The newer ones are interchangeable (base and adapter) however, my buddy has the same adaptor that he bought a couple of years ago and my adaptor won't slide onto that base.
The system does not lock down, so you can easily pull off your binos. This can be a nice feature if you're using a harness and you don't want to take the straps off when you walk away from your tripod. The negative thing would be that they could fall off, I suppose, but you'd have to knock them off since the adaptor base is pretty deep.
Another thing to think about is that since the base isn't permantly attached to the adaptor, it's a pain to switch between Binos and spotting scope. What you have to do is take off the binos (simple) and the take off the quick detach plate of your tripod that has the base off the adaptor attached to it. I lost my QD plate and base because I just put it on the ground when switching between the two, and forgot about it when I moved (4 mile hike from camp to glassing location when I realized I lost it, not worth the hike). Then the whole system was useless to me for the rest of the hunt.
I think the best part of this system is how short the adaptor is. It won't poke you in the chest. You don't even realize it's there. Even on 42mm tubes it's not really a problem. It's also pretty lightweight. Just don't lose your QD plate and base.
This definitely improved stability and image resolution.
