Silver Player: The Silver Foxes of Blue Ridge Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,108 ratings

Sometimes the woman you like the least is the person you need the most.

When opposite small-town business owners never see eye-to-eye, a personal development causes them to re-evaluate their bickering ways and negotiate a heart-to-heart.

Billy Harrington.

A young girl walks into a bar… I’d like to say that is the start of a bad joke, but it isn’t. It’s my life. Can you be called a baby-daddy if the secret baby shows up as a teen? I don’t know anything about raising a teenage daughter, let alone being a single dad. And the one person who can help me the most is the woman I like the least in this town. With her bookish ways and long silver hair, she bewitches me. I mean, she despises me.

Roxanne McAllister.

I’ve always been a runner-up in life. To my sister. To my niece. To the infuriating sexy silver fox pub owner across the street from my bookstore. Disregard his lush mouth, quick wit, and bad-boy reputation, because his name garners him privilege in this small town, and I don’t like him. But suddenly, he needs me more than anyone else and wants a truce. Is he able to play nice?

+ + +

Friendship with your nemesis is a gamble. Falling for the enemy is even worse a risk. Read how Billy and Roxanne go from enemies to understanding when opposites bond over a shared interest in this steamy, small-town, second chance at love over 40.

**The Harrington brothers are a spin-off from Second Chance, but don’t you worry, this later-in-life romance can be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

“When he loves, he loves. But when he hurts, he aches. I don’t want him to ache.”

With Giant’s story in Silver Brewer, L.B. Dunbar further captured my heart. If you’ve read any of my other reviews for her books with heroes and heroines over 40, then you know that I love what she’s doing. Dunbar makes it easy for the over 40 set to find themselves in her romances. Their troubles are my troubles. Well, sort of.

Billy Harrington piqued my curiosity in Silver Brewer. Playboy extraordinaire, I was waiting for him to meet his match. Although she seemed to foreshadow his match in Silver Brewer and Denton and Mati’s story, Second Chance, you can never be sure. However, true to form, Billy’s nemesis, Roxanne, is his match. And Dunbar’s Silver Player illustrates the perfection of the enemies-to-lovers trope in their coupling.

There is much to love about Silver Player.

Billy Harrington is more complicated than is suggested, on the surface. The complexity of his characterization offers us insight into the idea that “everything is never as it seems.” Through his journey towards love, Billy’s evolution is poignant. He reminds us that we can never really know a person based on our view of them. Instead, there is usually more below the surface, and it behooves us to learn a person more deeply.
Roxanne also represents that message too. In her case, it is Billy who makes some assumptions about her. However, it’s clear from the start that he likes her more than he allows anyone to believe (even himself). Roxanne is the perfect kind of heroine with this trope because she knows herself, and she finds contentment in it. She’s an incredibly strong heroine. With that strength, she’s the perfect challenger for Billy.
The chemistry between these two flies off the page. Yet, the difficulty of Dunbar’s Silver Player is their romantic journey. The moments of tension begin early through the hurtful words these two wield at each other. They are truly knives to your soul. For me, Roxanne’s hurt over her perception of Billy never choosing her as he does with other women gutted me. I felt her hurt deeply, just as I empathized with Billy’s feelings of inadequacy, especially related to his father. There is an emotional depth underpinning Billy and Roxanne’s chemistry that draws the reader into the story.
Roxanne’s niece and Billy’s daughter, Sadie, is also a special character in Silver Player. In many ways, she’s the amalgamation of Roxanne and Billy in that she’s created a facade of strength as a way to protect her heart from rejection, and she’s innately interested in being something more than what others expect of her. It was easy to notice her ability to work between her aunt and father. In her character, Dunbar crafts these highly emotional moments that bring a tear to your eye and a hurt to your heart, as Sadie attempts to grieve for her mother and seek acceptance from a father who struggles to understand fatherhood at first. There is an emotional depth to this Harrington series that I hadn’t felt in Dunbar’s Sexy Silver Foxes series. Between Billy and Giant’s stories, my appreciation for Dunbar’s storytelling grew because I connect emotionally with her characters.
As a criticism, I struggled with Billy at times. There is no secret that Billy undergoes the biggest transformation in this romance. This is most predominant in his emotional growth, but, to get there, the reader must contend with an emotional rollercoaster of sorts. There were times when I found Billy petty and insensitive to Sadie and Roxanne. There were also times when Roxanne, specifically at the end, created more drama than necessary in her processing of experience. I know this is commonplace to people, but it felt overdramatized, and I found myself frustrated with her character.

