The picture says it all. Compare a SATA drive alongside this product. The holes don't match up with any in a computer drive bay or caddy. Also, the case feels flimsy. ALSO, a small set of instructions would be a plus!

So I used this inside another bin assembly that held a Ultra slimm 9.5mm dvd drive on top and had a 3.5" opening beneath that would fit in the 5.25" single CD drive opening on my AKAI MPC 4000 se. I popped this beneath the DVD drive fit absolutely perfect and then I slapped a 1TB SATA HD inside it and done worked absolutely perfectly. An best thing is to remove HD simply open door and it ejects the HD just slightly so that when door is fully opened its hanging out about a half inch to just pick up and go and to connect HD back to in my case the MPC you simply lay the HD back in the slot slide in about 75% and as you close the door it has an internal mechanism that reattaches the HD to the system. So far now I've purchased about 6 or 7 of these for my own hardware and making kits to resell to other musicians not so tech savvy and just want it done so they start making beats.lol but 👍👍 up is what I give it for durable construction and how well it works.

Style: 2.5in SATA/SAS DriveSize: 3.5in SATA EnclosureVerified Purchase
This drive converter solves a big problem of mine. All my RAID arrays are outfitted with trayless 3.5" bays so incorporating 2.5" SSDs poses a major logistical problem. Even though a previous review reported poor fit, I bought one anyway just to test it out. Happily the SSDs fit perfectly into this converter, which in turn fit perfectly into the 3.5" bays. I've tested with about 2-dozen insertions into different bays, and the drive has fired up every single time. I've confirmed SATA III 6Gb/s operating speeds through the converter.

The big advantage of these converters is they allow air circulation across the SSD. All the trayless 3.5" bays have rear-mounted fans that draw air from front to back, and these converters are designed in such a way as to make good use of this cooling air. This a big relief because even though SSDs (and regular 2.5" drives) are low-power, they can still generate enough heat in an enclosed space to cause damage.

Out of curiosity, I tried fitting the converter into an internal 3.5" bay, and the holes were indeed a tad bit off (enough to have to break out a drill). Still more curious, I scrounged around and found 3 old cases with 3.5" floppy bays. Voila. The holes aligned perfectly and the fit was spot on. I guess the lesson here is if you're drill-challenged, find an old case with a 3.5" floppy bay.

I like these converters so much, I'm buying a bunch more.

Oh, one more thing, inserting and removing drives into the converter can get kind of sticky. It takes patience and gentle rocking motions.

In my music studio my main DAW computer has a ton of storage connected to it. After filling all of the six SATA ports provided on the motherboard, I needed to add external multi-drive enclosures. Most of the enclosures that work with USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 gbps) expect you to insert 3.5" disks on their caddies. While it is sometimes possible to put a 2.5" SSD on the caddy securely, most of the time it isn't. Sure there are inexpensive adapters that might work in some instances, but I have several enclosures where they won't because the attachment screws for the 2.5" drive are on the wrong surface of the drive making it so that alignment with the data and power ports in the enclosure is impossible. Then I found these StarTech enclosure adapters. What they do is that they encase your 2.5" drive inside a case that looks exactly like a 3.5" drive. In fact, if you didn't know what you were looking at you would think it was a normal HDD. When you insert the drive on an enclosure's caddy, it fits exactly like a 3.5" drive would. Also, inserting the 2.5" drive inside the adapter couldn't be simpler. It is tool-less and takes about 15 seconds to get the drive securely inside. This is a very innovative design. These things have been God-sends for me and I can't recommend them highly enough.

bought this because it was a toolless adapter that made the connectors of a 2.5" sata drive line up with a 3.5" setup(so many don't ensure the alignment so you can install 2.5" drives in a hot-swap 3.5" bay)
the system is a tad cheap in design as the door latch is very cheap and I am suprised I have not actually broken it yet, but for the parts that matter they did good, it slides in any 2.5" sata drive and makes it look like a plastic 3.5" sata drive in all dimensions that matter, it includes a "drive connected" light that uses the activity pin and is kinda useless(they didn't make it react to changes of that pin) but other than quirks like that it is perfect for putting 2.5" drives into a 3.5" hot-swap type tray

IMPORTANT!! note about Motherboard bios or Windows System recognizing the docking station with a SSD or HDD installed……. You may have to “Enable” the “Hot Swap” feature on your motherboard SATA channel in the motherboard bios BEFORE your Windows system will find or identify the drive as a hot plug device! The SSD or HDD drive will then appear in the same menu(s) as your USB drives and will need to be similarly “ejected”, just like a USB drive, when removed.

One suggestion I have is to “Disable” the hot swap feature on your Primary or system drive SATA channel (to avoid accidentally disconnecting your operating Windows drive and forcing a reboot or BSOD). Just saying….

Most modern motherboards appear to have SATA “Hot Swap” features available. However, as I’ve recently discovered, the default settings in the bios are generally set to “Disabled”. Because my entire purpose for this device is to sort, transfer, copy, consolidate and duplicate info from many separate drives and formats onto fewer media types, I needed the additional speed of a direct SATA channel communication.

CONS: The plastic construction "feels" flimsy and weak. Be careful opening and closing the converter door, the hinge is plastic and secured only with a thin metal screw. Not sure how long it will last but take care regardless!

I have some older PC's and most 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapters are cumbersome and ugly. The best one I have is a nice one by Silverstone and even that one is a bit of work before it can be used. This startech adapter basically makes any 2.5" SATA drive into a 3.5" drive, so it slides easily into a 3.5" slot. Good quality metallic feel. To a casual glance you might forget and think it's a standard 3.5" drive.

I wish they made a version that converts 2.5" sata drives to IDE. I could throw it into my older systems or my Playstation 2. It wouldn't even be that much work to repurpose the design. Think about it, Startech!

"Although mobile racks can enable a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drive to connect using a standard Serial ATA (SATA) connector, the hard drive controller must be SAS compatible to properly support SAS drives. SAS controllers can work with SAS and SATA drives, but most SAS drives will only work with a SAS controller."

    Semplice funzionale ottimo raid 1.
