The Kreg Pocket-hole Jig changed this. When making fast box and casework, using two of these clamps to hold each 90-degree pocket-hole joint makes construction easy. It does take a little bit of practice to place the clamp: sight down the clamping face at a mark to minimize paralax, clamp lightly, adjust position by tapping, clamp firmly.
These simple clamps are great because they are small and stay out of the way, allowing plenty of space to install the screws. They are vastly easier to place than other corner clamps like the Bessey WS3 or the Rockler right-angle clamping system. They help produce square joints. They don't mar the wood.
It is important to understand that while they hold a joint square, they don't provide pressure on the glue line. They will hold some pressure on the glue line if the pressure is placed by separate bar clamps and then this clamp is tightened.
The shortcomings are tied to the strengths. The clamp is light and small, but that means it isn't vastly strong. I use two clamps for each joint if there is room. The body of the clamp is a casting. Be careful if you are joining really long heavy boards because the weight of boards, coupled with the extreme leverage, can break the body of the clamp. (For example, 6-foot long 2 by 8 boards.)
The screw is a standard thread like a 1/4-inch diameter bolt. This makes it harder to tighten and loosen the clamp when it is tight. A tiny pit of lubricant on the screw can help but also be messy. An acme thread would be great, but the clamp would be larger and heavier. The finger lever for tightening the screw is also light and can be bent. You are over-tightening if you bend the lever, but it can be straightened. Remember, you are using the clamps as extra pairs of reliable hands, not to provide pressure on a glue joint. Just tighten it enough to hold while placing and screwing the joint.
I think the Adjustable Clamp Company could fine tune this design to make the perfect 90-degree packet-hole clamp by removing the miter slot, strategically strengthening the clamp at the corner in the base, and changing the screw treads and finger levers. However, I am not certain I would like the result better than I like this clamp.
Update:
I read the other reviews after I wrote this and realize it is important for the buyer to know what this is before they buy it. These are light-duty clamps designed to help make mitered picture frames. The moldings used in picture frames are generally light and small, and heavy clamps will easily destroy the wood. These have a light, wide touch. They are like extra hands. They are very different from other woodworking clamps. They are not meant to clamp glue joints by themselves.
Also, making mitered rectangular frames seems like the simplest of tasks--until you have done one. Then it will seem pretty hard until you have done ten or more and learned the tricks. Here are some of those:
To make a rectangular frame it is best to have 4 of these clamps. They won't work for frames that don't have square corners. With the frame clamped up in four of these, before any glue or fasteners are used, check that the miters are all flush. If they are not, check that the moldings are square with each other.
For many molding patterns, it is hard to clamp the moldings square. Usually, the molding flares up at a "spring angle" and no amount of fiddling will make these clamps work. However, if you measure the spring angle of the molding you can make little triangular blocks and use heavy-duty double-stick carpet tape to fasten them to the back of the molding. You will need 8 identical blocks. This will make the molding sit stably in the clamp and also ease cutting the miters. Just use alcohol (not rubbing type) to remove the tape after the frame is assembled.
The second trick is that miter saws are rarely perfect. These clamps have a "saw relief slot" molded into them. After the frame is clamped, a back-saw (or other cross-cut saw--I like using a gents saw) with a good tooth set can be used to rake through the miter, shaving just a tiny amount from each side of the miter joint. The miter will guide the saw. After sawing, reposition the molding in the clamp and see if the joint is even. If it isn't, try re-sawing again. Note, however, that the other joints may need to be adjusted, too.
Once the miters are acceptable, glue and pin or spline each joint. If you are not pinning, consider using a band clamp to tighten the joints to strengthen them as the glue sets. (A pin is basically a fine nail placed well down on the back of the frame to make it invisible.)
And one last trick. You might be tempted to make a bunch of identical frames, say for a standard size of photo. In this case, build a permanent frame clamping jig out of a very flat piece of plywood or MDF that is at least 3/4 inch thick and about 2 inches wider and taller than the finished size of the mat or picture. Build a frame and get the corners in perfect alignment. Place the frame with clamps on the plywood and screw the clamps in place with 2 screws per clamp. Screw holes are conveniently provided in the clamp body. You will need to purchase 4 clamps for each jig as the clamps do not stay in alignment when moved.
I tried clamping with 1 or 2 DeWalt or Irwing clamps on opposing sides, but with picture frames, this is not a balanced glue job. The frame will set out of alignment if you do not use 4 clamps at the same time. This set was priced very reasonably, and worked well at doing its job. I have recommended this to my son who does hobby woodwork, and to my neighbor for DIY projects around the house.
The sellers are a small family business, and work hard on good fulfillment, so happy to give them my business and support small family business instead of huge corporations. Heartily recommend!
These have a more polished look and feel than most of the low cost competitors. For example, the ends the screw toggle are rounded off instead of hammered flat to lock them in place. They do still have a small rivet that takes all of the clamping force of the screw which is likely the weak point in the design. I haven't had any problems with it, but I am conscious of putting too much force on it with the screw.
The action of the screw leave a little to be desired. It takes a lot of turns to re-position the bracket. Since it isn't built for strength, they could have used a coarser thread that allows the bracket to move further with less turns. That will give you less torque capability, but given that these are for lightweight jobs, that is probably a good thing.
Pros:
Better fit and finish than competitor clamps
Good price at the time I got it, anyway
Good for small, lightweight projects
Cons:
Slow to adjust
