But Descent 2nd Edition has recently taken my heart and it's way more in depth and very detailed than those previously mentioned games. It is certainly more challenging because you are pitted against a real player instead of the game's "Card AI." It also feels like more of an RPG than a Hack & Slash as experienced in the D&D AS games.
Now there are a TON of rules to keep track of & some rules are going to straight up confuse you. Fear not because as with any board game you can get clarification from boardgamegeek.com and on top of that FFG releases FAQ & Errata PDF's on their official webpage.
Overall, I would say this game is a good hybrid of a Roleplay Game and a Board Game.
Pros:
- More Quest/Campaign Oriented vs Hack & Slash
- Great Setting, Class System, Customization, Campaign System
- Expansions keep evolving the game (Adding New Classes, Heroes, Quests, Monsters, Mechanics)
- Official Website (Quest Vault) Allows you to play custom scenarios produced by FFG or other players (There's a PvP variant too)
Cons:
- Not necessarily easy to pick up
- Storage may be an issue
- Some phrases on the cards/quest book are hard to understand (But have been corrected by official/unofficial Errata & FAQ)
On a side note, before purchasing this game, I would recommend looking up tutorials on YouTube and googling storage/organization solutions for Descent. The more organized you are, the faster your play sessions become. I personally have a Plano Tackle Box, but I am not necessarily sure that is the most optimal method. I also printed out PDF's made by the BGG community to make life easier for my game group.
Thanks for reading and I hope you have fun! :)
A few months ago, one of my friends purchased the game Dungeon Command, and it was an instant favorite among us! Once again, we got to sit around a table for a few hours, talk smack (we LOVE to do that), laugh, drink some beers, and just have a good time. It felt great to feel a little bit of that camaraderie that helped make us best friends so many years ago. Although Dungeon Command remains a favorite among us, it made me realize just how much I missed those "good ole days" of running games for my friends, so I set out on a quest to find what would become our "crown jewel."
The first logical step (I thought) was to try one of the D&D board games (in this case, Wrath of Ashardalon). Now, I don't want to get into details about our experience, nor bash this game anymore than necessary, but it is suffice to say that it was an epic fail. Even with four pages of house rules, we just couldn't get this game to work for our play style. The search continued. Finally, out of desperation, I just did a search for "best dungeon-crawl board game," and this game Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition lit-up Google like a Christmas tree! Interesting...
After hours of reading reviews on Descent, and watching gameplay videos on YouTube (yep, I was determined to make sure I wasn't going to waste another $50+ on a game that wasn't for us), I couldn't order this game fast enough! I just KNEW this was the game we were looking for, and I was right! The first night we sat down to play, I could feel the skepticism around the table, but about halfway through the second quest, laughter and dice cursing (love dice cursing lol!) filled the room. My group and I couldn't (still can't) get enough of this game. It was an instant success; we found our jewel!
If any of you reading this review (well, more like an account than an actual review, but you get the picture haha) are looking for a game that meets the same criteria with a dynamic sense of camaraderie, look no further. This game is fun, strategic, exciting, easy to learn, and best of all, it allows you to talk smack! Love it!
It gets even better. You can play the regular board game method as laid out in the box's rules. In this form of game, one player assumes the role of the baddy called the Overloard to prevent platersfrom acheiving their mission goals. Or... You can download the App on either Android or Apple. In this game mode, the Overloard role is managed by the application. You can even play by yourself in the mode!
There's a large number of missions that come are included in the booklet. The missions are 100% replayable. There are also quality expansions that are available for purchase. These add layers to the rules, include extra map tiles for additional batte settings. Extra characters for players and of course extra monsters.
Honestly, there's too much to say about this game. If you enjoy table topboard games.... Don't miss this purchase. Cheers!

Having played Mansions of Madness which is based on the descent mechanic the one thing I do not like about this is the amount of terrain tiles that are non standard sizes and shapes. They don't stack nicely into piles like the other set does.

1) First of all it is relatively simple. Rules are clear, backed up by clever examples and figures. And you don't spend hours and your eye sight trying to figure out how far your archer can shoot or if the spell hits the goblin that is behind the corner etc. As a result you don' battle the board itself but the Overlord before you (or the heroes if you are the Overlord).
2) I am an old D&D player and Dungeon Master (DM) and I have played many games in my time.. This game brings you the hack&slash fun that you get from a D&D campaign but yet without the hassle and preparation demanded from the DM. It's easy and fast to set-up and the "campaign" is cleverly divided into sub quests that are usually over in 1-2 hours. Once its over you can "save" your current character, with all his/her loot, experience, skills etc and resume form where you had left of in the following week.. So just like a D&D campaign Descent 2.0 has the heroes grow over time, get better loot armor etc and get awesome skills that promise fire and destruction upon the hordes of the Overlord!
3) The Overlord, -the player that is running the show- is actually a player himself/herself! So unlike a D&D game the Overlord does not try to "facilitate" the game but actively seeks to destroy heroes with his monsters and his card deck of devious plots, fiendish traps, poisoned chests etc.. as a result, while this game is a cooperative adventure for heroes, it is exactly the opposite for the Overlord. The Overlord, just like the heroes gets experience and even more rewards for beating the heroes and grows in power and ability. There are many paths an Overlord can choose in building his/her "character".
4) It has immense replayability. Every quest has "open groups" meaning that the Overlord chooses which monster to field depending on the type terrain the heroes are at. So one game you can summon blood thirsty Barghests and in another mighty Shadow Dragons for the exact same quest... Also there are 8 heroes (right out of the box) and 8 different hero classes to choose from.. As if that was not enough, results of earlier quests influence what quest you play later on.. Believe me no single campaign will ever be the same.. Fantasy Flight Games has even an online quest generator where faithful of the community post their own quests or you can share your own..
5) Miniatures. Let's all pause here a minute... The moment that I knew I had to get my hands on this game is when I had watched Rodney Smith play Descent on Youtube with painted miniatures.. Did I not only get this game I also got into miniature painting as well. So now all of our heroes are already painted and monsters are 30% complete... The detail on these miniatures are astounding and it is pure bliss to paint them (I also added our current party along with some heroes and monsters that are already painted)..
"And the downside?" you ask.. Well I am yet to find out.. We are having incredible fun with our gaming group and we can never seem to get enough of Descent 2.0.. Oh, and yes, there is one downside actually, once you get into Descent you might as well forget your other games for a very long while :)
One other thing is that once you get into the world of Descent 2.0 be prepared to hoard everything FFG has to offer in terms of expansions, campaigns, figures etc.. You certainly don't have to, the base game is just enough to get you going and playing for hours on end.. but you will definitely want to! :)
