I decided to get the roku after my dog annihilates all of my hdmi cords by ramming through them like an intense renaissance castle breach. It's nice to be able to turn on the TV to roku and not turn on tv, turn on laptop, sign into laptop, use scroll pad on laptop to select etc etc etc I'm sure you get my point.
I also wanted to find a streaming type stick that could house both prime and Netflix and I got even more of a bargain because it has way more apps like apple tv, CBC etc. (CBC is free too). Apple TV I am not an apple customer but I had just signed up because they're offering 3 months free right now and when you go to their website for three months free they give you an additional 7 days. That's almost 100 days of free apple tv!
Anyways I have the 4K nvidia shield pro in my bedroom and I can honestly say the roku makes me just as happy. Nvidia shield pro is over $300, something if you get the insurance and roku is like $40 something with insurance. Mind you nvidia shield though does have video games but the roku comes with so many impressive features also. I was able to change the Roku's theme to fish and the screen saver to swimming fish where as before it comes factory purple theme and retro purple Miami screensaver.
The remote is super convenient to use and comes with it's own batteries and hdmi cord.
Pros:
-it improved my projector tv quality greatly, if it was on my flatscreen in my bedroom it would no doubt be even better quality. Probably just as good as my nvidia shield
- its convenient, fast, easy to use
- customizable
- incredibly easy setup and comes with own batteries
- relevant apps. Most important: It houses Prime, Netflix, AND AppleTV!!!! On some streaming sticks and devices, you only get one or the other so this is fantastic.
- I was told if you downloaded a certain app on other devices you could mirror your devices to Roku as well
Cons:
-the hdmi cable is short so in order to have the little roku reciever block within sight for the remote and plugged into the back of the tv, I had to find an alternate hdmi cable with longer length to fit around the "tube" of my tv (probably not a problem for the general population)
- the power cord does not come with a block to power the roku so if you have an older tv like mine, it does not have a USB plug in the back of the tv so I had to use my cell phones charger block and will need to buy an alternative charger block as I dont have extras at the moment (again this is probably a problem the general population wont have)
Even if you want a new tv just buy one that is not a smart tv and get this roku streaming device, you'll save $100 or more so dollars and this thing is pretty customizable. My roommates tv has roku built in and I'm not even sure you can customize it like the roku streaming stick.
Overall this is a great tv streaming stick for an amazing price. I would highly recommend to absolutely anyone. It's a win in all categories.

Our main TV in our house is a little older, but works excellent, only not WIFI equipped. It's great to have the ability to see Netflix, Prime, Youtube, etc, etc now. Actually 100's of options.
Another plus with the Roku is that you will have the latest updates, whereas many smart TVs don't update, or charge for updates.
In our MH I can stream WIFI from my phone to watch what I want. Also there's the screen mirroring. so whatever you can look at on your phone, you can watch on your TV.
I missplaced a remote once and it was simple to download the Roku app and use my phone to control it. :)
Most TVs have a USB port that will power up the unit whenever you turn your TV on, so you don't need any extra power adapters. It's often marked as a "service" USB port, but will supply the 5 volts needed.
Ten years ago I bought the Roku 3. I used it daily with great success. It never failed me.
The past 6months or so it started to show its age. It was slow. Apps wouldn’t work properly.
It was a sad day that I had to retire it.
I bought the Roku Express the other day. As always it is still a great brand.
I paid the same price for the Express as I did for the Roku 3.
First what I don’t like about the Express. There isn’t a SD card slot. There isn’t an Ethernet connection, so you have to rely on WIFI. There isn’t a USB port to put an external drive to watch movies or shows. The HDMI cable is quite short. It works great, just you need to keep it close to the TV. Finally you need to have the USB adapter or plug in for the power.
What I do like about the Express. You can put it beside your TV and barely even see it. As with the Roku 3 it was very easy to set up and get running. The remote paired with the Express instantly, which was a pleasant surprise. No button to push to pair it. The Express is about the size of the palm of my hand. Nice and compact.
Needless to say all the issues I was having with my Roku 3 are not present with the Express.
Bottom line. I received a whole lot less for the same price. Yes ten years have passed. Yet it was worth every penny to me. I would highly recommend getting a Roku. They have many different styles, so you can find one that will suit your needs. Also Roku is still updating the Roku 3, it just can’t keep up anymore.
I am curious to see if this on will last as long.
