Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place during the Second Europan War and follows Squad E, a group of soldiers fighting for their country's freedom. The game has an engaging story with lovable characters that you will care about throughout the journey.
The gameplay is a mix of strategy and RPG elements. You will control Squad E as they battle enemies in a turn-based combat system. The maps are large and varied, with different objectives to complete, making each mission unique and challenging. The game also has a training system where you can improve your characters' skills and equipment.
One of the best things about Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the graphics. The game has a beautiful watercolor art style that gives it a unique look. The character designs are fantastic, and the animations are smooth and fluid. The music is also top-notch and fits perfectly with the game's setting.
Overall, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a must-play game for strategy and RPG fans. The Launch Edition is a great value and includes a stunning art book that showcases the game's art style. Get ready for an epic journey that will have you on the edge of your seat!
Great strategy, and a good story (although sitting through all the talking gets a bit tedious...they could have gone a little lighter on some of the dialogue between battles). I am absolutely loving this game and have put many hours into it so far, and I'm only on chapter 13 (I guess there are 18 chapters + post game stuff), so you are getting great bang for your buck as well.
Highly recommended to turned-based strategy fans, and fans of Japanese animation & storytelling.
It's a neat mix of fps and tactical rpg, the characters are likeable, and the gameplay is an interesting challenge except for a single problem.
You won't win missions the first time you play them.
This doesn't manifest until you're a few hours into the game, but by your sixth or so mission, you'll start running into situations where you had to know the enemy's unit placement and scripted events before you started. If you didn't, I'm sorry. You'll get partway in, abruptly discover you made the wrong choices based on no information, and lose.
A mortar from a unit you had no reason to know existed will come out of the sky and one-shot your lead character, or enemies will spawn and immediately get a turn as part of a scripted event, and they'll just walk through your army three-tapping people.
VC 4 is *extremely* attacker-friendly. Unless the defender has been buffed, and as long as the attacker doesn't miss, if they're using the right weapon, they'll kill. Doubling down on this, turns are a string of actions taken by a single side. So you can spam the same character a bunch of times (with fewer movement points each time) and fire on things until your ammo and actions run out.
The AI is frankly less abusive with this than they could be, but that doesn't matter too much when you're running by a patch of grass for the first time and an enemy unit materializes out of it and melts you instantly, or when a group of tanks and soldiers spawns, uses a command ability you had no reason to believe existed, and marches their army through a wall of fire to flank and one-shot half your named soldiers.
On top of this, you'll sort of need to research some of the game mechanics to figure out how and why they're behaving the way they do. For example, when you go to shoot, the game has you manually aim your shot and gives you bonus damage (that you need if you want to kill) for hitting critical locations. Unknown to you, it *also* rolls a die to see if your shot goes where you put it or scatters. And its calculation of how many shots are needed to kill (which it displays instead of showing your miss chance) is sometimes wrong. And none of this takes into account obstacles in the environment when sometimes intercept your shots with their bounding boxes in a way that doesn't make a whole lot of sense visually.
Basically, play with a guide. It'll ruin the challenge and immersion, but you won't have to constantly repeat missions. VC 4's a good game, but playing it correctly requires you to know what's going to happen on each story map before you encounter it.
