Delicious Recipes, Decieving Title
I just went G-Free 10 days ago & discovered I would have to completely re-learn how to bake. I like this book because it explains the different ingredients' uses & qualities in simple, easy to understand terms. The title however is decieving because the recipes are not sugar free -- rather, they are cane sugar free. The author instead uses things like agave, palm sugar & stevia to substitute. So far I have made the refried beans (which my husband & our dinner guests loved), and the carob chip cookies which are delicious & hit the spot, but don't mimic the texture of chocolate chip cookies.

Hearing that I had a gluten intolerance 3 months ago was one of the hardest experiences. My doctor sent me out the door with little help other than to "dont eat wheat". I felt lost and HUNGRY! I found Simply Sugar and Gluten Free through some searches on the internet, and have been so grateful to Amy for her amazing blog, I knew I needed this book!

I was surprised how thick the book is, and have loved the recipes I have tried so far. The only thing I would change is to add pictures of these dishes - I am a very visual person, and love to see pics of the food. BUT this book makes up for that in great recipes and info on how to get started. Gluten Free cooking is daunting, and even downright terrifying at first, especially learning about the dozens of different flours that can be quite expensive! This book makes it easy to understand, and she includes a recipe for an All-Purpose GF flour mix that is used in many recipes. There is a great section in the back of the book on each of the flours, sweeteners and various ingredients that is very helpful. I LOVE this book, and am excited to try each recipe.

I've been gluten free for about 6 years. I have many gluten free cookbooks, but I was hooked on the promise of simplicity for the recipes in this book. I like the idea of quick, healthy meals for my family that also meet my dietary limitations. Tonight, I tried the mac and cheese and meatloaf. Both were delicious, and the family liked them as well! The recipes are fairly simple, and turned out very tasty. My only "complaint" - which I hope really isn't seen as a complaint but more of a fact - is that the 20 minutes part of the title means preparation time; it does not include cook time. But regardless, I look forward to trying more of the recipes.

As many other reviewers have mentioned, the tips are extremely helpful. There are tips for how to buy dried fruit, storing chickpeas in the fridge so homemade hummus will already be chilled, making double batches and freezing, etc. I love the idea of baking a big batch of brown rice or making extra quinoa and freezing for later use. I have a very active family, and this kind of meal planning for the sake of convenience is huge for us.

The only real negative for me is that Ms. Green's flour mix contains bean flour. I have not been able to tolerate the taste of bean flour in most other recipes (or its effects on my tummy if I eat too much). I seem to have a keen sense for the taste, and have only found a few recipes containing bean flour that I like (one is Bette Hagman's zucchini bread with pineapple, the other is Erin McKenna's Apple Cinnamon Toasties, which are both super yummy!)The mac & cheese I made tonight called for the bean flour mix, but I used sweet rice flour instead, and the recipe still turned out great.

If you have a dairy sensitivity, there are quite a few recipes that call for milk, cream, or cheese of some sort. For those with nut allergies, there are also recipes calling for nuts. In both cases, there are often notes at the end suggesting substitutions to make the recipes dairy or nut free, which I think is awesome! Many recipes are labelled vegan, dairy free, or egg free, to help chefs isolate recipes that will work best for them.

For those who have been disappointed that this book does in fact contain some sugar (in the form of palm sugar from coconut), you may want too look up cookbooks for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, like Grain Free Gourmet or Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. South Beach also contains many, many great and healthy recipes. Just remember the healthiest recipes are going to be those that use whole foods, not artificial sweeteners, which some SB recipes call for.

The bottom line for SS & GF is that is is simple, easy to follow, has an overall healthy approach, and a great variety of recipes. I will be using it quite frequently!

I found this Simply Sugar and Gluten Free to be one best cook books out on the market! Why? First of all Amy Green has a fresh, simply approach that's personal and still professional. I love her detail in the recipes that need a little extra love. I found her shopping list ideas and tips to be very helpful. She explains that the the "bread" knows how many times it's been baked. Meaning don't give up, just try again. Start over! I took this approach not only in cooking but maintaining this challenging diet change. I have been Gluten free for 11years! I've had so much fun baking and loved eating all the sweet gluten free treats I made until....SUGAR became the next devil! I had to banish all refined sugars. This book has helped cope with yet another diet restriction. I have the BabyCakes book which I like. However, I find this SS& GF to be easier as a guide and has more tasty recipes to choose from. The book has NO pictures, so it is a surprise I reach for this book the most. Maybe I like the idea of making it somewhat my own creation. I take pictures, print them and paperclip them to the page. Sorta be came my very own cookbook/scrapbook! Thank you AMY! 5 stars!

For my daughter who must be gluten free this would be a good book. It's a life changer. It not only has great recipes that are gluten free, but tells you what you need to cook this way and how to stock your pantry. If you need to do this, it's a great book.

For me it's just too much information. I bought this book hoping to cook for my daughter during her two-week visit. I was overwhelmed.

I thought the "Simply Sugar" might be useful in my own case, but it's not long on advice here.

I think I'll just mail it to my daughter and mark it up as a gift to her.

I can't rave enough about this awesome book! Having been sugar-free and gluten-free for years, I consider myself a pretty good cook and very well-read cookbook reader. Of all the books I've read, all the recipes I've made, Amy's are some of the very best! I am very fortunate to be friends with the author herself and can also say that she is one of the nicest people I know. All of the delicious recipes in this book are written with personality, knowledge, and above all a passion for healthy food.

The Banana Oat Bars are phenomonal, as is the Slow-Cooker Chicken Cacciatore. I'm not much of a slow cooker fan, but Amy's recipes may be changing my tune. Big on flavor, easy on prep work...just the sort of thing every gal needs in her cookbook repitoire!

I highly recommend this book and encourage anyone--whether they have to eat gluten- and sugar-free or not--to get it on their shelf ASAP!

Author makes you visualize in which setting (mood) when making each recipe. Very much like the recipes. I will be looking for more books written by her.
