The star ratings for this product do not relate to the intended purpose of what this adapter does. The three star ratings are for Capacity, For gaming, and Easy to Install. The first two have nothing to do with what this product does so be cautious of looking simply as star ratings. There is no capacity because it's a drive adapter and does not come with a drive. Also, I don't see how this could be used specifically for gaming other than transporting saved game files or install files
This product is an M.2 Solid State Drive (SSD) ADAPTER. M.2 is a style of SSD that mounts directly to the motherboard of a computer. When not connected to a motherboard, you can't access the drive without an adapter such as this.
The underside of the top lid has a kind of thermal tape which presumably transfers heat to the aluminum lid and is dispersed. While the top of the lid has grooves which "look" somewhat like heat fins, they are too small to really do anything. I mention all of this because this product can get quite warm to the touch.
There are three screw options for different sized M.2 drives like the 42mm version. The adapter does come with a single screw for this type of mounting.
Whar this product does not come with and which you may need is a USB C (female) to USB (Male) adapter. The product comes with an 8 inch USB C male to male cable. Without the aforementioned adapter, you can't connect it to you PC unless you have a USB C port on your computer.
One thing you want to be careful of is not to try to open the adapter while the USB C cable is attached. When the cable is attached, it blocks the hinge from rotating and you could damage the cable or the female connector inside the adapter.
I would not use this as a portable drive as it gets too hot for my liking and there are far better options for this. The reason I bought it is that my M.2 drive that was my C drive on my PC became damaged and would not load windows. There were files on that drive that I wanted to retrieve so this adapter basically turned it into a large USB drive and I was able to get then without issue.
Hope that helps. This product did what it said and overall I am happy with its performance.
There are way to many VINE reviews for this product. Normally if product is really good it should have tons of USER ( Non Vine ) reviews... Vine users are sponsored to get reviews... Doesn't matter if they're unbias, they're not natural users who come to amazon to buy the specific product in question so their reviews / use are different than a regular user who comes to amazon looking for a specific to use...
This summary is primarily for those who will be copying large files ( 60GB to 500GB + ) from the Enclosure ( which are reads ) to any other device. The copies always abort prematurely in the middle of copying when enclosure is connected to USB-C port that supports USB 3.1 Gen 2..
If Enclosure is connected to regular USB-A port that supports USB 3.1 Gen 1, then copies ( read from enclosure ) works 90% of the time, meaning copies do not stop / abort in the middle...
I'll update refine and update this review later and make it more succinct later...
I spent a lot of money trying to get reads ( copies from the enclosure while it's connected to the USB-C port USB 3.1 Gen 2 ) to work... To eliminate and isolate issues, I purchased and tried following: two Samsung 970 EVO 1TB NVMe PCIe, M.2, one Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe PCIe, M.2, one Dell XPS 15 9570 32GB Mem, 1TB NVMe, PCIe, M.2 SSD )... I've tried three different NVMe, PCIe, M.2 enclosures and they all exhibit the exact same behavior:
Write / Copy large file from any source to enclosure with 970 EVO or 970 EVO plus installed while the Enclosure is connected to USB-C port USB 3.1 Gen 2 and writes / copy to enclosure " ALWAYS " works 100% of time no issues whatsoever...
However, then try to copy the exact same file that was written to enclosure with 970 EVO or 970 EVO Plus NVMe, PCIe, M.2 to any other drive ( internal or external ) and the copy will start but ALWAYS files to complete... ALWAYS fails to complete no matter device / memory / drive it's being written to...
Irony is the Samsung T5 1TB enclosure with 1TB inside it NEVER FAILS when copying from it...
Also there are no thermo issues as I have fan blowing directly on enclosures and it's cool to cold during whole duration of copy...
More details below. I will update this review later...
Anyway,
Nothing to complain about except fact that this enclosure as well as the others below " ALWAYS " fail during middle of copying when trying to copy large files from the enclosure ( which are READS from Enclosure ) to any of the following drives when the enclosure is connected to a USB-C port that is Gen 2 10Gbps and also Thunderbolt...
Windows 10 Pro, Dell XPS 15 9550 & 9570 both systems: 32GB Mem, 1TB SSD NMVe, PCIe, M.2
Plug Sabrent Enclosure with 970 EVO Plus in Enclosure to USB-C port...
WRITES to the Enclosure are very, very fast as expected and never, ever fail or stop prematurely during writes ( copies ) to the enclosure...
However, when trying to copy ( for purpose of backing up file ) the exact same file that was just written to the enclosure, copy from enclosure fails in middle of copying from the enclosure to Internal Drive in XPS 15 ( NVMe, PCIe, M.2 SSD 1TB PM951 ) and it also fails in middle of copying from enclosure when copying to any of the following USB devices:
USB 3.1 devices: Seagate 5TB Portable, Seagate 8TB HUB, WD 4TB Portable
NVMe PCIe M.2 Internal Samsung PM951 1TB
I've tried numerous times, trying to copy from enclosure while it was in the USB-C Port I've retrimmed the internal drive in the XPS 15s before copying from enclosure and writing to the internal drives PM951 NVMe PCIe M.2...
It ALWAYS FAILS TO COPY same large file that was just written to enclosure. File sizes between 80GB to 450GB...
Steadily copies ( 100GB to 500GB+ ) file from enclosure to internal drive in XPS 15 at 750MB/s then abruptly starts slowing down, then stops 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% of way ( completed ), but never successfully completes copying...
