The SD card inserts deeper into the Satechi and has a satisfying click / eject mechanism similar to the one that exists in many cameras. The card in the Sandisk reader just inserts and sticks out enough that it can be simply pulled out. I don't think that's really a problem with the Sandisk, it's just little features / luxuries like that reflect the effort and attention to detail that Satechi put into their card reader. The Satechi reader is about the same width, slightly longer due to the boxy shape, and 3/4th the thickness of the Sandisk. Satechi's cable is twice as long and more pliable despite it being the same diameter. It appears the Sandisk uses more rigid rubber which might speak for its durability, but it is difficult if not impossible to freely position due to it being stiff. The Satechi's soft touch rubber is similar to Apple designed cables, however it's thicker. Such design details fit well with Apple designed hardware; I purchased the white corded cable to go with my silver MBP. The blue LED is subtle, but it doesn't blink according to card activity.
The microSD and SD slots can be simultaneously read from and written to.
The Satechi reader's UHS-I read speeds of 91.5 MB/s are 3 MB/s faster than the fastest UHS-I reader I had prior (Anker's USB-C reader), but the write speed is exactly the same (81.2 MB/s). Whether using a UHS-II card or not the speed understandably drops to 50 MB/s write, and 65 MB/s read if the other card slot is being used at the same time; even if the other card being used is only UHS-I. I was not able to test two UHS-II cards as I do not have a microSD UHS-II card.
Both slots are recognized by the iPad Pro, but cannot be used simultaneously.
If two cards are already inserted into the reader before being plugged into the iPad, the iPad gives priority to the microSD card. Otherwise, it gives priority to whichever card was inserted first. -- Importing 66 uncompressed 24mp raw (DNGs) files to the iPad took 20 seconds using the Sony 300 MB/s UHS-II card, and about 1 minute using the fastest 100 MB/s UHS-I microSD cards (Samsung and Sandisk, the latter being a V30 card). So it corresponds to the almost 3 times faster UHS-II read interface appropriately.
I imagine there are faster card readers out there, as I was not able to hit the top speed of the Sony card that others were getting, but the 15 MB/s difference is negligible and I'm sure the other readers were using USB-A 3.1. So it does make me wonder if this reader is USB-C 3.0 instead of 3.1 or if the speed difference is merely a Mac versus PC thing. Regardless, there's no USB-C SD reader faster than the Satechi. There's another that uses the much faster thunderbolt interface, only to pointlessly achieve the same basic 95 MB/s read speeds (as its a UHS-I reader, according to its product description). I learned the long way that if a reader doesn't specifically say it is UHS-II or UHS-III, then it's UHS-I. They try to entice sales using faster interfaces but its pointless, because no matter the interface (2.0, 3.0, 3.1 or Thunderbolt) it will be limited to reality of UHS-I's 95 MB/s (104 MB/s theoretical limit).
Ultimately, if you care about aesthetics and also want substance, look no further than Satechi.
If you're in the field a lot and want something a little more rugged / don't care to have a microSD slot or slightly slower speeds, check out the Sandisk and my review there. I actually recommend both due to Sandisk's availability.
