From the Author
Over the years, I complained to doctors about heavy fatigue, muscle pain and leg cramps, migraines, heavy periods, acne, forgetfulness, cold intolerance, weight fluctuations, depression, anxiety, eczema, a hoarse voice, a puffy face, thin eyebrows, struggling to exercise and many more issues.
When initial thyroid medication didn't seem to help, I started down a path of researching what else I could do to regain my health and my life. After all, so many areas of my life had been affected by this invisible illness.
Now that I am finally living well again and have my thyroid disease under control, I wanted to share everything I have learnt with others who need to hear this information.
Followers of my work had asked for a book for a few years, so I was really glad to finally deliver everything they needed in one, handy-sized book that they could keep in their bag or on the nightstand.
"Be Your Own Thyroid Advocate" is the book I wish I had at diagnosis. I read many 'thyroid books' when I was newly diagnosed and desperately searching for the reason why I didn't feel any better on thyroid medication, but they were difficult to absorb and very technical. With my thyroid brain fog and fatigue, I needed something simpler, straight to the point and honest. I wanted clear action points on what I needed to do next. And so that was my aim with this book.
I have covered the most important topics, such as diet, exercise, mental health, blood tests and results, thyroid symptoms, infertility, medication options, types of doctors, help with work life and more.
Throughout every step of writing "Be Your Own Thyroid Advocate", I have been reminded of just how crucial this book is to the wellbeing of thyroid patients around the globe.
From the Inside Flap
As well as a passionate thyroid patient advocate, Rachel is a pretty regular human being. She loves anything vintage and retro, experiencing new cultures and food, being on the beach, walking and exploring and is often consumed by wanderlust. Usually the 'mum' in her friendship groups, she's often found organising themed parties with no theme being too wacky, accompanied by mandatory costumes.
To keep up to date on thyroid news, information and Rachel's personal journey, please visit her website at TheInvisibleHypothyroidism.com, follow her on her social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or sign up to her newsletter, where you will find she's pored countless hours in to providing as much information for thyroid patients as possible.
"I want to inspire and reassure people. I want to give those who really need it, hope. I want to reach someone and have them think 'because of you, I didn't give up.' That's what drives me."

I was diagnosed 3.5 yrs ago and have dealt with nonsense from doctors, endocrinologists and even a functional doctor so having the author remind me about my power as a patient couldn't have come at a better time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good starting point
This book was really great at helping me understand more about my thyroid condition and where to start looking to treat it. Mostly though, it helped me validate my experiences and gave me hope. I didn't know how much I needed someone to help me see I'm not crazy or a difficult patient just because modern medicine doesn't understand how to help. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!
Recently diagnosed with an under active thyroid and had no support as such from my GP other than to take the medication. This book has been a wealth of knowledge and support and gave me lots of questions to ask the doctor (which can I add I now feel how I have more knowledge about the condition than the GP), I also super love the chapters which you can get your family and partners to read which gives them an insight to how you're feeling and explains the condition in English not jargon. This has made my household be very patient with me and support me whilst my levels stabilise
Do not hesitate to purchase this book, you will not regret it

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good book
Great book. Great seller. Fast dispatch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Information not easy to reference
The book explains thyroid issues well, and the science behind it, however, the lay out makes it difficult to reference and could be improved with tables, text in call-out boxes, bulleted text etc.
About 50% of the book is about the author's own experiences and trials with diagnosis and the disease...which is too much. A few anecdotal stories here and there would have been enough. I ended up skipping a lot of this book for this reason.
I was also hoping for more practical help with how to feel better - it's mostly vague references to things that may help but not much detailed guidance.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone with an underactive thyroid
A must for anyone with an underactive thyroid - this book went a long way to getting me well.
Many doctors do not know how to treat the underactive thyroid and this book helps you be your own advocate.
I was undermedicated for six months and this made me very ill because our local surgery in the main do not have a clue.
I was able to arm myself with the knowledge much of which is actually in the NHS guidelines which they seem completely oblivious to and I was able to argue my case to get onto a therapeutic dose and I am now well. I cannot say how profound leave grateful I am to the woman who wrote this book.
