Do you feel awkward at networking events? Do you wonder what your date really thinks of you? Do you wish you could decode people? You need to learn the science of people.

As a human behavior hacker, Vanessa Van Edwards created a research lab to study the hidden forces that drive us. And she’s cracked the code. In
Captivate, she shares shortcuts, systems, and secrets for taking charge of your interactions at work, at home, and in any social situation. These aren’t the people skills you learned in school. This is the first comprehensive, science backed, real life manual on how to captivate anyone—and a completely new approach to building connections.

Just like knowing the formulas to use in a chemistry lab, or the right programming language to build an app,
Captivate provides simple ways to solve people problems. You’ll learn, for example…

·
How to work a room: Every party, networking event, and social situation has a predictable map. Discover the sweet spot for making the most connections.
·
How to read faces: It’s easier than you think to speed-read facial expressions and use them to predict people’s emotions.
·
How to talk to anyone: Every conversation can be memorable—once you learn how certain words generate the pleasure hormone dopamine in listeners.

When you understand the laws of human behavior, your influence, impact, and income will increase significantly. What’s more, you will improve your interpersonal intelligence, make a killer first impression, and build rapport quickly and authentically in any situation—negotiations, interviews, parties, and pitches. You’ll never interact the same way again.

I wish I could give this book 6 stars!!!!!
I loved every second of this book. Vanessa herself is brave, real, and relatable. Her book is insightful, fun, and FULL of so much useful information. Her "conversation sparkers" were my absolute favorite and something I ended up sharing in my book as well (with full credit and permission of course) because I loved them so much. Vanessa is so smart and is always brining fresh ideas to the table. I especially love how brave she is by tackling subjects that most of us fear (networking events, presentations, small talk) then giving us smart ways to work through them. A must read!

I was impressed with how well this book was presented. It offered so many helpful tips for improving your connection with people you already know and people you want to know, as well as what to do with people you don’t need in your life. There are excellent reviews at the end of chapters and there’s truly something for everyone. I’m going to read her the book now.

If you love psychology and learning about people this is the perfect book. I love psychology and study it for fun and this book was a great read and truly does teach you a good bit. I’m not really a big reader and sometimes struggle reading a bunch at once but with this book I was very entertained and read most of it in one sitting. I also recommend watching her podcasts on YouTube as well.

This is a letter I wrote to Ms. Edwards and I think it sums up about how I feel about this book. Many of us are compassionate about the people God brings into our lives, but we... As in in me... Go about it the wrong way in showing our Tru feelings. This book... In the little I have read... Has already helped me and I hope it helps you also. You are a beautiful person. To let this he seen we have to shine the light on others and in the process we see the greatness in ourselves through the reflect.

Letter:

hope this e-mail finds you well. I am really enjoying the book... Slow reader so just up to the decoding now. The book has really helped me out. I am fairly intellectual so I would always try to showcase myself. I thought I could make friend by showing my value. How wrong was l. I need to show them thier value. I love people, but I would come off arrogant. This eventually lead to me having no friends and a divorce after 20 years (sadly I didn't even see it coming).
However, now am an Uber driver and I can try out your techniques with my snack size friends (I love Fight Club) and it is amazing. I love hearing about peoples lives and we share a bond in the short time together.
I work hard at finding threads and asking why (I have not made it to 5 yet...sorry). It makes for an enjoyable ride for all and I have been asked to hang out afterwards and my tips have increased. But beyond that it has helped make ligit connections, something I always desired, but have done incorrectly (or I found a technique I could eliminate).
I look forward to many friends and a loving family.

Sincerely,
Matthew

PS- Thank you it was amazing. The more fucus I put on others the more they said I was wondering. I was gushing not knowing what to do. I had that time of attention in 15 years. And from people I just met. They said I just moved to the rank of number one Uber drive! (Which was odd because one of the friends was an Uber driver but I didn't want to split hairs).
PPS- Sadly, I didn't know how to take a compliment. All I could think to say was..."Aww... You would do the same to me."

I highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts with other human beings!

Vanessa Van Edwards does a wonderful job of being open and vulnerable in her efforts to show you researched-based findings that can help you succeed with people. As a fellow introvert, I often find it draining to be out in public, having to "play the networking game".

Van Edwards provides the reader with great, practical tips to help people like us navigate any public situation successfully. There is SO MUCH INFORMATION in this book that it can feel overwhelming at times, but the practical and proven approaches definitely add to my arsenal...er...repertoire.

Read this book and master your ability to captivate!

To some this may be "old news" or obvious advice, but for those who struggle with interpersonal relationshios and communication it is invaluable. Like I've often heard, "you don't know what you don't know" so this book is a great starting place to discover what you should know in order to connect with people and build relationships.

This book is a must read to understand people better, especially as it relates to the world, a business and networking. I highly recommend you read this book because it will help you as you try to discover the best way to approach different types of people in the workplace, and professional environments.

This is neither a content dense book nor is it an outstanding book. I am very skeptical when nearly every review is five stars, even though they say Verified Purchase. That isn't statistically possible with this book for objective people to come to that conclusion. I am only commenting because I buy books based on the reviews and these reviews are very out of line with this merits of this book.

Most chapters underdeliver. They have subtitles like "How to get along with anyone" or "How to crack someone's personality" but the actual content is very light. You aren't going to learn how to get along with everyone from this book.

This isn't a zero star book because the author does aggregate academic research done on the topics she discussed. I came across roughly a dozen new concepts or facts to think about which made the book worthwhile. The author is passionate about the subject and you will learn something with a careful read.

These aren't major issues but little things like mentioning TED talks throughout, name dropping Bill Maher and Aziz Ansari, living in Portland, calling the New York Times "a world-renowned news agency that we should learn from," and calling a guy who started the Citizens of the World Charter School a hero of education are circumstantial evidence of the author being more prone than usual to fluff and psychobabble. The author also has an immature writing style using words like awesome constantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering book for someone like me who sucks at small talk
Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2024
I'm a huge fan of Vanessa Van Edwards's work. I watch her YouTube videos and buy her books because she is relatable and knowledgeable about skills that I need help with. For instance, I suck at small talk at work events and want to improve. I learned a LOT from this book. I've only been to one event since reading it, and I used some of the strategies, and they worked! :) I felt very empowered afterward. That's an amazing feeling, considering I usually walk away from events wishing I could be like my more outgoing coworkers, who seem to converse with strangers or acquaintances easily. One-on-one, I do fine, but I tend to be the listener in group conversations.....until now! I highly recommend this book.
