I ordered this book the same day it became available. Last Friday. It got here Monday! Today is Tuesday and I finished it. I'm super sad to have finished the book. I even took my time reading it to understand it all perfectly lol! Gosh I love Lj shen! Her books are phenomenal. Angry God is the 3rd book in the All Saints series, which is a spinoff series about the children of the men in the 'Sinners of Saint'. I was super excited that LJ made her final book in this series of VAUGHN! I'll be honest. Everyone was right to rave uncontrollably about this book!! I love the intensity. The passion behind these characters. I wish there was more!!! I cant get enough. The ending made me want more. I definitely will think of this entire series for a long time to come. I cant get over how much I fell in love with the men. Knight, Penn, and Vaughn, even Hunter who gets his 5 mins of fame. Lj is that author to bring emotions from her pages to life! I'm too much in my feelings. I'll stop. Lol Read this series!!!! You will not regret it in a horrible way. Lol bittersweet to see it end.

I absolutely loved this book! In my opinion it's the best in the series. All of them are heartbreakingly brilliant. They've all made me sob and laugh out loud (in front of people wondering why I'm cracking up). I think I just identified personally more with Lenora and Vaughn is definitely more my style when it comes to leading men (scary, dangerous, full of angst). I read all of the time. I'm a giant nerd. I rarely review books because I worry I won't do them justice or I won't know what to say. But I've reviewed several of LJ's. The writing in this book just destroyed me. The inner dialogue of the main characters was fantastic. I've highlighted this book more than most. Some of the lines were just the best (chef's kiss). Seriously, like poetry. I can't say it enough. One of my favorite from each main character:

"I pushed the door open, hoping to find her working or reading or converting to a religion where she could only have sex with people named Vaughn Spencer."

"Heartbreak had a taste, and it exploded in my mouth every time I tried to smile."

Honestly, I could go on and on but if you haven't read it, do it...if you haven't read the earlier ones, do that...if you haven't read the rest of her work, be like me and keep reading!

I adore messed up characters. You know, the ones who are gritty, rude, and vulgar? I love them because there’s always a reason as to why they are the way that they are, a backstory that makes me believe in them, root for them, and cry for them. A character so on the outskirts of society that no one knows how to deal with them or knows what to think of them. They’re usually popular, for all the wrong reasons. See, people are attracted to the unknown, the mysterious, the individuals who are so screwed up that they becoming intriguing. They’re attracted to people like Vaughn Spencer and they don’t know why.

Obviously, not everybody is going to like him. He’s very cruel, but underneath he’s actually just a misunderstood person with a gentle heart, believe it or not. I love getting to the bottom of characters and seeing what they’re really made of and why they act the way that they do. That’s exactly why I love LJ Shen’s Sinners of Saints and All Saints High books: they all feature characters that are screwed up in one way or another.

I also adore Lenora. She doesn’t take crap from anybody. She stands up for herself despite all the bullying that is pushed her way, and she doesn’t let other people ruin her and her reputation. She always gives it back as good as she gets it, and I find that super admirable. She’s feisty but sweet at the same time. She’s dedicated, yet fierce. I love how she isn’t a carbon copy of Poppy. They may be sisters, but they’re complete opposites.

Lenora isn’t your typical girl in a romance novel. She’s bold, she’s direct, but she’s also a person with a gentle soul and a kind heart. She’s extremely loyal, even when other people don’t deserve her loyalty. Sometimes when I’m reading a book, I don’t really connect with the female character at all. I mean, most times I do, but sometimes it’s just hard to like them because of the way that they act or the things that they say. Some are too soft for my taste. I don’t want to read about a meek girl who refuses to stand up for herself. I want to be inspired by a strong girl who believes in herself despite all of the awful things that the world has thrown at her. Someone who doesn’t care what other people think. Someone who has had a rough life but makes the best out of it anyways. Lenora is that girl. She’s clever, smart, understanding and a beautiful person overall. She gives Vaughn a chance despite the fact that she really has no reason to do so.

Now let me get to the romance. It’s superrrr hot, but not in a typical romantic nature. No, the romance between Lenora and Vaughn is, well, different. I don’t think everybody will understand it, but that’s what makes it so special. Lenora and Vaughn start from a place of vulnerability, not one of trust. Their first encounter effects all of their future ones, for the best and worst reasons.

Angry God is the ultimate enemies to lovers story. I’ve read so many good enemies to lovers novels, but this one? This one outranks all of them. The way that Shen so flawlessly executes hatred turning in a passion and love…I just can’t even describe it. It’s magical, but still harsh harsh, unlike other stories that I’ve read. When Vaughn and Lenora get together, it’s a crazy, intense storm of emotions. Their love is passionate, but I’m not really talking about a typical kind of passion. It’s a passion fueled by hatred at first and then by respect for the other, despite the bad things that both of them do to each other. This isn’t a fluffy, easy-going tale of the prince and the princess getting together. No. It’s raw, it’s carnal, and it’s desperate at times. But that’s exactly why I love it.

It’s not necessary to have read the rest of the All Saints High books or the Sinners of Saints novels before reading Angry God, but I do think that it would help provide some context to the story and characters. Again, not necessary, but those books are SO good, so I’d recommend just reading them anyways because why the heck not. If you like Angry God, you’ll love her other books, guaranteed.

Oh, and lastly, I just have to say that I admire Vaughn’s parents so much. I loved them in “Vicious,” but I have an even greater respect for them now that I’ve seen just how far they will go to protect their messed up son. It’s truly beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

Clearly, I enjoyed this book. Well, isn’t that the understatement of the century? I devoured this book. Angry God is officially one of my new favorite books. Whew. I won’t ever forget it.

