1) Overall Quality - The overall quality of this machine seems quite good. It comes in a big box - the auger, impeller and drive mechanism are fully assembled with the assembly process being to attach the handlebars and chute (and route the control cable and light wiring). The overall fit and finish of this blower is quite good. It is made in China, but it's difficult to find an american built snowblower these days.
2) Assembly - I did not find this to be very difficult. If you're familiar with working on power equipment, it should go fairly easily. I have a fair amount of professional mechanical experience. The only challenge to assembly is the correct routing of the chute control cable.
3) Initial startup and use - The engine comes with oil in it. The engine manual states that you must check the oil level - mine was perfectly fine. I added fuel to the tank and hit the electric starter button. The engine fired up immediately in an off beat putter which settled immediately to a smooth idle as I turned the choke off. The choke is a red plastic knob that feels a little flimsy - I'd probably avoid using it with heavy gloves for fear of breaking it. I drove the machine around my driveway a few times and noticed that the transmission seemed to be slipping slightly. I noticed that the drive cable did not seem to be very tight so I adjusted the drive cable and went around my driveway again - no further slippage was noted.
4) Overall useability - I think this machine will do a great job for my small driveway. It is important to keep in mind that this machine has only a 24" swath. If you have a massive driveway, this machine isn't going to work. Also, if you live in an area of steep hills, the friction drive transmission will probably prove fragile if you try to take full swaths while climbing hills. Lastly, this machine does not have differential steering. You turn this machine by skidding one tire. It's a small machine, but it does take a little bit of brawn to move the thing around a tight corner.
5) Overall rating - I rate this machine as 5 stars because I really like it. I've yet to have a big snow, but I was able to clean up a few icy mounds on my driveway and this machine absolutely hurled the slushy mess 20-40 feet out of the way. I think it's well made with a few design limitations that I was aware of when I purchased it. I'll follow up with a comment in a few months on how this machine holds up.
Now, about the machine itself. setup wasn't too bad, i wasn't familiar with snow blowers, so it took me a few minutes to know what the heck they were referring to when they mentioned different cables that needed to be attached. But after i put it together, i put it to a test with some packed 2 foot high (and higher) piles of snow in front of my house. This snow had been melting a bit over the week since the blizzard, so it was packed and slushy. This baby churned through it like a champ. I had to go a bit slower, back it up, go again, in order for it to get through, but it made it through. I'm sure that when i get to use this on fresh powdery snow it will be even easier.
the only complaint i have is that it's hard to turn it. The wheels don't spin independently, so you kind of have to drag it around to turn it. Other than that though, i've extremely pleased with it.
P.S. for those that never heard of this, there's a website called camelcamelcamel dot com (yes, "camel" 3 times). COpy and paste the Amazon URL of the product you want, and it will show you the price over the last 6 months or so. Very handy.
Top reviews from other countries
I'll do maintenance over the summer and keep things from rusting and seizing but it ran like a champ and most importantly.....it STARTED quickly and easily EVERY TIME!
The 110 plug in starter wire is a dream come true.
My son has a similar one but he's so macho he insists on his pull start.
Having seen and worked on several recoils on these and chainsaws etc I know that often the parts can be plastic or nylon so why break you arm or wear out those plastic parts when you can start it wit the push of a button.
If I'm in a location where I can't use the 110 then, and ONLY then, I'll use the pull start.
Moves a lot of snow and it never bogged down here in Northern Ontario.
Highly recommended
UPDATE......ALMOST EXACTLY 1 YEAR LATER....JAN 23 2020
Last winter we had a good bit of snow and the blower NEVER failed to start and after a 5 minute warn-up....pretty necessary in my opinion, it worked like a charm.
Put fuel stabilizer in for the long summer rest but this year it started first shot and the other day it was -23 degrees and it started....took 2 tries but it started.
We have had one 13 inch snow this year and I have to confess the blower struggled a bit with all that snow....the motor slowed down and it wouldn't throw the snow very far....maybe 10-12 feet but once the first run was done I did a half cut from then on and it worked like a dream.
Keep it ice-free in the winter and lubed and painted in the summer and I can see it lasting 10 years.
UPDATE JAN 28, 2023
Blower still going strong with ALL the original parts and only some fairly easy adjustments to the cables to date.
Seems a tiny bit light on power for the deep snow...over 12 inches, but we've only had 2 or 3 so far and it copes pretty well, just need to take it slow.
All in all, a good investment and I expect it will last another 6 years.
Not as sturdy as expected.
Very easy to start, with electric start option. The throwing chute will also get stuck at times.
Shear pins are fragile but maybe it's supposed to be like that.
Easy to assemble, but not reflecting the directions.
I had to go to the hardware store and purchase new one.
The blowing power is good i have no complaints with that.
The starting i never even had to use the electric start on this thing. The blower would start first pull everytime.A bit crazy to be honest,Even in a minus 45C day here 2 pulls and it fired right up and ran great.
Was good on fuel also.
Now the big big problem with this machine was the transmission/drive gears, NO POWER at all. It would get stuck in 1 inch of snow and the wheels would just stop turning and not move at all.
Now we adjusted the cable and no matter what we would do it still had the same problem.
Ended up having a tech come down to our place to fix a tractor and we had him look at the blower and he also just could not get it to work properly. After talking to tech service they were no help and said shake the machine so it wouldnt get stuck.
Anyways for a good engine and blowing power this is great, for driving it well i would look elsewhere
