Orange and Watercress Salad
Serves 2 adults and 1 baby
This recipe uses a dressing made with cider vinegar, which goes especially well with oranges. Chicory has a very distinctive, bitter flavor that your baby might enjoy trying. This salad is ideal for babies with a little dexterity, but even a baby who’s just beginning to feed herself will enjoy picking up the orange segments and will get a taste of the orange combined with the dressing.
The Salad
Peel the orange carefully, removing all the pith. Either cut the flesh into chunks or separate it into segments (if you can, remove the thin skin from each segment). Try to catch any orange juice that escapes, to add to the dressing.
Separate the chicory leaves and break the watercress into short pieces.
The Dressing
Thoroughly mix together the dressing ingredients, plus any collected orange juice, and put into a large bowl. Add the orange, chicory, and watercress and toss them in the dressing. Sprinkle with the chopped cilantro and serve. This salad goes well with cold chicken or pork. It needs no additional dressing.
Ingredients
- 1 orange
- 1 head baby chicory, washed and drained
- 2 ounces watercress
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (preferably extra virgin)
- 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

I like the recipes. The authors are British, and the recipes reflect a broad variety of tastes. Tonight we had "Fish Cakes" (pg 111) for dinner, which my husband declared to be surprisingly good for coming from a baby cookbook. My eight month old had a blast. I like that the recipes are written for "1 adult and 1 baby" or "2 adults and 1 baby" to be convenient for small families. I'm sure larger families could just double the recipes. The book is also pleasingly designed overall, but it would have been nice to have pictures of the food.
Just so you know, I'm not a baby led weaning die hard. My daughter eats jarred baby food at daycare, but we are trying baby led weaning at home for dinners and weekends. This book has helped me have more confidence about what and how I feed my daughter. I highly recommend it!
I bought several books about BLW, but this is my favorite. Simple, healthy recipes to make for baby, plus our toddler son likes them too! I'm happy to say that now, at 7 months, our little guy IS opening his mouth for solid foods. It's going to be a longer (and messier) process than with our first, but this cookbook has helped me with new ideas to try, and because our son is responding happily to the food I've made, mealtime is fun again!
The book goes into why it's good to let baby chomp on large pieces of food, and not cut them up into tiny pieces which frequently cause choking. So I let my baby chew on a whole dinner roll and she was in heaven, turning it around and around in her hands and taking tiny little bites out. This book has many great recipes like mac n cheese, sardines and tomatoes on toast, chickpea patties, and some desserts. There is a sugar free carrot cake that is sweetened with raisins, dates, coconut, and our little one LOVES it.
I love this book because none of these recipes are very complicated, none of them take hours to make, which makes them perfect for weeknight dinners. All the recipes are meant for 2 adults and 1 baby which is great because it's exactly our family. You can easily scale up the recipe if you have more kids. All the recipes I've made so far are easy to read and follow, and my little one loves watching me make her dinner, I can't wait to get her involved when she's just a little older.
