Out of the box you get the receiver USB and my headset came with roughly a 50% charge on it. So I plugged the USB in the back of my rig and in under a minute Windows recognized the device and installed driver. Upon powering up the headset Windows had already chosen this headset as the default for audio and recording. To be fair I didn't check my other programs to see if they had automatically switches the input and output, but for this review it's okay. Audio on the default driver was good, and I put it through a stress test of a wide variety of music. I wanted to see if it could do more and it could.
So... download the Corsair iCUE software. This gives you new drivers, an equalizer with a bunch of presets, control of the RGB, and a status of the headsets battery which is super important to me. Anyways, I changed the color and pattern of the light and quickly checked on the equalizer presets. To be honest 3 of the 5 weren't much different then the basic driver settings. However, the bass boost was underwhelming, the bass was hitting decently hard but at the sacrifice of all the high to mid ranges. The winning setting for me was the Clear Chat option. Voice chat was obviously very crisp and clear, and all other levels were adjusted to a great balance. This was my personal favorite, for others it could be different, but of course you can tweak the presets or make your own completely, but I wanted to move on to other things.
The build is definitely very solid, and doesn't feel like the cheap design of other gaming headsets I've had in the past. It's also a lot heavier then others I've used in the past, and this is due to a mostly metal design. I was hesitant putting it on because of the weight, and the fit seemed loose even after making adjustments. However, once on it fit perfectly, and I didn't suffer from any pain near my temples ( I wear glasses a lot and other headsets pinch them into the temples). The wight was soon forgotten and the noise blocking from outside sources was incredible.
The fact a great headset is this inexpensive is a definite plus to me. I've never gone wireless because of the heavy costs, but this headset is a great win. I've wanted to be free of cables for awhile so I finally pulled the trigger. I can now walk out of my office, go to the living room 10 ft away, or the kitchen to grab a drink 15ft away and still stay connected with a strong signal. So if my friends are chatting on Discord or in game I don't have to miss out on what's going on or ask for a recap. I haven't pushed the distance on this because I haven't needed to but again, for my use, it's working perfectly.
Oh, and I guess it's important to note that it is super comfortable to wear so far over an hour and no issues.
Initially, for the price, features, build quality, and audio quality this headset get a 5 of 5 stars from me. I will update this review based on long term performance and battery stress tests. Thanks for reading.
Let me start by saying that in terms of comfort, these are superb. The earcup design is perfect, it fits the ear exactly how it should, it has a very loose fit and they don't clamp at all. These are up there with the most comfortable headphones i've used. They don't get hot over long periods of time. Nothing to criticize here. They are a bit bulky (not heavy, but bulky). They must be, they have a battery in them, but the weight is very well balanced. Construction is superb, these will last for years to come.
In terms of sound, these have a VERY forward midrange and high bass, which is ideal for voices, they are not spacious by any means, they are closed backs with a very intimate signature. For music, I had to go with quite a drastic eq. Dropping the 250hz and below range (yes, lower the bass on these. It's very muffled and overdone), and upping the treble is ideal, doing this will eliminate the "boxy" sound you get out of the box (no pun intended) which again, is ideal for voice calls.
The sound quality when these are already equalized is very good. They are no monitors, but the 50mm drivers behave very, very well. The treble is excelent, it's smooth and not grainy. It's not fatiguing. High bass is very emphasized. Again, these are closed headphones with a very narrow soundstage, everything happens very close to your ears, but the experience is quite impressive for a wireless set. The kind of bass these produce reminds me a lot of Beyerdynamic DT770s (very famous monitor headphones), covering the whole high bass spectrum at any volume level. It's not as precise as the DTs, but the response is very similar. The DTs are more spacious too and overall a better headphone. It is a much more expensive set after all.
I'm posting my eq curve so people can enjoy these a bit more in music. This is what sounds good to me, it might not be what sounds good for you, but do tune them and mess around with the settings. My first thoughts when I got these were "well yeah, there's is the usual "tin can" sound signature. Guess I'll have to deal with it", but I was legitimately surprised how well these responded to eq. I prefer the treble on these over the Hyperx Cloud II's, to put it into perspective. The cloud II is a very well regarded headset which, in case you didn't know already, is basically an entry level audiophile headphone with some hyperx branding and a mic. These are that good, they sound very nice.
The microphone is what you would expect out of a any headset, nothing to talk about. Sounds clear, and you'll be heard. Great purchase overall. Ditch the RGB lightning and you'll get a lot more battery time. 5 stars from me. Go do some EQ now!
