With a cameo by Mindy Kaling, Regina Hall performs this captivating romantic comedy with a thrilling sci-fi twist!

Trinity Jordan leads a quiet, normal life: working from home for the Hive, a multifunctional government research center, and recovering from the incident that sent her into a tailspin. But the life she’s trying to rebuild is plagued by mishaps when Li Wei, her neighbor’s super sexy and super strange nephew, moves in and turns things upside down.

Li Wei’s behavior is downright odd—and the attraction building between them is even more so. When an emergency pulls his aunt away from the apartment complex, Trinity decides to keep an eye on him...and slowly discovers that nothing is what it seems. For one thing, Li Wei isn’t just the hot guy next door—he’s the hot A.I. next door. In fact, he’s so advanced that he blurs the line between man and machine. It’s up to Trinity to help him achieve his objective of learning to be human, but danger is mounting as they figure out whether he’s capable of the most illogical human behavior of all...falling in love.

The A.I. That Kept Me Interested
The A.I. Who Loved Me is a science fiction contemporary romance that uses the amnesia troupe to covertly further its plot. Trinity is likable and easy to root for, while Li Wei is completely endearing, and easy to fall for. My favorite character by far though is Penny. She has the sass of Siri, the willingness to help of Google, and the personality of Alexa. Sporting a happy and definitive ending, this story would have fallen under the PG-13 realm if it hadn’t been for the 1 ½ love scenes, and the moderate to heavy use of strong language throughout. Although the major love scene is easy to suss out and skip over, the cursing is peppered throughout, with it being the heaviest towards the end due to some highly tense action scenes. Not recommended for anyone under the age of 18.

I’ve had this book sitting in my (ever growing) TBR pile because I loved the cover and the title. Come on, when has there ever been a romance about AI? Plus the MC was a Black woman? Sign me up!!! After finally getting to it (in a pledge I’ve made to myself to at least make an ATTEMPT to reduce my TBR pile) - I LOVED IT!!!!

It’s not overly long, but man does it pack a punch! I did not see the book going in the direction it was and honestly, I hope it has a book 2 because there are so many things I want to get closure on. Looking at you Penny, Dr. Zhang and Yana. As well as the future of Hive.

What did I enjoy about this book? Saying EVERYTHING would be such a cop out, but I liked a great many things. The characters, the little Easter eggs, the immersive storytelling, the dialogue between all the characters. Even the non human ones. Sidenote, I shall now be kinder to my microwave and other appliances. You never know when the day might arrive when they have my back in an attack from the terminator. Lol.

I loved Trinity and LW 017- I’m sorry, I mean, Le Wei. The way they learned from each other - more so him learning from her - and the cutesy moments they had with him saying things that made my heart flutter. *insert girlish giggling* Him being a biosynthetic humanoid was so well done. I didn’t forget he was, but it also didn’t take me out of the story and make the relationship weird. I was rooting for their love and I too got the hots for the ‘Bicentennial Man’ (IYKYK).

Penny and Le Wei’s interactions made me guffawed because Penny was so sassy. She definitely have a spicy Siri. That entire Reddit interaction had me proper wheezing. Thank you, Alyssa. That was comedic timing done well. Not too over the top or even over done.

The relief and feelings frustrations Trinity felt when she learnt that she was indeed not losing her mind and spiders were indeed the cause of a the minor issues- I felt it right with her. I wanted to reach through and give her a hug. She should see a therapist. Maybe Penny, as Penny will help her out now. Lol.

Enjoyed this book, would read again.

I'm certain this is much better in the audio version because that was it's original state, but I don't have Audible so ebook will have to do. I enjoyed the romance but hadn't a clue where the story was going to go. Very exciting.

I really like the plot the characters and the twist. very short but the eventua back story does lend to the emotional and reality of the story line it, i don’t know I guess the only flaw was that it somehow still very…one tone? Like a bass drop with not enough build up? I would have liked more of a background on the characters, like there motivations, their dreams, their…general personality! Besides just a cut and dry description of the elements I supposed is one way to put it, but still overall it’s very sweet and simple and not a bad read.

I've read a lot of good stuff and sci-fi lately. But at this moment, fresh off of reading this? It has blown everything else out of my mind. It's such a surprising, smart, funny, well-written story! I stopped to look for more books by this author in anticipation of finishing this and not wanting to have the feeling of deprivation. Nothing else appears to be sci-fi, but if she writes this well, I'm sure the books will be phenomenal, sci-fi or not.

It needs to be a movie. ASAP. I wonder if there are already plans in the making, maybe before even the book release. I'm sure they knew they had a winner on their hands and it's an Audible exclusive, so Amazon probably has movie rights. I can't wait and I pray that happens. It's just the type of book that pleases you and then stuns you and then pleases you more, like waves that keep knocking you down. I was satisfied like 4 levels ago and it just kept getting higher and better and deeper. It's such a sneaky sleeper, that's all I can say, but you will be thrilled to have read it.

I planned to read ONE chapter. I have grad school homework to do. 3 hours later and I've finished the book! Addictive, amazing and I feel changed, the way you do when you leave a good movie that makes your own reality altered for a few hours outside of the theater! Bravo - and I REALLY hope this author switches to more sci-fi writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant sci-fi love story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2022
The book title and cover are quite revealing. It told me that the female character is most likely human and (based on the red light in his left iris) the male character is some kind of cyborg (that is, a being made up of a combination of organic and mechanical material), leading me to come to a conclusion about the kind of ideas and themes that would be explored in the story.

As I suspected, the main idea explored in is around what it is to be human. It reminded me of Blade Runner, in that respect, but what lies at the heart of this story is a romance - a beautifully written one.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story

This was a really great read, it packed a lot into the novella- thoughts of personhood, identity, memory, choice - all with a compelling story and heartfelt romance. I adored the friendship bonds too, and the small community that they had formed. The writing was as zippy and gripping as always and there were so many sentences that packed an emotional punch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but wished it was longer.

I found this a lot of fun, but I rather wish it had been a little longer and developed a bit better. I also feel like the ending was such a cliffhanger and didn't really resolve much? I don't know if Alyssa Cole plans on writing more (I'd eagerly read it if she did) but yeah. It was fun but I wanted more, to be honest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read

I bought this book because I love reading stories about Artificial Intelligence. I decided to pick this book up because I was hoping for a light, fun, and fast read, and it was. I liked reading this book but I don't think that I will reread it again and I didn't enjoy this book enough to recommend it. I would say that if you are a fan of Alyssa Cole or of A.I. romance books then this could be the book for you.

What I found interesting about this book is how Trinity is an unreliable narrator, and how that adds to the plot. You have the developing romance between Lei Web and Trinity and the underlying plot of the mystery behind the two characters past.

Overall, I did like this book enough to want to still want to read Alyssa Cole's other works.