Just a heads up that’s there is abuse mentioned in this book. It’s not the first time that Shen has written a book with a character that has been abused. If you’ve read her book Bane, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Every book LJ Shen writes, I will automatically put on my TBR pile. They will all continuously be on my highly anticipated lists. She writes characters that may be hard to love, but they show a fraction of humanity to the ones that they love and care about the most. She knows how to write this ....holes well ;)

With Angry God I was so excited to read the book and couldn't wait to get more of (Daddy) Vicious. Would Vaughn measure up? Was his dark brooding artist an act or was this the man his dad had created?

Angry God was darker and took us down a road that had me not exactly liking Vaughn. To put it mildly, Vaughn was just a bully. The way he treated all those around him wasn't pleasant. His friends and the girls that worshipped him; no one was safe. He was beyond a bully. How could anyone like a boy like him? But when you see him with his mother and father, something just slightly breaks your heart open for this guy. But then you see how he acted at school. Something wasn't adding up. I couldn't believe that Lenora would harbor any good feelings about this boy. There was an electricity in the air whenever they were in the same room, but what was it? Was it the hate or was there something more between them?

"I don't want to like you, Lenora. I want to ruin you."

Now Lenora was a character that I understood more and actually connected with. I felt her uneasiness with her father and high school. High school is just a crapshoot and she came out of it alive. Barely, but she did it with her strength and attitude. I honestly don't know how she did it. She was a strong character that could stand toe to toe with Vaughn and Arabella and all the other "plastics" when no one else could. She was what held the story together for me. And the Spencers too. They may not have had a huge role, but what scenes they were in were my favorite. They are a fierce couple that love their family and would do anything for them. "Family is destiny."

Man, I have to say I wanted to LOVE Angry God, but I just wasn't there. It was not my favorite of Ms Shen's for a variety of reasons. I felt some of the issues lied in the timeline in the first half the book. It didn't flow seamlessly. There were parts of it that seemed like they had to go back in and add something to make sense. Then there was the problem of some characters that I think didn't need to be around in the storyline as much as they were (hello, Arabella...go away). The plot didn't need some of the added drama. Lenora and Vaughn had plenty to hold a complete book. Now that's not to say I didn't enjoy their story. It just took me longer to get into it and appreciate the characters. The parts at the art school were definitely more intriguing and better developed than the time in Todos Santos.

Overall, it was nice to finally get Vaughn's story and learn what made him so dark and angry. I enjoyed his HEA. I especially liked Lenora's character and the way she interacted with everyone whether they were her friends or not. She was just a character that was better developed than some. Their art was so integral to the story that I wish we got more of it. The characters and plot development were the strong suits in this book. Some of the timing was off, but for me, it was all about the characters. They held the book together. Whether you liked them or not, they definitely played their part and it was nice to see Vaughn find a light at the end of the tunnel. AND the added bonus of seeing Vicious being Vicious? Priceless.

"Before everything, there was you...You came before art. Before life. Definitely before hate."

I have loved the whole series so far and Vaughn’s story did not disappoint. Caught my attention from the first few pages. Loved the flash back and forward in this. Vaughn is such a complex character and learning his backstory was heartbreaking. His interactions with Gg were everything! Their chemistry was incredible- I loved their banter and their push pull. This story was emotional at times and I was rooting for them all the way to their HEA. The epilogue was amazing. One I’ll treasure

The impact this book has had on my life cannot be explained in words. When people ask me what my favorite romance book of all time is I always answer Angry God and there are so many reasons.

First of all, Vaughn and Lenora as individual characters. They are so strong, proud but unhappy at the same time. While reading, you can literally feel the tension and connection in the air. From the beginning their relationship was special. The "I hate everyone but you" trope has served so well in this.

“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥. 𝐌𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞. 𝐌𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. 𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐦.”

When I found out that this was a bully romance I was the happiest cause it's my favorite trope but I didn't expect this. The heartbeat, the smiles, the tears, the tension and the joy at the end.

Angry God is Vaughn’s story. A boy who had to grow up too fast. His mind is not like the other’s. He’s calculating, smart and most of all, he has the biggest heart.

I just wanted to hug him. Lenora is the best gift he could get. A broken boy with a broken girl who are complete together.

I loved Lenora's character and personality from the start. She is so badass and sweet at the same time. And she's also an obsessed girl, but how can we blame her? mean, c'mon, it's Vaughn Spencer we're talking about. Vicious's son. Their story could only be perfect.

I also loved Vaughn's connections with his mother, my sweet Emilia, both artists. The background of this book is so wonderful. The academy, the mystery, the art, paintings and sculptures.

In this book I understand that the author has a special bond with Vicious and Vaughn. You understand this from the fact that their books are perfect, the most beautiful and the most emotional of both series, SoS and ASH. They’re also my favorite books, couples and characters. I’ll never recover from them.

I recommend this book to every person who wants to read about pure, unconditional, heartbreaking and epic love. And also to those who need a second chance, just like Vaughn. 🖤

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster of a ride
Reviewed in Canada on March 7, 2020
I absolutely loved this book, I want to re-read it again. L I Shen has again written a fantastic story, I wanted to strangle Vaughn in the beginning and as the book continued, I thought he was an absolute bully. Vaughn, an only child comes from a very affluent family, he's lost his emotions, he's angry and manipulative. Girls are enthralled with him and treat him like a god because of his good looks, his family's wealth, power and status. Lenora's family lives in a Carlisle Castle in England where her father runs the castle as an art school for art students. Vaughn and Lenora meet when they are children and again when they are 12 & 13 at Carlisle where Lenora sees something she should not have and Vaughn threatens her to keep quiet. Lenora's dad moves her to California for her last year of high school where Vaughn lives and rules the school, where he is an absolute ass to Lenora. This story has so many ups and downs, like a rollercoaster, but well worth the read.
