Customers are mixed about the adjustability of the chair. Some mention it has just about every adjustment possible, with the exception of the seat back. The arm rests are adjustable, and it has more than one tilt adjustment. However, some say that the adjustable back rest is fixed and does not allow you to raise the seat. The seat adjustments are a little bit weird and not entirely intuitive, but with some time, the backrest angle adjustment works but if released does not provide much support. The chair does not have the adjustable height as shown in the manufactures video, and is missing a real lumbar adjustment solution.

Customers are mixed about the quality of the chair. Some mention it's reasonably well built, and solid. They also say the quality parts are decent and there is no industrial feel. However, others say the box arrived damaged and torn in a number of places. The fabric on the seat already ripped, and the chair broke a few months after using it.

Customers are mixed about the ease of assembly. Some mention the chair was pretty straight forward to assemble, with clear instructions. They say the wheels are tricky to put on and the screws are impossible to attach. However, other customers say the instructions are confusing and take an hour and a half to put together.

Customers are dissatisfied with the stability of the chair. They mention that the armrests wobble a little bit and the seat slides a bit. The lean forward adjust will move itself and you have to lean back and reset it. Some customers also report that the small parts were in plastic boxes that were not sealed. Overall, customers are not happy with the quality and stability of this product.

The tilt control takes some getting used to, but it is quite a nice feature for reclining and forcing an upright position (by tilting forward). Caution though, depending on the tension when you unlock the tilt for the first time, it might fling you forward (it's not bad, just need to learn how it responds).
The only gripe I have is that the central gas piston has a ratcheting drop when I sit in the chair, instead of a smooth adjustment to the weight. In other words, it goes *ffflump* and sinks about an inch when I sit down (it still holds the vertical height adjustment just fine). There's arguably too much motion there considering I'm about 152 lbs. Pretty certain all the parts are properly seated, and I tried WD-40, so this could be a flaw with the one I have or just the way the chair works. It is a pretty minor negative all things considered, but I would have preferred if it was a smoother adjustment.
Overall, a fantastic chair (one of the best I owned/used) with a great seat cushion and an excellent variety of adjustment options.
I work from home at least once per week as well as many hours dedicated to browsing the internet and gaming. So I needed a chair that had a high level of comfort for long periods of time. In this price range, it pretty much came down to a lot of store brand junkers as well as the Ikea Markus (which generally gets very favorable reviews across the board). I came upon the Proline II via PC Gamer's article from 02/05/2015 as their recommendation for budget chair. Bought it and overall am pleased. Overall build construction appears to be very good. So let's do some pros/cons:
Pros:
- Firm, dense seat cushion that still has plenty of give. I would not describe it as "plush", but the end result is that I still don't notice it after eight hours. That is a win when I consider comfort.
- Back mesh gives enough support and give. Good amount of lower and center-of-back support.
- Casters are silky smooth and move with ease.
- Plenty of adjustments available (seat front-to-back adjustment ,armrest height and width adjustment, seat angle adjustment, backrest angle adjustment, backrest tilt tension, and forward tilt). There aren't a ton of chairs at this pricepoint that give these adjustments.
Semi-Cons:
- For those needing a lot of lumbar support, I don't think this will fit the bill. I would have loved a bit more lumbar support, but I find that if I stay upright I get enough overall support.
- The tilt tension seems overly low. Even at it's "tightest" tension, the chair back will still move with very little movement. I would have liked a bit more resistance. But I have the backrest locked 90% of the time anyway, so this isn't a huge problem.
Cons:
- Arrived with a tear/puncture on the bottom of the cushion. There was no damage to the box when it arrived, so I'm not sure what hit it. I've submitted a request to Office Star to remedy this without returning the entire product. If I'm unable to get it repaired, I'm pretty sure it will spread after use.
- Arm rests are a fairly hard plastic. Comfort is still there, but be aware that these aren't super soft. Also, even after tightening the knobs to lock them in place, they still have some side-to-side movement. Again, not a dealbreaker, but it's notable.
Overall I am highly pleased with this chair and am happy I spent less than $200 to snag it. I feel it is priced well for it's amount of features.
