Updated review. Well I have used this for couple of months now and I must say it works great. I wanted to use it for awhile before updating my review. Controls are easy to reach and it delivers a steady amount of fertilizer. No more uneven laying down of product. I also love the size as opposed to the 100 lb. one. Pricey, yes. But I anticipate it will be the last one I will ever buy. I highly recommend this spreader. If you can find a site one store they sell the cover for $20.00
As long as you accept the fact that the calibration instructions are absurdly complex and beyond the capability of most people, this is a really nice spreader. The assembly wasn't too bad, and it feels very sturdy. My only complaint is that I wish the basket was a bit funnel-shaped because it stops dropping product when there's still a good amount left in the basket (just not over the holes). You can jostle it to help get more out, but once you start doing that, the spread is really uneven.
This is a much better spreader than the cheapie ones you find at Home Depot or Lowes. Spreads evenly. Well balanced and runs smoothly. I think that the small and rather anemic arm which breaks-up the particles at the bottom of the hopper could be greatly improved. It tends to bind-up when humidity causes "clumps" in the products, and the spreading will slow or stop. Needs to be a more robust and forceful system. Otherwise, all good.
Do not buy this spreader if you intend to assemble it. The instructions are pathetic; barely helpful. And be prepared to take a drive to the hardware store for missing parts. Mine was missing a C-clamp and a cotter pin. There will also be extra parts you'll have no idea what to do with, even after reviewing the spec diagrams. The final blow for me was trying to affix the right tire to the axle and discovering they drilled the hole in the axle in the wrong place. Had to get my drill out and drill it myself in the proper spot . I have no idea if this thing will work well in the yard: still in my shop putting together.
Lesco is the Rolls-Royce of broadcast spreaders. I have 3/4 of an acre to cover and the cheap plastic wheel spreaders are too physically demanding and break down easily. The Lesco is really a professional tool meant to last. So if the price doesn't scare you away the Lesco will last you a lifetime no matter how long you live.
Update: Just used my spreader for the first time. It has exceeded all my expectations. It pushes easily. The Lesco is well balance with 40lbs of fertilizer in the hopper I had no fatigue.
Relatively easy to assemble, super sturdy, and easy to use. Unable to purchase this quality in a local hardware store, and it’s nice to know this one will last for many years to come.
The spreader was well packaged and arrived when promised. Like others noted, the assembly instructions need improvement, particularly when attaching the wheels (one side uses 2-washers, the other 3-washers). When assembled it comes together solidly. This replaced my old Scotts Pro-Edgeguard (gear assembly wore out), as it takes on quite a bit of product weight in the hopper. Calibration instructions for product measurement are pretty involved and there is a translation chart on the web (compares to other spreaders). What worked for me, was to load my products (seed and fertilizer) and vary the settings for a distribution rate that looked reasonable. This looks like it will last a long time.
