Product Description
ANCHORSEAL 2 is a hybrid of plant-based polymers and wax that protects the ends of green logs and lumber from end checking and splitting. AS2 controls the rate of moisture loss during air drying for hardwood, exotic hardwood decking and softwood. It is a high-performance, economical choice for sealing green wood and fresh cut lumber. ANCHORSEAL 2 is best-in-class for the protection of deck end cuts for exotic hardwood species. When carefully applied to the freshly cut ends of tropical hardwoods, such as ipe, Brazilian cherry, mahogany, teak, cumaru & tigerwood, AS2 prevents up to 90% of end checking, protecting your investment and extending the life of the deck. It is also a preferred end grain sealer of the woodworking industry for wood bowls, turning blanks, cookies & live-edge wood slabs.
Features:
Prevents up to 90% of end checks and drying splits on logs and freshly cut lumber • Hybrid formula combines wax with natural plant-based polymers • Can be applied to all species of hardwood or softwood
• Helps prevent blue stain and sapstain caused by damaging fungi • Water based, non-toxic formula, soap & water clean-up • Available in clear or more than 35 colors • Winterized formulas available
Coverage: 100 sq. ft./gallon, depending on application method and wood species.
Surface Preparation
- All areas to be coated should be clear of dirt and debris
Application
- Apply ANCHORSEAL 2 using a brush, roller or sprayer until it begins to drip slightly
- For optimal coverage, use a gas engine, electric, air operated or backpack sprayer from U·C Coatings
- If using spray equipment other than those sold by U·C Coatings, use 0.21”/0.55 mm tip or larger
- Logs larger than 24”/60 cm in diameter will require a heavier coating, or two coats must be applied within a 15 minute period
- If applying to the cut ends of deck boards: apply ANCHORSEAL 2 carefully with a thin brush or sponge applicator. To avoid potential staining, do not allow ANCHORSEAL 2 to get on the face of the boards.
- If you need a deck end cut sealer that penetrates below the surface of wood that can be painted or stained over, we recommend SEAL ENDS ONCE (also made by U-C Coatings)
Cleanup & Storage
- Clean application equipment using hot soapy water
- Store unused ANCHORSEAL 2 above 50°F/10°C to prevent freezing. Winterized formulas will protect against freeze damage
ANCHORSEAL 2 - The leading log & lumber end grain sealer since 2006. Also widely used for sealing wood bowls, cutting boards, turning blanks and protecting the ends of wood decks.

Most of the reviews I read for this product indicate use for green wood, but I like to use it as further protection for woods that are already "stable".
I have both kiln-dried and air-dried woods, and many of them are exotics which represent a significant monetary investment.
Dealing with seasonal changes can tax any wood product, and no matter how well I try to control climate in the shop, relative humidity swings of 20% or even greater are not uncommon during drastic weather changes.
Sometimes Mother Nature moves at a faster rate than the climate controls can keep up. It can especially be bad if the big doors are kept open while moving items in/out.
Had a couple of times where it took a few days to get back where I wanted, and I'm sure it's an indicator that my climate controls are not suitably-sized for my area. Still, my present equipment serves me well enough, and I certainly don't wish to invest in construction of a lab environment.
So even with "kiln-dried" wood, the stock is still at risk if the storage environment is not kept reasonably stable. Of course, different species of wood absorb/lose moisture at different rates than others, but I don't like taking chances with ANY of it.
To me, the purpose of coating is not to completely prevent moisture exchange, but rather to retard it. (Fast rates of exchange are what have given me the most problems.)
Once the moisture content of the wood is at the level I want, I like to keep it there as much as possible during fluctuations in the atmosphere. (On some pieces, I'll even coat the entire piece, not just the endgrain.)
In the past I have used leftover paint, polyurethane, or dipped in hot wax to protect end grain. All worked fine, but presented compromises.
Somehow it just doesn't feel right taking an expensive piece of ebony, rosewood, etc. and putting paint on it, wondering if all paint can be removed without excessive wood waste.
The hot wax works great and removes easily with scraping, but application is inconvenient, especially if coating a large piece.
This Anchorseal goes on very easily, doesn't stain the wood, and cleans up easily.
For me, it is a better alternative than the coatings I previously used.
Concerning performance, only time will tell, but I suspect it performs every bit as well as my previous methods.
When you make a rough cut, often the waste is allowed to fall away, occasionally breaking off a bit of the end. That's what's easy to miss when sealing the ends. I try to make sure to inspect each board and paint appropriately. I use a regular cheap brush and just wash it in soap and water right after. Would latex paint be as good as this? Probably, but I like how this is specific for it's job. Because the 4 sides you might paint a tiny bit are not end grain they won't absorb the sealer very much. Use very sparingly on the sides. Just a little 1/8" thick is plenty. It will dry to an 1/8" paste. Because it can stain, be careful putting that board down on other wood. Latex paint would have the advantage here.
When I applied this to green Redwood, it did a fantastic job at stopping numerous radial checks I found appearing in the untreated cuts.
