**PRE-DELIVERY THOUGHTS AND INSIGHT ON MY PURCHASING DECISION**
This is the first time I've ever bought a gaming PC that I hadn't, in fact, built myself out of components sourced online. Besides our home PC my dad bought for us back in 1992, I've pretty much assembled every single computer I've owned since, and I've had quite a few. I was looking at building a gaming PC for YouTube Let's Plays and I priced out several, including some which would have had the Core i5 8600K, and this one still won flat out. It's hard to beat the specs and, like others have said, it's also hard to imagine how this company turns a profit. While it's not perfect in every way, and I haven't even had a chance to use it yet, I have to admit that at least on paper it's the best value for your money as of me writing this review, and before I even unbox this and use it I'm already planning on changing a few things that I know will irk me down the road.
From what I've read, the power supply isn't what it ought to be, thermal management leaves a lot to be desired, and the included keyboard and mouse are only great as backups. I'm going to be checking for thermal compound on the heatsinks as other reviewers have stated there's little or none. Also, the lack of a front fan drawing cool air is thought to be the primary cause for the graphics card running a little on the hot side. The motherboard isn't overclocker friendly, and neither is the RAM. But at the price and for what it is, it's hard to make a case for spending more to get mostly the same hardware, and the days where you could save a bundle overclocking mid-tier components are pretty much over. Overclocking in 2018 is all about getting every last frame per second out of your hardware, and it's hard to make a case if gaming performance is more than satisfactory and your budget requirements mean you have to consider what wear and tear will mean on your wallet.
That's about all I can think of for now. Next update will be after I get this machine and put it through a proper break-in period!
**UPDATE 3/20/18**
I just got the PC and it literally took me about 5 minutes to get it up and running and signed into Windows. It's REALLY fast, and unlike other reviewers, I didn't experience the boot device issue. It booted Windows right away. Also worth noting is that the wireless adapter is no longer some rigged USB dongle zip-tied to the inside of the case. It's a proper Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 and the board IO panel has two antenna ports for external antennas, which iBuyPower included in the baggie with the software and recovery disk. The graphics card is an MSI Aero blower type.
I'm really impressed with the build quality, at least everything that can be inspected without actually removing and re-seating the components. The case is top notch, and while I'm not a huge fan of the extravagent lighting, it definitely looks sexy. There is tempered glass on both sides, held with 4 thumbscrews each for quick access.
The included keyboard and mouse, upon actually seeing, feeling and touching them, are much better than I expected. The mouse especially seems like a pretty solid mouse, and it tracks very well on reflective surfaces. It has that new matte plastic look and feel which makes holding it and clicking it feel ergonomic, and the wheel has a decent resistance to it. The keyboard, although better than I anticipated, does leave a lot to be desired. The plastic case feels cheap, the keys have a long stroke and are spaced tightly together. The letter text on the keys looks like it might come off in a few weeks or months, and the keyboard itself does tend to slide around a smooth desk surface due to lack of weight and only 2 rubber grips under the palm rest. Instead of a backlit logo across the top I would have preferred no lighting and a more solid feel, but for a temporary keyboard or a backup until I can source a better one down the road its working just fine and I do intend to game with it.
**UPDATE 4/15/18**
It's been almost a month since I bought this PC and I couldn't be happier with it. It's silent, it runs every game I throw at it at max settings (1080P), and the onboard Intel AC WiFi is pretty damn good.
I took the water cooler block off to check for thermal paste application, and to add some if there wasn't any, and I found that there was enough already added on there. So I added a little more, removed the excess and bolted the block back on.
I had a 520GB SSD in an older Dell laptop that I added myself, and when I checked the stats I found that it was just as quick as the one in this computer (only bigger), so I backed up the laptop, added the drive to the computer, cloned it, and the PC booted up beautifully. Then I added the 250 GB to my Dell, restored the backup, and everything is perfect.