As a side note, I certainly don't understand the reviewer who complained of hard-to-understand instructions. The assembly was very straight forward. The "Mechanism" they discuss is the only huge part in the entire box (the part that contains all of the adjustment levers). Yes, it's funny that the instructions do ambiguously describe it as "The Mechanism", but it's quite clear that is exactly what it is. I assembled it in less than 15 minutes without issue and I would assume most other buyers wouldn't have any issue assembling this chair. The only small quib is that yes, one of the six bolts that attach the mechanism to the chair is a bit tough to get at due to the levers. The supplied allen wrenches will reach it though and shouldn't take more than another minute to tighten down.
I'd happily edit this to a five star if I'm able to sort out the fabric tear.
Edit: Sent an email to the company with pictures of the tear and filled out a form requesting a new seat. Within a week of confirming the email, they had shipped me out a new seat, no charge. Boosting to five stars, excellent customer service.
1) It doesn't have a good spring tilt system. The back tilt is super loose and does not tighten. You find your back tilt position, then lock it with a side lever. Same for the base tilt. Base tilt does have a spring tension adjustment and supposedly has a quick release stick for leaning forward. I really don't know what it's all supposed to be good for. But I'm fine with it locked into a comfortable position. I don't actually want a chair that bounces back in forth. I really dislike sitting in a chair that immediately starts tilting back. So for me this limited function is perfectly fine. I just leave it locked.
2) The rest of the chair is pretty nice. Yes the arm rests rattle a bit. But they are comfortable under my elbows and adjust to a perfect height. I'm definitely a fan of the seat cushion and the mesh back seems to breath nicely in the warm weather. Adjustments are great once expectations are correct, see #1 above.
3) They've added a note to the assembly instructions about releasing the seat cushion depth setting to access the final screw hole, but it still might be confusing. Lay the cushion down on the seat side. Put the mechanism on top. Start setting screws. If you get to one that you can't reach, pull out the horizontal rod with a round handle and move the mechanism to expose the screw hole. Since you've already set some screws, this should be easy.
4) Another criticism is the use of 3 different fastener types. Completely unnecessary, but I'm sure makes things cheaper. Get yourself a 10mm socket and handle (not a ratchet, a handle). Then you can drive the screws much easier. The allen wrench provided is no good for the seat mechanism, but can be used for screws on the seat back. My #1 recommendation to the manufacturer if they want to improve the product is they should get rid of the allen wrench and fasteners. Provide a 10mm socket wrench. The seat back screws can have the same 10mm head as the mechanism screws.
5) I felt the assembly instructions were a little out of order. They tell you to mount the armrests with the seat still on the floor. Instead, just put the cushion + mechanism assembly onto the piston. Then mount the arms. You'll have to look underneath maybe to get the arm bolts and washers set in correctly (careful not to cross thread!), but it's still much easier than trying to attach the arms on the floor.
6) I similarly felt the seat back instructions were miss-ordered. Lay the seat back on the floor, back facing up. Connect the steel plate to the seat back with 4 screws (silly allen heads), then insert the other end of the plate into the back of the seat mechanism. Much easier to set the 4 seat back screws this way. There's only 1 big screw to then attach it to the mechanism.
Anyone can assemble this chair, but you do have to be willing to think it through yourself a little. The assembly instructions are imperfect. So is the packaging. I could probably pick at some other things. But at under $200, why? It's a pretty good chair.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros:
-The amount of adjustments you can make on this chair is equivalent to a chair at double the price.
-Seat cushion is comfy and seems like it will last
-Lumbar support given by the back is quite good and a mesh back so my back doesn't get sweaty (which has been a problem for me with past chairs) is always good.
-Great customer service. My chair arrived with one of the arms severely damaged and after contacting Cymax and providing pictures they sent me a new one free of charge (didn't even have to pay shipping) with no hassle.
Cons:
-Shipping is done in two stages to Canada. When it arrives at the first address Amazon tells you it's been delivered so I thought they had the address wrong for a while. My actual address did eventually show up as the shipping address a couple days after the first stage completed and relieved my worries however.
Cons: the arms are adjustable but are still too high (for my taste) even at the lowest setting, as I work at a desk full time and often feel like I will get pinched - I simply removed them (and can re-attach if needed later) ; the back - while adjustable - has fairly slack tension (I decided to lock the back in place and leave the seat pan as free floating so I can easily lean forward as needed and also rock a little when I want to keep from getting stiff).
Overall, I am quite pleased with the chair and consider it good value for the $340 CDN price. I would buy it again.
