One note...Line 6 does somewhat force you to purchase one of the pedals because you need the pedal to update the amp. I purchased the Line 6 FBV Express MkII 4-button Foot Controller , and I'm very happy with it. I like the larger foot pedal switches on this 4-pedal switch, rather than the small buttons on the model up from that (a 6 button pedal board).
Finally, I chose this Spider IV over the Spider IV 120 amp version, in part, because this Spider has a larger speaker (a 12") and the other Spider IV 120 watt model has two 10" speakers. I feel that the larger speaker provides better lower tones.
I bought this to go along with my Epiphany Les Paul, and the sound that comes from this bad boy is fantastic. There are plenty presets that all have distinct sounds from Clean, Blues, Metal, and so on. All of them are customizable so you can fine tune them how you like.
There are some pretty cool effects such as echo, delay, and chorus, and adjusting the amount of each is as simple as turning a nob. I wouldn'y plan on adjusting these too much during a live show as you'd have to go down to the amp for changes, but Spider does make a foot pedal that helps with quickly changing settings if you're looking for some more advanced sounds.
I tested out many, many amps before I finally purchased this one, and I am so happy that I did. It's clean, loud, has a built in tuner, tap tempo, and more setting than you'll probably ever use. Do yourself a favor and get this amp. It's perfect whether you're processing in your room or playing in small stage spaces. You won't find a better amp unless you spend hundreds and hundreds more.
The good:
Sound quality is good to great, depending on your settings. The clean channel is good enough for me. Distortion is quite good, and the preset tones are very helpful for finding the exact tone you want. I use the Guns n Roses "Sweet Child of Mine" preset the most, and tweak it using the other effects.
Great utility. The foot switch is very helpful during live performances, as you can switch complete lineups of effects between verses. Between your premodern effects lineups and the very good wah/volume pedal, you can play almost anything.
No pedalboard required. While the built in effects may not be as good as what you'd find on a $1000+ pedalboard, unless you're a professional you won't hear the difference.
Excellent durability. Between practice and performance I have carried it around 4 days a week for almost a year. Other than a minor potentiometer issue (detailed below) it's held up spectacularly.
The bad:
I wish it had a compressor/sustain to soften the highs and bring up the lows. A Boss CS-3 will work well, and you can use the Spider IV's built in noise gate to remove hiss.
I use the 1/4" line out to run through the mains for many performances. I wish it had the option to play through the speaker while using the line out. Sometimes I mic the speaker and it sounds great.
The pedalboard can switch between four presets, but you can save many more. If you want to switch beyond your four, you have to reach back to the amp to switch over.
The ugly:
Once while playing I heard a guitar playing the wrong chords. I thought it was the other guitarist, but I had unintentionally turned on the looper. Having so many effects at your fingertips runs the risk of setting something you don't want.
One of the potentiometers is starting to go. During a performance the amp had a horrible buzz that I couldn't remove. I had to cycle the knob a few times to fix it.
Best for:
Someone looking for effects without wanting to build an expensive pedalboard
Medium sized performances (100-250 people)
Experimenting with sounds and effects
Cover songs
Not recommend for:
Someone who prefers the tone of a tube amp
Someone who has already built a pedalboard
Beginners who won't use the many effects