Overall, though, I loved Silver Player. Nothing makes this reader happier than the emotional and mental evolution of a hero. I think it represents the truth of humanity. We have to grow in order to survive, and Dunbar has written this beautifully appointed story about two people who are seemingly different but really much more alike than it seems. It’s a stark reminder to “never judge a book by its cover” because there is usually something much more in its pages than can be seen. If you are an L.B. Dunbar fan OR if you have never read her books, this book, in my opinion, is one of her bests, and you should read it. Now.

Bill is a divorced over forty and a player. His family never been able to forget or forgive him for the divorce. He plays the role of player well. Until Sadie comes to his pub and lets him know he is her father. Her mother died and she is living with her aunt. Roxanne has taken on the responsibility of her niece. She has always been around for her. There is much angst and heartache for all. This Silver Fox book was a different type of story line. He has many bumps in his life and even though his family loves him they show him no respect.

I really empathised with Billy in this story, he is a natural flirt but doesn't mostly mean anything by it, it's just how he is. He has so much pain hidden beneath the surface, feels he hasn't measured up to his 3 brothers or even his sister. School was hard, reading awkward, he taught himself to adapt enough to get by, his Paps understood him and helped hive him a means and interest to which he loved. I don't know if anyone in his family knew his struggle. He had another secret as well. His divorce has been used against him, his ex put on a pedestal. Then he gets a shock of a daughter. I did get Roxie as well, she hadn't been noticed in school because of her size, she had big insecurities as a result and because she had crushed on Billy that also became her anger in many ways. The threat of losing her niece compounded that, plus seeing women fawn over him. I felt most of the angst was instigated more by her and Billy reacted. This story is intense, there are powerful emotions at play on many different levels that twist and turn on any given day during the time frame. It also runs parallel to other books in this and another series so we do get glimpses of the stuff going on elsewhere, I actually enjoy that because sometimes it pulls together an event or conversation that was had in a previous read and actually helps make more sense from having both angles. The author does a great job of pulling that together, keeping the consistency right on the various levels. I was invested in the outcome of the characters and getting some justice for Billy, having people understand him better and see that even though he was labelled a player, in actual fact he wasn't, he was just misunderstood. Gripping, even thrilling at times but definitely a rollercoaster. Started 16/2/22 Finished 17/2/22

I loved reading Silver Player: The Silver Foxes of Blue Ridge # 2. All about William Harrington who is forty three years old owner of The Blue Ridge Microbrewery & Pub & Roxanne McAllister who is forty one years old owner of BookEnds and aunt to Sadie McAllister who is sixteen and my daughter. A young girl sits at the bar & is asking for Billy Harrington, and informs me she’s my daughter and then saunters out the door. I’m so stunned I can’t even get the words out!! But I’m wracking my brains trying to figure out who she is when the noise complaint nemesis shoves her way into my office, demanding to know what I said to Sadie!!! The author wrote a story about a young girl who trying to wrap her head around the jerk who is her biological father, and all the changes that she’s dealing with moving from Atlanta to Blue
Ridge. Read about Roxanne & Billy trying to navigate parenting a sixteen year old who’s missing her dead mom, moving to a strange town, and meeting her dad for the first time & meeting his entire family who basically owns the entire town!! This book is an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end, that will drag your emotions thru the spectrum of life!! You will laugh, cry and find extreme pleasure thru out it’s entirety! This is the second book in this series that you will not want to put down! I can not wait to read book three!! Give this series a shot, especially if you are over forty, because you will not believe how much fun these characters make being in a relationship seem!! Check it out, you will not be disappointed in the least!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Billy & Roxie (& Sadie)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 20, 2023
Liked this book. We learned more about Billy and why his marriage broke down & why he is such a player. He meets Sadie and is thrust into the role of fatherhood for a teenage daughter. And Roxie is her maternal aunt. Her and Billy have had an antagonistic relationship so far since she opened her book store near his pub. But secretly Roxie feels rejected because Billy doesn't seem choosy about who he sleeps with... but has never tried to sleep with Roxie.
One mystery remained at the end of the book.. who did Roxie see in the alley? Billy was adamant it wasn't him!!

Loved Sadie and her persona. Liked the fact she was her own person but had such a sweet and loving demeanour. So pleased they all had their HEA

L.B. Dunbar is one of my auto buys. I always know I will get a top class story and this one doesn't fail. I love how her characters are older, more relatable than perky 20 years olds. I am loving the Blue Ridge series and can't wait for more. I'm now going back to read her other novels again. Buy this one you won't regret this love story.
