I then used one for intended purpose - replaced pot for speed adjustment in my scrollsaw. The post of the original was plastic and broke off a couple years ago. (factory part is a 10k pot, same spec, same size/configuration, so this is "exact" replacement). This pot took solder easily - I've had trouble with other cheap components over the years not accepting solder so well - not the case here, took solder perfectly. The retaining nut cinched down nice and firm - no wiggle. Once installed, this pot adjust the speed smoothly, even BETTER than the original! Movement is smooth, no wiggle or snap-back. It's firm, but not at all hard hard, so very easy to adjust precisely to exactly desired level, and it holds there. No drift over time. VERY happy with this purchase, exceeded my expectations by far. Would buy again ... except with quant of 20, that'll probably last me rest of my life at the rate I mess with electronics these days!!
I found the knobs to be of surprisingly good quality -- actual metal (although they're light, maybe aluminum). No obvious machining imperfections and the trim is nice and straight. One warning is they are fairly short, so if you plan to mount these to an enclosure, you may want to think about how to extend the knob a bit (even with the nut and washer, still only clears the pot by a few millimeters). And the pot knob itself has some weight to it, so when you turn the knob on an enclosure it feels higher quality than a loose one.
One heads up for tinkerers, if you're trying to use these on a breadboard I found the pins were too thick to fit correctly (they fit vertically, but that's only because the breadboard slots are vertically oriented -- unfortunately the pot is not usable on a breadboard in this orientation). I just soldered some 22AWG solid core wire to the ends and plugged into the breadboard to mess with these before throwing them into an actual project.
Notes on Orientating the Pot:
If you're wanting to use this with a "traditional" orientation (pins down, "off" or full 10K resistance being to he left, with knob pointing to about 8 o'clock), you need to wire power to the right-most pin, ground to the left-most, and output to the middle pin. This should be obvious by measuring resistance of the pins, but there seem to be a lot of people just looking for someone to hold their hand when using this.
My commentary on "overheating" pots:
How you wire these matters. Some people seem to not understand how a potentiometer works, and while a pin diagram would be nice it's not necessary. You position the potentiometer at about 1/3 turn to one side and measure the resistance from connections A, B, and C for the left, middle, and right pins (or however you want) -- check A to B, B to C, and A to C. You would find that the sweep pin is the one that has opposite resistance to either of the other pins (e.g. 3k A to B and 7K B to C, then B is the sweep pin for a 10k pot). This is basic stuff, so it shouldn't need to be written on the box. You CANNOT use the middle/sweep pin for the power connection -- doing so will result in massive amounts of heat. I don't know why but it seems to be necessary to write it out.
Bottom line is that if you are getting an overheating potentiometer -- 99% chance is that you have it wired incorrectly. If a pot goes bad, it typically just results in an open circuit, not with massive heat.
I didn't expect precision performance for these items but they have been better than expected. I tested a couple by drilling a small hole in one knob, inserting an indicator, and then plotted the rotation vs. resistance. The pictures show one result but they were all about the same. The knobs are pretty nice and the stem rotates smoothly. As someone else has mentioned, the stems are not very long so they could be limited if inserting into a thick panel, but overall, twenty 10K linear pots with knobs, nut and washer for about 12 bucks seems pretty good.
