love with it. The screen is big and beautiful, and it is a nice touchscreen, so it is great for when you are wanting to use apps.
The keyboard is full sized, with well spaced keys that have a good feel. And it is back lit, so it is easy to use in low light conditions. Also, having a number pad on a laptop is really useful, especially if you are using this machine to do real work like editing spreadsheets (or playing old school games that use the NUM pad for controls).
And the machine is a beast performance-wise. Chromebooks generally are under powered machines that rely on the lightweight Chrome operating system to run well. Pair that same lightweight Chrome OS with a real machine having a decent processor and give it 8 GB memory and the machine is blazing fast and a pleasure to use.
The machine is clad in a metal shell and has a nice white top with a gray interior. The screen bezel is tight side to side, so the machine is not that wide or big, even though it has a 15.6" screen, which in my opinion is the smallest screen usable for serious work.
I also like that it uses a standard USB-C cable to charge. This makes it easy to carry just one charger/cable when you are traveling to charge your modern smartphone and your Chromebook. It also has another USB-C port, which you can use to plug in high speed devices or even output high def video to a screen.
The only cons I can think of are:
1. the screen is glossy, so you can see your reflection depending on your lighting, and also fingerprints.
2. the touchscreen didn't work at first, but a refresh fixed that problem.
3. the max volume on the internal speakers is not super loud - this may not be an issue for most.
4. the built-in webcam is not super high-def as far as I can tell, but it is still usable.
5. this Chromebook has fans that come on sometimes because it has a high end processor - not a big deal, but if you are used to completely silent Chromebooks, this one is different. But with that said, the fans come on very little and are silent for the most part.
6. the touch pad has a tactile grainy feel to it, which is nice, since it is responsive, but it is different than other machines that have a more glassy feel to them.
If you are serious about being productive and want to escape from Windows land, then a Chromebook like this might be a good option for you. Other than gaming, you can do pretty much anything you want on a Chromebook. And since this version of Chrome OS supports both Android apps and Linux applications, there is little that you won't be able to do on it, including playing all of those great games made for Android.
I would 100% recommend this Chromebook for students of all ages, including college students, and for working professionals who don't have to use proprietary programs for their work. If all you do is use Microsoft Office, Outlook, and the Internet, then this would be a relatively cheap and good performing machine for you.
The only quibble is the maximum speaker volume - it is not very loud. Volume is enough if you are using in a quiet room but if you are doing something with background noise it is difficult to hear dialogue. We use a bluetooth speaker to boost volume when needed.
Please don't waste your money! They keep your machine for repair only to find that something else is wrong with it when it's returned. So disappointed with this chromebook!! Won't charge, can't use touch screen effectively and the case manager was clueless. All they want to do is have you return the darn thing. I need this and I need it to work corectly!!!
