Inhale, Exhale.: A Standalone Angsty Contemporary Romance (Hollow Ridge) Kindle Edition
What happens when your love isn't enough to save your marriage?
"I do."
Two words woven in love.
In sickness and in health.
For better or for worse.
Til death do us part.
And death dragged us apart.
We both said those vows.
But neither of us kept them.
This is not one of those happy stories.
Life isn't made of simple choices and happily ever afters.
It's a dark place.
It's not easy.
It's full of mistakes and lessons.
It hurts.
And in the end, those two words said in love, are the same ones said in hate.
"You want a divorce?"
"I do."
Each book in the Hollow Ridge series is a complete standalone.

About the author

C.L. Matthews is a USA TODAY Bestselling Author who lives in lala-landia with their husband and invisible friends. They're queer and Mexican-American, and love to write as many diverse characters as they can. They want to riot the lack of authentic Mexican food in their state but will settle for cooking their own dishes in the meantime. They enjoys tacos, Red Bull, and warm water, because they're crazy. They're an oddball and realize it’s been mentioned before, just go with it. Their joys in life consist of writing unconventional romances, making book covers, causing havoc to her reader’s hearts, and genre-hopping when they need a change of scenery. They're a special kind of weird and enjoy every moment of it.

If like me who didn’t go in blind with this book please do that’s all I’m asking. I don’t know whether to say make sure you have a box of tissues or a punching bag cause trust me this author wrote and killed this story all in one go. Me giving this 5 stars surpasses that, I felt everything and it’s way more than a deserving 5. This book is so not for the faint of heart but it’s a book that cut me open and I don’t know if it really redeemed in the end (for me).
So much of this book I’ve experienced and seeing it on words just determines how this author has captured every experience that I have at least felt. I wish I could give away more but then I don’t want to spoil it. If you want an angst read this is one I highly recommend.
So let me say this, I loved Jase and Lo together. I didn’t like Ellie from the beginning and I didn’t like grown up Toby either. This couple had soo many things against them it just wasn’t fair but in the end they fought for each other and for the truths to come out. That’s all I needed was all the truths to come out but CL doesn’t give you everything until the right time.
I loved that there were other POV scattered throughout, I’m amazed at how angsty this book was, especially at the end- I couldn’t sit still and I was swearing out loud. Can’t wait to see where you go next CL Matthews.

Book came on the promised time frame and I have since ordered another from amazon.fr. The book is a great read and this cover is perfect.

I read this book when it was first released, and then a second time shortly after that and each time I read it, I was wrecked even further. This is a story that will stay with you long after you finish, but I do think it is worth reading, regardless if you agree with the subject matter.
This novel flip flops between the timeline of when our heroine, Loren, was in high school to present day. Lo never thought she would fall in love after seeing what her own parents have gone through, and then she meets Jase. He completely sweeps her off her feet, and high school sweethearts turn into a love that most can only dream about. Though real life doesn't always end up with a happy ever after, does it?
In the present day, Lo gets a phone call that completely destroys her. Her mother has died, and she feels like a piece of herself has died with her. On top of that, she miscarries her baby in the same week, and falls into a pit of depression.. quite understandably so. I have never lost a parent, but I have lost a baby. You never get over that, and to add the death of her mother on top of that.. I can't even imagine. She tries to fight her way back to being the person she used to be, but once she finally gets there, it seems it's too late. Her husband barley looks at her, is having an affair, and her best friend (her husband's brother) is the only person that seems to see her, even though he has always wanted her for himself. When the truth about Jace's affair comes to light, will she be able to keep together what remains of her tattered heart? Or will she lose what is left of herself?
This book y'all. It is painful, raw, beautiful, and so honest. There were times where I couldn't continue, because I could *feel* all the pain that Lo was experiencing. It is overwhelming at times, but it really shows you just what goes on behind closed doors, and how death impacts even the strongest person.
As much as I hated Jase-- and believe me, his chapters with his mistress were very hard to read. Especially when he thought he was in love with her. But then we see how hard he fought to drag Lo out of the darkness and come back to him. Does that give him an excuse? Absolutely not. I absolutely hated that he cheated, and who he cheated on his wife was worse. It was really a struggle for both the readers and himself to see him be a cheater since he was becoming the one person he swore he would never be; his father. At the same time I felt his own pain, and it definitely takes a talented author to get you to see both sides of this of this relationship, and how it became what he did.
Outside of Jase and Loren, I really loved Toby. He was always the constant in Lo's life, and my heart just hurt for him. He stepped up where his own brother faltered, and even though he knew Lo would never love him the way he deserved, he was willing to take whatever love she could give him. Seeing him love her, and the kids she and Jase had broke my heart even more. I'm so glad he is getting is own book, because he deserves to find his own happy.
I also really loved the chapters that included Ace's POV (Lo and Jace's son.) For being so young, he stepped up and took care of his sister when his mother couldn't and when his father didn't care to. Seeing him confront Jase made me cheer out loud. The love he had for his mother, even when he had his own resentments towards her was amazing. In many ways Ace became the man his father should have been, and I so hope that his parents actions didn't ruin him.
Although the story does have a happy ending, there is a bit of a cliffhanger. And if it goes the way I'm thinking it will in the next book, I'm going to need all the wine and tissues.
This story isn't so much a romance as it is an honest depiction of the trials of marriage, death, and what love can overcome and forgive. This is not for the faint of heart, but it does deserve to be read. I was absolutely blown away, and I can't wait for Toby's book!

So many trigger warnings! Angst with a capital A!
That being said, the story is beautifully sad. I think the aspect I enjoyed the most was Loren’s emotional and mental health rollercoaster. The author was able to really have her readers feel the turmoil, feel the heartbreak, feel the pain that Loren went through. I also enjoyed her imperfections, her failings and that it wasn’t a simple fix for to get better.
I actually really liked Jason and even though he made a few (large!) mistakes, I’m emphasizing with his feeling of loss and not knowing how to help.
Toby- I wasn’t sold on him. Liked him in the beginning but had a hard time with his and Loren’s friendship.
Steam in the book was on the lower side but the scenes with steam were great!
Highly recommended to a reader with low triggers and feels like ripping their heart on purpose haha!
