SPECS:
This motherboard is a brand-new board using the LGA1151 socket, great for new 9 series Intel processors. The other specs are held in the page above, and I don’t feel like copying them here. It also has built in Ethernet, WiFi, and Bluetooth, all of which work flawlessly. Don’t buy a separate card if you get this motherboard. On-board communication between parts is fast enough that it will never be the bottleneck in your system.
BUILD QUALITY:
This motherboard is excellently built, with a nice, solid feel to it. I’ve handled boards before that feel like they’ll break in your hands, but this one felt solid and build well. There are of course some plastic pieces, but those felt nice as well, and looked good. The PCIe ports were reinforced and will hold even heavy graphics cards.
INSTALLATION:
Motherboards are never easy to install- if you’re looking for one here, you obviously understand that. This wasn’t worse than any I’ve done before, and it has nine holes to allow you to mount it solidly to the interior of your case. There is also a nice CD that comes along with it to install drivers and other utilities. This installer crashed three times before I could get everything and contains a bit of bloatware (that you can opt out of), but it installs drivers that Windows will install by itself and utilities that only gamers will want.
AESTHETICS:
This motherboard looks pretty nice. It’s black, but you can see that from the picture. One thing I didn’t realize until I plugged it in is that it has some LEDs on the bottom of it! They’re not in the most useful place, being on the back side of the board, but if you have a clear case, I’m sure it’s fine. This motherboard also supports RGB on many components and has a nice control panel for such that can be installed.
BIOS:
MSI put a lot of effort into their BIOS to make it look futuristic and appeal to gamers. You probably won’t need to use it much unless you’re into overclocking (although this can be done with their DragonCenter utility), but if you do have to, it looks pretty good, has tons more options that you’ll ever need, and is remarkably stable.
I/O
This motherboard has lots of ports out the back, many of which you won’t need because they’re on the back and supports lots of stuff for the front. The front maxes out at eight active USB ports, depending on the internal connectors.
MISCELLANEOUS:
I’ve had problems with motherboards not knowing how to wake up properly from sleep. This motherboard does not have that problem. I appreciate that. This board supports water cooling. Also, the dragons are cool.
All in all, this is an excellent motherboard for anyone who needs a 9 series Intel CPU and excellent functionality.
I just built a new rig and used this mother board. Since it still doesn't have any reviews to let you know what you're getting into here you go.
Functionally the Edge AC is the same as the Pro Carbon AC. It doesn't have the heat sink over the lower M.2 or as much RGB, but everything else is exactly the same. The board runs very well and cool. I have been stress testing the cpu without an overclock and keeping an eye on the component temps. With good airflow no component got over 50 C with the only exception being the CPU of course. The BIOS makes sense and is easy to navigate in either mode. You don't lack for headers and ports of all types. At the top of the RAM slots White LEDs tell you if your RAM is recognized, and a Red LED just to the right of those lets you know at a glance if you have XMP active. There is a slight amount of RGB on the right Edge of the board, but it's so subdued you don't notice unless you're looking for it. The build quality of the board is very good and it should last as long as you need it to. This is a great motherboard and I will be starting overclock testing soon and will update this review if I find anything new to report.
To conclude, buy this board if you don't care about flash and just want all the preformance and function of the Pro Carbon at $30 - $40 less price.
UPDATE: I have been running a very stable 4.9 Ghz OC on my 8700k for the last couple weeks. Board temps accually dropped to 40 C when I stopped using the auto core enhancement and started to do manual overclocking. This is because the MSI version of MCE was taking the voltage upto 1.41v (which is on the very high end of safe voltage for most CPU's and can shorten it's lifespan) and my settings have it down to 1.3v. If you have or are thinking of buying this board, and have a K series chip to match, spend the time to learn and run your own manual overclock rather than let the board do it. You can get better performance, possibly improve longevity, and lower power usage with just a few hours spent doing the research and adjusting settings.
Top reviews from other countries
Firstly, the SATA connections (6 in total) are disabled in pairs when you install each M2 drive (max of 2 drives) directly onto the motherboard. I have both M2 drives installed so sacrificed 4 SATA connections. Please note this before you invest heavily in drives. This is not the end of the world for me as I will put the slow drives in a caddy and run through USB, shame those spots are not empty in the case though. Luckily I went for 1TB M2 drives for video capture and conversion/streaming. I will just offload to external storage when complete.
Second, the dragon suite software used to control the RGB lights and other things in the case does not agree with anti-cheat software in some online games. I was getting kicked from Fortnite for example until I uninstalled. As a result you need to install BIOS and Audio drivers separate, as these don't cause a problems natively. I hope they sort this soon so I can link it to my other Razer RGB devices. I can still use the Realtek software to control ports and features.
That's about it for the bad. The thing looks brilliant. Lovely black board with little reflective details here and there. Spacing seems fine for access to memory and ports. Plenty of space around the CPU for a large CPU cooler. instruction book that comes with it is helpful. All in all I'd recommend, maybe check online to see if the software issue is solved by now if this is a showstopper for you, but that will probably be for all of the boards in this brand. and make sure you plan your internal SATA drive layout if your using the M2 connectors.
The BIOS is not particularly intuitive and is somewhat clunky, but functional.
My only complaint is that I am having some difficulty getting Dragon Center to function to update the drivers and BIOS. I expect I'll get it resolved, I just haven't managed it yet.
UPDATE: As expected, I was able to resolve the connectivity issue and update the drivers and Dragon Center. The Mystic Light app works very well, with a nearly overwhelming number of lighting options. Overall, I am very satisfied with the board. Features and expandibility are excellent.
