1) People were complaining that this device doesn’t have a reverse button, but some how didn’t know that till they received it. Well read the entire description and look at the pics, you’d know right off hand this only has the 3 functions. Play, Stop, and Fast Forward. Solution! If you need to rewind there are 2 very simple methods, first being flip the tape over and hit fast forward then flip over again to play, second spend 5 cents on a number pencil and get to winding you whiners.
2) This product is cheaply made and the front door breaks off easily. Solution! Stop pretending that you’re a tiny pink hulk and must smash to get results. I’ve opened mine dozens of times and it still operates like new.
3) This doesn’t come with the 5V power supply. Solution! The internet isn’t a pop-up book you simpleton, read the description, all the information needed to make an intelligent decision is in the details. Literally it’s in the details section, that wasn’t just a snappy saying. If the product doesn’t have a very detailed description, then move on and find a different seller that lists more info.
4) Battery life is too short. Solution! Stop buying some cheap dollar store batteries. If you get a half dozen or more for $1, then chances are they are as cheap as you! Loosen your grip on your penny because Abe needs to breathe! Go to a major chain like Walmart and buy a decent pack of batteries, energizer and duralast are always good choices. I played over 20 cassette tapes, each with a runtime over an hour before I had to swap a pair of duralast batteries out.
Again I’ve had this cassette player for about a month now. In this time I have used it on dozens of audio cassette tapes. The door is still intact, my batteries last a long time, the 3 button feature with no reverse isn’t an issue, unless you just really need something to complain about. This device is a good quality cassette player and I’ve recommended it to several people looking for one.
The earbuds are a little too big for some people too, but then this whole thing is 15 bucks.
THE GOOD: This player is inexpensive and it is new, so you know what you are getting and you know how much you are paying for it. What I mean by this is that your other option for buying a portable cassette is most likely purchasing a used older Walkman from eBay (which I have done a few times). Going that route (used older Walkman from eBay) means you will pay a higher price and your used Walkman may or may not work when you get it, or it won't work for very long, just based on its age.
I'm a tape collector and I have been around the block many times trying to find acceptable devices to play my tapes on. My experience has been that the sound quality is just lacking on newer units. Players like this Jensen model seem to be built to *just play tapes* without much emphasis put on actual sound quality. Perhaps it is a novelty thing, or companies know cassette listening is a relatively small market now and determine it is not worth the added expense of building really good sounding players at a reasonable price point. I've tried a couple other brand new models available on Amazon, even those USB ones you may have found while browsing, and experienced similar results.
Ultimately, if you are just looking for something to listen to tapes on, something that works but doesn't really sound all that great, and you don't want to spend a lot of money, this player will probably work for you. Don't be surprised by the sound quality though - it is not great. If you are looking for something that sounds good (perhaps great) like your old Walkman sounded back in the days of predominantly cassette-based music, this player likely will not be what you are looking for. I would actually give this unit 2.5 out of 5 stars, but since Amazon does not allow half-stars, I rounded up, realizing that perhaps I value sound quality over function more than other people, and others may just want something that works - but just the basics. That being said, don't let 3 out of 5 stars fool you into thinking this unit sounds good.
I've attached a picture of the Jensen unit and my Sony Walkman that I used to compare the sound quality and all the various headphones I tried.