IT NEVER COMPLETES COPYING FROM USB-C PORT SAME EXACT FILE THAT WAS WRITTEN TO IT TO ANY DEVICE....
HOWEVER, IF ENCLOSURE IS CONNECTED TO USB-A PORT USB 3.1 it will successfully copy from the enclosure the same file 90% of the time to any drive internal or external at approximately 375MB/s...
This enclosure isn't the only one affected. I've tried following enclosures and they all exhibit the same behavior so I suspect there's something about the USB-C port that saturates and dies during middle of copying... I saw other reports and reviews on web concerning iMac and MacBook Pro's Copies FROM the enclosures only work when not in a USB-C port USB 3.1 Gen 2

The enclosure is well built with weight that doesn't feel cheap and speed was acceptable but didn't meet my expectation. Overall I am happy with the purchase.
This particular model accommodates both m.2 SSD and NVME technology drives, making this external drive enclosure more versatile and added value for the money. If you only have an m.2 ssd right now, you can easily re-use this enclosure later when you pickup a much faster NVME designed drive.
The top hinged case lid is made out of thick ribbed aluminium , the ribbed surface fins are for aiding in heat dissipation. Inside the lid is a length of thermal contact padding, that transfers the heat buildup from the nvme / ssd m.2 drive.
Prior to owning the Sabrent, I lost one ssd m.2 stick that burnt itself to failure & data loss by overheating using a different brand name ssd m.2 enclosure that used a slide-on casing and lacked any sort of thermal heat transfer. High heat will slowly kill and eventually cook chips and circuit boards. I won't mention the brand or specific unit (wasn't Sabrent), but I was not happy losing a costly m.2 drive with data on it. Hence my search for a better designed enclosure with thermal heat dissipation.
The Sabrent enclosure does get warm to the touch during heavy and/or prolonged usage but not hot enough to burn your skin. The ssd/nvme temps measured with Crystal Disk Info shows the internal chip temps getting to 50C at most (in my uses), and cools down very quickly to about 23C - the enclosure is luke warm to the touch once the drive is in idle. I don't have a temperature probe or reading gun to accurately verify the temperatures of the enclosure itself, but as I said, it doesn't get hot enough to burn you, and is cool to the touch when not in use. The simple fact that the enclosure does get warm and cools down quickly means the built in thermal heat transfer padding is doing it's job and keeping the drive inside within safe / normal operating temperatures. A drive that is kept within normal operating temps is a drive that won't prematurely die in failure from constant exposure to excessive heat buildup.
I like the tool-free design, starting with the inset push button spring mechanism that securely keeps the enclosure closed. Sabrent provides a pair of rubber mushroom topped style peg stoppers that fit into the slotted eyelets for the several sizes of nvme/m.2 drives, which keeps the drive solidly in place while also hassle-free to release and swap out drives if needed. No needing one of those tiny screwdrivers and painfully tiny m.2 screws. And the fact Sabrent provides 2, 1 for use, one as a spare just in case.
The one and only single nitpick I have with this particular enclosure model is the absurdly short 3-4" usb-c-to-c usb 3.2 10gb/s cables provided. I don't know if Sabrent chose this to keep costs down or focused solely on Laptop users. Even with that said, Laptop users probably wouldn't mind having a bit longer cable to work with, especially if desk space is cramped/limited or using the laptop seated literally on their laps, a longer cable would allow for the enclosure to be safely seated in the space between the keyboard and screen hinges instead of loosely dangling down towards the floor. Not everybody's laptop usb-c ports are seated close to the hinges either.
For those of use with Desktop PC's , the super short usb-c cable means its plugged into the port and the entire weight of the enclosure is pressing on the usb-c plug and port while the enclosure dangles. I don't like it when there's excess weight or pressures on the usb ports that ultimately leads to the ports getting worn out or damaged. For a few more dollars Sabrent could have at least provided a 8-12" length c-to-c cable and/or equal length a c-to-a cable and still maintain the usb 3.2 10gb/s rated speed transfers. Such cables to exist and are available on Amazon here to buy, by other manufacturers.
I ended up finding and purchasing a set each of longer 8-24" usb-c-to-c And usb-c-to-a rated usb 3.2 10gb/s cables from Amazon here, albiet they were a bit of a tricky find. There's tons of longer c-to-c and c-to-a phone/tablet charging cables that are only rated for usb 2.0 transfer speeds, and up to 10ft lengths; but you really have to dig through the specs and product description to find those particular extension cables with the 3.2 10gb/s transfer speed ratings. As I said, it's an annoyance and a nuisance having to search through Amazon for those specific extension cables, it wold have been really nice and good on Sabrent's part to either include longer cables with their enclosure product or at least offer longer cable lengths as parts accessories in their product store lineup.
:edit / clarification: Sabrent's store does offer a 8" Thunderbolt 3 USB-C-to-C cable with 40gb/s speed ratings, unclear if it'll work in regular non-thunderbolt usb-c ports... There's likely other people like me who don't have anything Thunderbolt 3 or newer and wouldn't have thought to look for said cables. And there's no USB-C-to-A cables for the usb 3.2 10gb/s speed ratings (or even 3.1 5gb/s speed ratings). Would have been nice if Sabrent offered a wider selection of usb-c cables in their store...
