Anna-tomically Great Spy Thriller
I'd give this more of a 3.5 stars but felt it was unfair to give 3 on Amazon because overall it's a good movie. Those who know the work of Luc Besson will most likely know what they are getting into with this one. I don't think at this point in his career we will get many masterpieces, however this film is still Besson at his most pure. The vision that he delivers with his stories is incredible, and there's no shortage of beautiful shots in this film. The trailer played for this all summer before every movie I saw, and I have to admit the pulse-pounding bass and action fight scene in the restaurant drew comparisons to the "Wickness" we see in a lot of movies right now, which is very attracting. Atomic Blonde is a better movie for example, than Anna ended up being, but it's still worth watching if you are interested. The action is very well-choreographed, and the film pops in 4K. Also, Helen Mirren turns in a fantastic performance as a KGB head who is guiding Anna through her career as an assassin. Pretty entertaining all on its own just to see Helen Mirren be so blatantly tough and dismissive of everyone in her field, she's such a top-notch actress. The issues I had are mentioned in a few of the other reviews, and I still bought the movie anyways. The time jumping is kind of jarring as the film begins, but makes sense in the beginning to sort of show where Anna is, where Anna came from, and where Anna's going. I didn't have much issue with this, until the first plot twist was delivered and we went back to where it all changed perspective and re-lived previous moments in the film. This makes the film seem like we go over the same bits twice, and draw the movie out unnecessarily. It really just sucks all of the tension and air out of the film each time it happens, and you sort of start over on the build up, which ultimately never leads to a satisfying payoff.I get what the filmmakers were going for, and for awhile it sticks together but by the time we get to the end, you kind of wish you'd just keep moving forward in time with the story. The going back and re-explaining what happened became very tiresome, and as a viewer it's kind of insulting after the 2nd or 3rd time. Trust in your audience and leave the clues in the film. I think had there been a brief shot back in time to recap the clues and push us back forward to the present with a new understanding would have been more effective. Most of it was easy to put together throughout, and just the confirmation "scene" at the end would have sufficed. But I'm not the filmmaker, and will trust that there was good reason for all of these decisions. Otherwise, Anna is a really well-crafted movie and again, just looks beautiful in 4K. Looking forward to seeing Sasha Luss in more stuff as I really think she's the glue that keeps this thing together. Always great to see Cillian Murphy in anything as well, playing off of Luke Evan's agent as an opposite version of what the profession can be. The special features are pretty sparse, but what's there basically confirms the reason a film fan watches this movie. It's for Luc Besson's artistry and pension for telling great female-led stories with awesome action and decently clever stories.
