Product Description
Luxi For All is a diffusion dome attachment for your mobile device's front-facing camera. When paired with the Luxi app for iOS, Luxi For All will help you determine the best settings for your DSLR or other camera, so you can take perfectly exposed pictures. It's just like one of those fancy old-school light meters, but way more affordable. And because it works with the gadget you already have in your pocket, it's way more convenient!
APPLICATIONS FOR IOS DEVICES:
- Luxi is the official app developed by Makers4Good for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Its feature set is appropriate for the great majority of users, and is the recommended starting point. Users with advanced and/or domain-specific needs may want to look at one of the other applications listed below.
- Pocket Light Meter is a third-party app which has many of the same features as our Luxi app, but also adds a few advanced features--such as footcandle readings--which might be useful to lighting designers, scientists, and the like.
- Cine Meter II, also developed by a third party, is the app you're looking for if you're a videographer or DP. It is designed specifically for cinematography, and has many very useful features for that usage: shutter-prioritization, neutral density settings, a waveform monitor...and now, color metering! (note: color metering feature requires iOS 8.0 or greater)
Your photos are your memories.
Your memories have never looked better.
Why do I need it?
The light meter built into cameras measures reflected light. A reflected light meter shows an appropriate setting for an average of the whole scene. If you are taking a picture of a scene that does has neither an average, nor internally consistent lighting situation, your camera's built-in light meter will not be accurate. Usually, that causes an overexposed or underexposed picture. Sunset portraits and other pictures with strong back-lighting are common situations, and can be aided by using an incident light meter like Luxi For All.
Will it work with my device?
Luxi For All builds upon the design of the original Luxi to bring convenient, inexpensive light metering to everybody who owns a mobile device. While the original Luxi was designed specifically for iPhone, Luxi For All will fit onto all of your iOS devices: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad...you name it. Even if your device is inside a case!
How accurate is it?
In our testing of Luxi For All and in our experience with the original Luxi attachment, we have found the readings provided by iPhone apps paired with our devices to be highly comparable to readings taken with those old-school purpose-built light meters. The following picture shows a Luxi For All side-by-side with a relatively low-end Minolta Auto Meter IV F handheld light meter under even lighting conditions.

That said, the device seems well enough made, and the app seems like it would be pretty straight forward when it works. When it does not, you have no clue what you're doing wrong - when in fact you're NOT doing anything wrong. My phone was incompatible! It does not have an incident light sensor for the front-facing camera so there was simply nothing for the app to do.
The way I discovered this was by downloading a different incident light meter app (Photo Friend Exposure & Meter) and trying that. After installation, it quickly reported that there was no incident light sensor found on my device. And this "test" could be done before even ordering the Luxi device. That would be one solution.
Luxi's customer support suggested in their reply, to cover the light sensor with your thumb (if it is not located close enough to the lens for their device to cover it) and see if the app responds then. This was not my problem, but it worked when I did it just to see. The app "thought" I had a Luxi device attached but still did nothing.
SO HERE'S MY SUGGESTION: Because they vary widely, if you're using an Android device install the Luxi app before you buy this, place your finger over your light sensor to trick the app into thinking you have the device, and see if it responds. If it does, I'm betting you will have no problem with the device and the app will work and be pretty straight forward. I would actually be curious to know if this helps anyone!
This is made of cheap plastic, a simple white plastic dome strapped in a clip. The light meter app that supposedly works with it is utterly broken, rendering this simple device pretty much useless out of box.
I tried a few other apps and found one with calibration settings; however, it's still pretty much useless for many phones because of how it works. When you clip it on and cover the front facing sensors, it has to be very precise. Even a small misplacement will sometimes render your calibration invalid. I experimented by putting it on 5 times, and the readings are very inconsistent when comparing the measures from my Sekonic L-208. The app performs much better without this adapter.
So basically, those native light meter app already work reasonably well; but when you put this on, it introduces a lot of variables making readings unreliable. Just stick to your smartphone app, and save yourself $30.
I previously used a professional meter with an initial cost $1800 which recently bit the dust . This works great for the intended use.
