For the tough jars, I placed it on top, make sure the rubber pieces on the jaws are aligned. Pressed the button for about 3 seconds and it starts. On the tough jars, it stopped half way so I pressed the button again and it opened the jar, then it retracts the jaws.
In the past I've had use pliers, butter knives and screw drivers to try and open these jars, but not anymore.
And it runs on 2 batteries!
One last note: Make sure the item you purchase is from Robo Twist and it says that on the tool itself.
1. The battery cover doesn't snap in or fit snugly enough to prevent it from possibly reaching a point where it goes flying off the opener when the opener pops a lid open.
2. Invariably, one or both of the outer jar gripping arms break or reach a point where they won't move, making the opener useless since it can no longer line up properly to open a jar with its inner lid grips.
3. Feels as if its primary parts are all made of plastic. If there is much metal to this thing, the whole product should be made of metal so it can hold up longer than it does. My wife and I have had about 3 or 4 of these units. The only reason I kept buying them was because I couldn't find anything any better, and often I could find one of these cheaper than other poor alternatives. Some company could make a killing if they would simply produce a product with enough parts made of sturdy metal and a battery door which snaps snugly into place like battery compartment doors used to snap into products. A flat latch that is supposed to grip into a tooth is insufficient. Any engineer who feels otherwise is an idiot who should have their degree taken away from them. You need very secure latching on a battery compartment door on a product which does what this thing does, because there is quite a pop when most jar lids are opened. I generally apply a small piece of duct tape to help hold the battery compartment door in place.
Suggestion: When buying this product, get 2 or 3 of them so you have a spare on hand when the one you've been using breaks on you. Or hope you can find something else which works and holds up better. If this was a really good product, I'd say so, but it's not. It gets the job done at first, but one never knows when it's going to go on them, and invariably, that's at the worst time.
Oh, and one last thing, the packaging is ridiculous. It's a product for people with trouble opening jars, and the packaging is about as elder friendly as an icy sidewalk. Don't try to slide it out of the box. Destroy the box right away to get into it. It's what you'll end up doing eventually.
It is pretty simple. Just put in the AA batteries and keep your fingers off the base of the device that has a gearage which turns the lid. Put the unopened jar on a flat space. Put the device on top of the jar lid. Then press the green button and keep your finger of the button. There will be a noise as the device latches onto the lid. Wait until it finishes. At a point, I learned when to release my finger from the green button and let the device do its work. I keep one hand on the jar while keeping my finger on the green button. Stand back a bit and wait for the BANG. The lid is totally off! Next, Enjoy your food! NOTE that this is not a device a child should use because of the automatic turning gearage when the button is pushed.
