Using it is as straightforward as it gets: just twist it into your citrus fruit and watch the juice flow. The handle is comfortable, making it easy to grip and twist without feeling like you’re about to sprain your wrist. It's a game-changer for anyone who loves fresh juice but hates the hassle (and the wrist strain) that comes with traditional juicers. The only hiccup? You'll need a strainer handy to catch those pesky pits. But honestly, it's a small price to pay for fresh juice without the fuss.
Overall, the OXO Good Grips Wooden Citrus Reamer is a kitchen essential for citrus lovers. It’s simple, effective, and makes juicing an easy part of your kitchen routine. Whether you’re a cocktail aficionado looking to add fresh juice into your mixology repertoire or someone who just loves a good glass of lemonade, this tool is for you. Just remember to have a strainer ready, and you’re all set for a fresher, zestier lifestyle.
From appearances they all appear to be the same. The diameter of the reaming end is so small, and its “pointiness” so long and narrow, that it only fully fits into key limes. Any other citrus and you have to maneuver it around a lot in the pulp, which is hard on the hands and not the best way to extract all the juice. I find myself squeezing the remainder of the fruits every time, and after one or two fruits my hands are sore. Also, the point at the tip is needlessly sharp and actually a bit of a hazard for poke-through on thin skinned fruits. That’s easily enough fixed by gently rubbing it against fine sand paper. Or banging it angrily when your significant other is being annoying (“percussive maintenance” — the act of hitting something when it’s stopped working).
That said, here’s why I like this one better than the rest:
1. The ribs are deeper than most and their edges are sharper. That makes it a beast on the pulp it gets to.
2. Because the handle is fatter, you have a better ability to apply the rotation force (torque, for the nerds) necessary. A slimmer handle is even more fatiguing on the hands. I have an injury to my hands that makes it most important to me but the principle applies for anyone.
3. The wood is nicely finished — smoothly sanded. Which makes it less likely to pick up fine pulp debris shards and easier to clean.
4. It may be a simple device but this one is really sturdy. I won’t ever need to buy another, unless my irritation has me hammering with it, but that would be on me, not Oxo (see “percussive maintenance above — it works on most things ...or makes me feel better, at least.).
All around a pretty nice gadget, though I wish they’d make it with a fatter, less pointy reamer.
Oh, be sure to follow the directions that come with it and oil it well with a neutral cooking oil. I found I needed to reapply two more times, as it wicks in a bit. Still, though, it doesn’t feel greasy.
