"Jen Mann talking me through the process of putting out STORIES I'D TELL IN BARS is the reason it sold more copies the first week than any of my traditionally published books. (And the only parts that went off the rails were the parts where I didn't heed her advice.)" - Jen Lancaster, New York Times bestselling author

Ever heard of someone making over six-figures from writing on the internet? Don't believe it can be true? Read the true story of Jen Mann, the New York Times bestselling author and award-winning blogger behind People I Want to Punch in the Throat.

Jen Mann went from a small blogger with only seventy readers to an overnight internet sensation when a viral post on her blog People I Want to Punch in the Throat was read over one million times in one day.

Read about how Jen took that one opportunity and turned it into the career she'd always dreamed of having. Through luck, hard work, a lot of f-bombs, and even a few mistakes Jen went on to grow her social media to over one million followers, sell over 200,000 books, give over one hundred speeches, and make over six-figures writing on the internet.

Learn about Jen's journey from snarky suburban mom toiling in her basement to partnerships with world-famous ad agencies who pick her brain, and well-known brands who want her help selling their products, to Hollywood who thinks she should be her own television show.

Jen brings her authentic and real tell-it-like-it-is style to this book. Jen is known for her dedication to helping other writers succeed and she will give you all her advice and tell you the real deal. She will show you exactly how she did it and how you can too!

She calls How I F*cking Did It half how-to, half inspiration, and half get-it-done. (Yeah, math is not her strong suit.)

I saw Jen talk at a local writers group earlier this week, and bought an autographed copy of her book from her. Read it almost non-stop and liked it so much that I bought it again (on Kindle) so I could not only re-read it on the phone when I've got down-time away from books, and so I could write this review. If you're a writer (or want to be one), or if you're interested in raising your game in Social Media, if you don't buy and read this book, you might as well just go cut your own throat - you'll be missing that much.

FWIW, I'd never even heard of Jan until I saw her speak, and I'm not typically a raving fan-boy ... but in this case, she won me over. I've been a professional writer since '72, and published my first (of 38) books in 1982. I've been a book promo specialist - hell, I even owned a literary agency for about a decade - yet I learned SO-O-O much from this book that I'll have to re-read it, with a highlighter, before I'll know for sure what I did learn.

Yes, it's really that good.

Now, for the rest of the story (which I shared with the writers group which hosted Jen earlier this week):

***

I'd like to give a shout-out to our speaker last Monday, Jen Mann. I bought her book, "How I F*cking Did It," a book about her writing life and her development as an author and as a social media guru. Then I read it, almost non-stop, and only wish it was a lot longer.

Jen's an impressive writer, but her story (which includes three agents she had to fire, a publisher that fired her, making the NYT Best Seller list with a self-published book, and so much more) is remarkable, instructive, insightful and filled with useful tips. OK, that's a long sentence, but live with it, folks.

This is a great book, which you should buy - and even better news - she'll be speaking at the Las Vegas Writers Conference in early April - so buy your tickets early (and save a bunch of money on "early bird discounts"). Then buy her book - and read it. And then read all her other books.

If you don't at least buy and read this one, you'll regret it. Maybe not now, and maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.

So what are you waiting for?

I know so many women who've told me they want to write a book. Jen's journey to being an author is not a template you can take for your own success, but it's brimming with great advice, lessons learned and inspiration to write for the right reasons... YOUR reasons. This is a quick easy read, totally worth it ifn you've been curious about how some of the brilliant authors you read get started and keep going.

Jen Mann's new book "How I F*cking Did It: From Moving Elves to Making Over Six-Figures on the Internet and You Can Too" is about as real as it gets. She doesn't sugar coat it and say that it's going to be easy. Instead, she gives out practical advice that can translate into success if you put your mind and a little elbow grease to it. Have something to say, but don't know where to turn? She's got the answers of what worked for her. There is no magic formula when trying to go viral or to actually make money writing. Content needs to be relevant, and the stars need to align.

The advice she gives includes reading comments (which in this digital world is typically a no go), putting your blinders on and staying in your lane, embracing negativity, and remembering why you are doing this. Ultimately, you need to love what you do, even when the haters are trying to drown your voice.

As a writer and blogger, this book hit home. I picked up tons of relevant info that will help me kick start my next steps. Kudos Jen! Well done!!

I don’t know how a person who goes from being a blogger with a few hundred followers to a comedy writing force with over a million social media followers can tell her story without making aspiring writers/bloggers not feel jealous or petty, but Jen Mann did so here. One of my biggest takes from this book is that audiences can be shared by multiple authors, and that writers should be encouraging others instead of viewing each other as the competition. This book is basically an entertaining how to for people looking to get their foot into the proverbial writing door. Jen Mann shares her success story and what she’s learned that does or does not work. It’s an eye opening look at just how much work goes into being a successful writer, and particularly, how much self-promoting and selling has to be done. In spite of the no nonsense, “Hey, this stuff ain’t easy” message, I’m inspired to get off my rear end and start writing my first book. If you’ve ever thought for even a minute that writing was for you, give this book a read.

I'm not even done with this book yet (13% to go!) and I just have to give Jen a shoutout. She's so amazingly transparent and helpful here. As a longtime blogger who started around the same time as Jen, I've watched her grow and succeed, while my blog and book have moved in fits and starts. In this book, Jen oh-so-generously deconstructs what she did and how.

Of course, this book is funny and cursey and inspirational. That's why I normally read Jen. But this info-bomb of a book has a lot more to offer as well.

This book answers the questions new/aspiring bloggers, writers, and authors might have about how to get more eyes on their work, earn money writing, and make a career doing the thing they love to do. Told in relatable language (yes, sometimes with colorful language, at that), with plenty of laughs and interesting stories, this would make a great gift for yourself or the writer in your life who you know will go places, once they have some solid advice in hand.

I have read everything Jen has written but this is definitely one of my favorites. With her usual dry humour and wit, this book is like reading advice from your best friend. If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at writing and you’re not sure where to start, this book offers honest, practical and very encouraging advice on how to do it.
