In the world of Mouse Guard, mice struggle to live safely and prosper amongst harsh conditions and a host of predators. Thus the Mouse Guard was formed: more than just soldiers that fight off intruders, they are guides for common mice looking to journey without confrontation from one hidden village to another. The Guard patrol borders, find safeways and paths through dangerous territories and treacherous terrain, watch weather patterns, and keep the mouse territories free of predatory infestation. They do so with fearless dedication so that they might not just exist, but truly live. Saxon, Kenzie and Lieam, three such Guardsmice, are dispatched to find a missing merchant mouse that never arrived at his destination. Their search for the missing mouse reveals much more than they expect, as they stumble across a traitor in the Guard’s own ranks.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Here's a distinct comic book image: mice with capes and swords defending themselves against their predators as if they were the Knights of the Round Table. It's a gimmick, but one that Petersen plays completely straight. His art is a perfect mix of the realistic and the fantastic: the mice and other animals always look realistic no matter how adventurous the situations get, including facing snakes and crabs in the first two chapters. Petersen doesn't let things get overly cute, either. These mice are fierce, dedicated fighters, and the violence their job entails is not forgotten. While the book always looks good, the story is pretty thin. The action is never boring but in the beginning it never moves the plot forward. Soon a plot about a traitor in the guard kicks in, leading to some exciting moments covered too briefly, and the character development is thin as well. Luckily, the art makes up for the storytelling shortcomings—Petersen's character designs are enormously appealing, and the book is hard to put down for that reason. The story is suitable for all ages, and kids in particular should enjoy this adventure. (Apr.)

From Booklist

The Mouse Guard protects its fellow creatures and patrols the passageways used between the villages of the Mouse Territories. In this tale, three members of the guard investigate the disappearance of a traveling grain merchant. During their quest for the truth, the three uncover a plot to attack Lockhaven, the home of the guard; fight hungry snakes; escape a fiery death; and find a long-lost hero. Petersen has crafted an involving graphic-novel fantasy, populated with realistic-looking mice wearing colorful capes and wielding wicked weaponry. His lush colors and vivid settings give the story a majestic quality fit for a large canvas (or, perhaps, even a movie screen), and the characters are as bold as the brush strokes. The story line is, however, weaker than the art, which keeps the book from being truly great. Even so, this will probably circulate well among graphic-novel fans and may even attract readers who enjoy the Redwall books. King, Kevin

This, which is the first in a series of graphic novels by David Petersen is JUST what the doctor ordered if you are looking for something that's along the lines of Watership Down but more like a Dunsanian/Tolkienesque medaeval fantasy -- or were REALLY disappointed when you discovered "Hamster Revolution" wasn't about hamsters overthrowing a brutal rodent dictatorship in the Budapest 1956 / Cairo 2011 style...

The graphics are absolutely marvellous, and the detail behind this "12th Century" rodent society is surprisingly good. The writing's neither Vladimir Nabokov nor C S Lewis, but it's NOT a little kid's book. I feel the ideal audience for this is young adult and/or female ... my girlfriend (35+) whom I gave this to for Valentine's Day agreed with me that it was like "The Calico Critters' Furbanks Family Go Medaeval." -- and loved it, really enjoying the fact that the animals were both realistically drawn AND cute AND conveyed a positive message with a relatively engaging story line. (Her only complaint--some of the print was really small and she had to get her glasses to be able to best read it)

Spoiler Alert: The plot of these six short graphic stories is an interconnected series of stories that starts out as a Dark Ages "Whodunit" but morphs into a mini-epic about a would-be dictator attempting to overthrow/impose an authoritarian rule over all the shires. (The Black Cauldron meets The Two Towers?) As a Libertarian and Ron Paul Revolution sympathiser, very positive message indeed.

Overall, I'd give this 4.75 out of 5 stars, (the -1/4 due to the fact that this isn't Tolkien or Dunsany as far as the writing goes, sorry) and HIGHLY recommend it as a gift for older kids, and girls of most all ages, especially if they like cute little furry animals. (Will be buying Winter 1152, Black Axe and Legends for my beloved in the near future...)

Mouse Guard succeeds at a very difficult task; creating a convincing Fantasy world without utilizing any fictional creatures. David Peterson crafts a compelling world with Mice as the main protagonists, viewing the world through their eyes in a manner that one might perceive Middle Earth. Other animals fill roles that would be found in a fantasy world, all the while remaining true to their real-life nature (with exceptions, such as utilizing tools and whatnot, but that makes the story interesting). Peterson also excels in the art department, creating vibrant, colorful, and imaginative settings within mostly-real-world environments. Mouse Guard is kid-friendly, but very accessible to adults. It is deep, complex, yet fun and adventurous enough to be enjoyed by younger audiences. This is an adventure that can be enjoyed by most age-groups, although it is a bit violent, so it may not be the best for the really young. Personally, I'd say it is bottom-tier PG13, although that arises solely from the combat that takes place within. That being said, it would be unfortunate if you missed out on such a wonderful book. If you are at all hesitant, request it from your local library; before you know it, you will do as I did, and rush to the computer to order yourself a copy so you can enjoy it all over again. And this is only the first book; soon you will move on to the even-better (in my honest opinion) Mouse Guard: Winter 1152.

I was looking at these on the recommendation of my best friend, we had been playing a D&D game based on a similar premise. When I saw reviews mention it was good for kids, I decided to get them, as I have a 4-1/2 old, he is fairly mature for his age and anything with animals is always a good bet. They just came tonight, so I decided to introduce the first one (Fall 1152) for bedtime stories tonight. We read the entire thing in one sitting! He was really into it, though he finally fell asleep as we got into the epilogue. Myself, I enjoyed both the writing and the story (and of course, great art). The story and writing are simple enough for a young child to understand the highlights, without feeling the need to talk down to a younger audience, and still mature enough for older kids and adults to be intrigued by the story as well. I'm sure we'll get into the second book tomorrow night, and I think we're both eagerly awaiting. Great job, David Petersen, thanks!
