Customers have mixed opinions about the stability of the camera support. Some mention that it's stable when locked up tight, holds their lens and camera steady at different angles, and has a reasonably smooth function. However, others say that keeping the collar loose introduces wobble and excessive jiggle. The tilt bearing is somewhat stiff, and some customers report that the head wobbles a little.

Customers are mixed about the weight of the camera support. Some mention it's very heavy, sturdy, and worth the dollar spent, while others say it truly makes your rig feel weightless. The tripod handles all the weight nicely. However, some say that it'd be better not to carry it on long walks. The aluminum is heavier than carbon fiber, but this was not an issue for them.

"...I am sure it is heavier than carbon fiber...." Read more

"...Wish I would have known before. That said this is not overly heavy and my tripod handles all the weight nicely...." Read more

24 customers mention15 positive9 negative

Customers are mixed about the maneuverability of the camera support. For example some mention the balance was super and can maneuver with no problem at all, while others say the swing arm axle movement was not smooth enough. The joints jiggle and are not smooth when tilting. The pan knob and movement can be rough and gritty at times.

"...The head does not droop when the knob is loosened, the head rotates smoothly, and it is very stable...." Read more

"...However the swing arm axle movement was not smooth enough - it grabbed in places to the point that I could not pan vertically in a smooth manner..." Read more

"...Using the tilt indicator in the D7100, the gimbal moved flawlessly remaining parallel to the ground. The geometry of the gimbal is perfect...." Read more

"...Excellent construction and very smooth vertical and horizontal movement with easy adjustments...." Read more

32 customers mention4 positive28 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the alignment of the camera support. They mention that the camera sits a bit at an angle, the arm does not make a 90-degree angle between the platform and the camera, and the tilt knob sticks when tilting. The horizontal axis point is still not aligned with center of the lens. The mechanism is ok but they have a problem with the TILT mechanism. This gimbal head only provides horizontal panning and vertical tilt, and has a quality issue in which the mount is not properly centered inside of the bracket.

"...This gimbal head only provides horizontal panning and vertical tilt. Rotation must be provided by a lens collar...." Read more

"...that on the loose areas as soon as I lossened the knob any, the head did droop down...." Read more

"...issue was, I found that it is a quality issue in which the mount is not properly centered inside of the bracket...." Read more

Surprisingly good, Inexpensive Gimbal Head

Surprisingly good, Inexpensive Gimbal Head
The Movo GH700 is a surprisingly good, inexpensive gimbal head. I've been thinking about buying a gimbal head for a while, and while the Wimberly is at the top of my interest list, I thought it would be prudent to try a full gimbal head. After spending a few hours poking at the other $100 gimbal heads available on Amazon, I decided to try this one as it appeared to be the most like the Wimberly head. What it is:A complete photographic gimbal head for a tripod for use for use with larger, heavier telephoto lenses. It helps balance the lens/camera combination at the center of gravity, NOT at the no parallax point. What it is not:A precision pano head, a video head, or a 3 axis head. This gimbal head only provides horizontal panning and vertical tilt. Rotation must be provided by a lens collar. This is also not a Sidekick style arm for a ball-head; rather it is a complete tripod head and you must have a tripod with a 3/8-16 mounting stud to use it.The Good:For the price, it's surprisingly smooth and seemingly sturdy. I would be perfectly happy using it with anything from a 70-200 f2.8 up to a 300mm f2.8 or 400mm f4 lens. Note that my hesitation to use larger/heavier glass with it is because I have not used anything much bigger, rather than doubts in my initial assessment of the head. I do intend to rent a 600mm f4 to try on this head in the future. Most of the knobs are captive, and it gives every impression of being as close a clone of the Wimberly head as it can be for the price. The Bad:It is clearly not a Wimberly head. While the powder-coat on the J-arm appears to be very well applied, the rest of the metal is a high gloss anodized finish.Due to the length of the Arca-Swiss style clamp, you will probably not be able to adequately balance anything lighter than a 70-200mm f2.8 or the Canon 300mm F4 IS if you are using a 5D3 w/ battery grip or heavier camera. The one knob that is not captive controls pan friction. I discovered this after locking the head down to attach it to my tripod, then having the panning knob come off without loosening the pan. This was corrected by the liberal application of Permatex 24200 thread locker (blue Loctite would be acceptable as well). The Ugly:The high gloss finish has a significant blemish on the underside of the camera arm.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Gimbal!
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018
One words sums up my thoughts on the Movo GH700 Gimbal; AWESOME! The quality and workmanship is excellent, and with my Nikon D810 w/ power grip and Nikon 80-400mm lens attached, it moves as smooth as silk. This setup is primarily used for wildlife (mostly birds and deer) and flower photography, and stability is critical. Tracking BIF (Birds In Flight) is effortless, with none of the stiffness or gritty feel I've felt from other gimbals.

Getting this rig balanced on the GH700 was simple and reasonably quick; I dialed it in on my second adjustment attempt, and I made alignment marks on both the mounting plate that attaches to the tripod foot on the lens, and another mark on the baseplate the lens mounts to, to speed up remounting from one day to the next. The lens stays right where I put it, and most of the time I don't need to tighten either knob or lock it in place, unless it's windy.

I could have purchased the carbon-fiber version of this gimbal, but I wanted the extra weight for stability. My tripod has carbon-fiber legs and center post, and is light enough as it is. The carbon-fiber version of this gimbal (the GH800), I don't believe, would have provided the added weight I wanted, and believe me, this setup is ROCK SOLID! I also use a wireless shutter release, just to make sure that pressing the shutter does NOT induce any additional vibration or movement. Unless I inadvertently bump one of the tripod legs with my foot or knee, pictures come out tack sharp.

In case anyone is wondering what that 'thing' is between the tripod and the GH700, it's the rayfoto LP-68 Leveler, w/ three bubble levels. As I'm sure you can imagine, with the camera and lens mounted to the gimbal, adjusting the legs on the tripod could be a death (to the camera and lens) defying balancing act. One slip and CRUNCH! The leveler removes that risk and works like a champ.

Lastly, the price of the GH700 is EXTREMELY low, given the quality and smooth, precise functionality this gimbal provides. I would have gladly paid twice the cost, but luckily, I didn't need to. THANKS, Movo! You guys ROCK!
