HANDY TIP: We purchase these slow cooker liners to cook all of our slow cooker meals. They are NOT plastic bags, they are made of nylon and safe to use on hot surfaces. They make clean up after meals a total cinch -- we rarely have to wash the pot after removing the bag full of food, just wash the lid. Moreover, the Pansaver bags are a ton less expensive and better quality than the Reynolds crockpot liners that you see at the store and come only 4 bags to a box and often have tears in them.
If you have questions or found my review helpful, please let me know!
I'm giving this product all five stars for being what it's advertised to be -- a good basic slow cooker with a travel-lock lid that prevents spills; a removable, easy-clean, lining; keep-warm, low, and high settings. Both the liner and the top are dishwasher safe.
This cooker also has larger-than-usual handles that enable the user to get a firm grip on the appliance. Good feature.
The four-quart size is ideal for many recipes and will easily hold about a 4-pound chicken and veggies or a small roast or chili/stew/etc. for the average family, couple, or single person.
I love the oval shape; it holds a chicken or roast much better than the round cookers. If you bake cakes directly in your slow cooker, not in cans, you may find the oval shape a bit odd, but I like the variation.
This is only one of four crock pots that I own. I have a Fagor 6-quart multi-functional and programmable cooker (pressure cooker, rice cooker, and slow cooker that also browns and has a delay-start function and auto shut off/keep warm function). I also own a 1.5-quart slow cooker and another 4-quart round crock pot slow cooker.
Rabbit trail: I've had the 4-quart round unit since my youngest (who is now 40) was a baby. It has sentimental value, so I'm going to cut off the cord and use it as a flower pot. Okay. Okay. So I'm an emotional sentimentalist.
I have found that this Hamilton Beach cooker gets hotter than my 40-year-old-plus round crock pot, but I understand that's the result of the FDA's requiring these appliances to have a higher minimum temperature to prevent food poisoning. Just bear that in mind when using it, especially if you're using the high setting.
Most importantly, Hamilton Beach slow cookers do NOT contain lead; therefore, they cannot leach lead into your food. That for me was a major factor.
BOTTOM LINE: Buy it!
The only things to keep an eye out for are:
The slow cooker doesn't have a timer, so you'll have to physically switch it off when it's done cooking. This means if you want it to cook while you're at work, make sure you get back home on time or your food will be overdone.
It's a bit larger of a slow cooker - make sure you're using the right time and amount of food when you cook. The last two recipes I prepped filled the slow cooker to about halfway. The stuff I was making ended up being done in around 1/2-2/3 of the time it called for in the recipe. Fortunately I noticed it, or else I'd have gotten to enjoy some nice chewy meat.
One tip I'd suggest is to use slow cooker liners, though. I bought some, and they make cleaning up super easy. After I make food, I can pour the remainder into tupperware since they're bags, chuck them in the trash, and give the inside of the cooker a quick rinse.
