Customers find the planer easy to use and adjust. They mention it's a simple tool, but setup could be hard for a first time user. The brass knob and the frog adjustment screw make it easy to set the depth of cut.

"...I appreciate the brass knob and the frog adjustment screw, and the wide throat...." Read more

"...It needs a lot of tuning, took me three hours to get it to about 90%. I would still buy it again if given the chance though." Read more

"Great value, works out of the box, but could use sharpening" Read more

11 customers mention5 positive6 negative

Customers are mixed about the flatness of the planer. Some mention that the sole is nice and flat, while others say that the bottom was not flat and the sides are not square to the sole.

9 customers mention5 positive4 negative

Customers are mixed about the sharpness of the planer. Some mention that the blade took the sharpening very well, and has remained sharp longer than expected. However, others say that it took several hours to sharpen and was clearly never machine honed. Overall, the plane needs a lot of work to get into shape.

"...The blade actually took the sharpening very well. It took me another hour to get the face lapped and a sharp edge on blade...." Read more

"...The blade shows significant machining marks. This blade is clearly never machine hone. The chip breaker is even worse...." Read more

"...The sole was a lot better than the #4 I received; finer machining marks." Read more

"...So overall, the plane needed a lot of work. Definitely not ready out of the box but once you get it ready it works just like a #5 should." Read more

I've tuned up a few Stanley planes before and I use them on a regular basis, so I thought I knew what I was getting in to. I was wrong. The lateral adjustment lever is stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal and feels very cheap. The bottom part of the lever that slots into the iron sticks up too far and prevents the iron from resting against the frog.Stanley started using a plastic/resin material for the knobs and totes on their planes back in the 90s that kinda looked and felt like wood. I guess that was too expensive because the handles on this plane are made from hard ABS plastic--definitely not something you'd want to wrap your hands around for any length of time.I honestly expected some of these issues. Stanley's contractor grade planes aren't really planes so much as plane-shaped hobby kits that require some time and effort to tune up. I figured I'd have to lap the sole, level the frog, flatten and hone the iron, fuss with the lever, etc... maybe even make a new knob and tote. It's all part of the bargain when you don't want to spend $200 or more on a premium plane, but...The last straw for me was the chipbreaker/iron assembly. The screw that holds the chipbreaker to the iron was overtightened to the point that it deformed the chipbreaker around the screw hole and there's an obvious cam-out indentation in the screw head. Nothing I own could safely loosen this screw. To say I'm disappointed in Stanley for putting their name on this junk would be an understatement. Even the Chinese knock-offs at Harbor Freight aren't this poorly made.(In the first picture, this plane's deformed chipbreaker is to the right of a properly tightened chipbreaker from another plane. In the second picture you can see where the machine that tightened the screw (no human could have done this) cammed out of the screw's slot. The last picture should give you some idea of how cheap the lateral adjustment lever and handles are.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Arrived broken, and not in a useable state.
Reviewed in Canada on September 6, 2023
I was very excited for the arrival of this plane! I just finished restoring a 9 1/4” bench plane and was excited to have its big brother. However on the arrival I was throughly saddened. Not only was the handle broken at the base, but the hardware was all roughed up, as though someone have been cranking and slipping on a screw driver or impact driver when disassembling and reassembling.

Another minor issue is that the plane was in no way set up to use, the plane iron cap was set like a 1/2” back from the edge of the plane, the iron is duller then a politician, and the sole has such a rough finish I’m sure it’d probably mark any surface I attempted to use it on. That being said those are all fixable issues, I just can’t believe someone would even send this thing out broken, and in such an unusable state. Stanley used to be the number one name in hand planes, this thing is gonna take a lot of work before I can even use it.