If you're still thinking about buying this PC, just buy it. You won't be disappointed, it's a very clean, fast and well built machine. I updated to 5 stars, because, why not? My skepticism has been completely eroded away after owning it. Only time will tell if this machine holds up, and knowing what's inside I think it will.
iBUYPOWER really did well with their packaging when shipping my PC. Everything arrived on the expected shipping date and it was packaged very well. The inside of the PC had blown up plastic inside it to keep all the parts from falling out during shipping which kept everything secure. Once I un-packaged the contents and followed the instructions, I was extremely amazed at how easy it was to have it up and running.
Here are the specs I got for my PC:
Video card/Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 8GB
Processor: Intel i7-8700K @3.7GHz (Hexcore)
Ram: 16GB DDR4 2400MHz
OS: Window 10 Home 64-bit
Motherboard: Z370-A Pro LGA1151
WiFi Adapter: Generic Realtek adapter
Storage: 240GB ADATA SU650 SSD (Boot drive)
Storage: 1TB Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD
Case: Slate Gaming Case (Dual Glass Side Panels)
USB Ports: 4 USB 3.0 (2 in front) 4 USB 2.0
Free iBUYPOWER mouse and Keyboard were included as well.
The case is really bold with the red strip down the front just like you see in the pictures. The glass panels are easily removable and have a semi-dark tint. The LED lights are very nice and a remote comes included to adjust various setting for it. It can also be turned off if that's not your thing.
On start up, the SSD really gives a fast boot, averaging less than 20s. I was pleasantly surprised to find no bloatware on any kind aside from the usual Windows 10 apps. The multi-tasking is a beast and doesn't slow down at all. All apps and programs open insanely fast. This thing doesn't know what the word "slow" means.
As far as gaming goes, I haven't truly tested it yet with any AAA games. I only have League of Legends downloaded at the moment and it runs super smooth at 4K resolution. I will edit this review once I get a graphic intensive game and see how well it does.
Overall, the PC is super quiet, has flawless performance and doesn't hiccup whatsoever. The only thing I can think of that would make this stand out as a true great for this price point is a built in media card reader (MicroSD or SD slots) and a CD or Blu-ray drive.
Pros:
- Super quiet
- Amazingly fast
- Free Keyboard and Mouse
- Great price for the amount of performance built in
- Mouse is nice and smooth with lighting on the side
Cons:
- No media card reader / CD or Blu-ray drive
- Not much room for upgrading
- Keyboard is lacking a bit and not backlit
Top reviews from other countries
Something to keep in mind is that some of the components like the motherboard are a custom thing with no manuals, bios updates, etc. Anywhere online. If you're someone who doesn't care about replacing components yourself or building your own PC that should be fine, but the first thing I did was replace the motherboard.
It's as advertised otherwise. The networking is a little slower than I'm used to so a wired connection should be sought. The gaming and productivity performance is fantastic and I'd happily buy this again!
Time tells many tales however, I'll update this review if ever I face problems with my particular rig.
I purchased this pc for gaming a while ago and in less than a year it broke down and I smelled smoke. I'm not new to computers and I know I didn't do anything wrong.
After switching around some parts with an older computer to see if it was just the power supply or something small and cheap to fix, I realized that it was a much bigger and more complicated problem and could cost up to $1000 to fix.
The pc was great while it worked but I believe I paid around 2k for it? And now it's been sitting there collecting dust because I just can't afford to fix it right now. Meanwhile my old gaming pc I've had for 14 years (older than my son) is still working fine and all I've upgraded was the graphics card twice over that time.
I would love to have a happy ending from the seller because this was a terrible experience.
Will update if things change.
The GPU is from the higher end (Asus STRIX) and the tempered glass RGB case seems very solid and is very pleasant to look at. The interior cable management is minimalistic and leaves a good view inside which is always appreciated.
The PC is mostly very silent (only sound comes from the water cooling fan) and never goes above what you hear when you start the machine. Everything is good on IBUYPOWER's part
Now the shipping company dropped the $2000 package in front of my doorstep without knocking nor asking for a signature. And that is simply unacceptable.
